Analysis of Chanel Coco Mademoiselle Commercial Perfumes have been popularly used by women throughout generations because each distinctive scent is almost like expressing the mood and feeling of the person who applies it. Amongst many brands of perfume out in the market, Chanel has been loved by many. In particular, Chanel Coco Mademoiselle is a women’s perfume in the Chanel collection that was introduced for the younger Chanel fans. Their advertising film with Keira Knightley gives clearer brand image to the customers by its unique way of presenting their product through the commercial film. It deserves a close insightful analysis for its ability to mesmerize the viewers without any words said. With a balance of ethos, pathos, and logos, the Chanel Coco Mademoiselle advertising film effectively appeals to women’s desire and emotion very well. Especially the film majorly appeals to pathos, to women’s longing for feel sexy, feminine, young and exciting only by its visual imagery. The Chanel Coco Mademoiselle commercial is presented in a way to appeals to ethos by the choice of the model, setting, and the soundtrack. I find it interesting that the director Joe Wright, who is a winner of BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts), and the representative model for the film, Keira Knightley have worked together before in his award-winning films Pride & Prejudice (2005) and Atonement (2007). Keira Knightley no doubt is a beautiful actress, but there is more to her than mere beauty; she is the kind of beauty that fashion industry desires. Her excellent skill in expressing the subtle, yet strong emotions through her eyes, and her ability to let the style stand out as it mingles with her beauty and fashion style is very desired by the fashion industry. Because of these unique characteristics of Keira Knightley, Joe Wright must have chosen her as the perfect model to represent the mysterious beauty of the Chanel Coco Mademoiselle. There is not a single scene in the film that the director did not intend, even the things that the audience might not take a notice at the first glance. According to a research on the commercial, the setting of the film is a famous fashion street in Paris, which presents a clear opinion of the director that the Chanel Coco Mademoiselle indeed is a top fashion brand; therefore, it deserves the spot light in the center of the fashion industry, Paris. The simple, yet grand architecture of Paris streets emits exotic European senses. The antique background seems to prove its generations of reputation by enhancing the mood and the quality of the film. Another factor of the film that is easily overlooked is the soundtrack. The soundtrack is “it’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World” by James Brown, performed by Grammy award winner Joss Stone. After giving more thoughts into the title and the performer, and the storyline of the film, there seems to be an irony: why in the world would the director choose a soundtrack called “it’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World” sang by a woman? Why not select the original sang by a man, a choice that seems to make more sense? A kin scrutiny of the film allowed me to realize the director’s clear intention through the contradiction. In the storyline, Keira Knightley puts on the perfume in the morning and seduces a photographer at her photo shoot, and leaves him all the sudden, leaving him in a daze. By choosing a soundtrack woman repeating “it’s a Man’s World”, it supports the message that emphasizes the opposite idea of the lyrics, which is “It is not men’s world”; with the Chanel Coco perfume, women have the power before the helpless men. Secondly, the underlying message of women taking a control of men in the film manages to appeal to logos as well. The storyline itself contains a clear argument that supports the logical structure. The film begins with the scene where Keira Knightley wakes up in the morning after sleeping in a luxurious bedroom. Before she goes anywhere, the first thing she does is to grab the Coco Chanel Mademoiselle perfume and looks at herself in front a mirror. The camera angle of that scene in particular zooms on her face, emphasizing her plain, yet determined facial expression as she carefully applies the perfume. Then the setting changes to the street in Paris as she jumps on her motorcycle to go to see the photographer. He stands by the balcony as if he has been waiting for her to arrive. They exchange looks as they continue on the photo shoot; then they are left alone by themselves, implying romantic scene to come. Interestingly, she hints at the guy to lock the door, and as the photographer’s attention shifts for a second, Keira Knightley quickly disappears, leaving the guy in a daze and awe. The storyline at first didn’t seem to make clear sense, however, there’s a reasoning that the director tries to speak through it. It is as if because Keira Knightley made sure she put the perfume on before going for modeling, she was able to seduce the man. It’s not just a perfume, but the Coco Chanel Mademoiselle perfume. The storyline attempts to prove a logical argument by presenting a chronological structure of the actress’s day-long event. It is to convey an underlying message that “if you use our product, you too will be able to experience something magical”. Thirdly, the effective appeals to logos and ethos bring the pathos more attention. Pathos plays the biggest role in the commercial mainly because the main purpose of commercial is to appeal to the viewer’s emotions and desire so that they want to purchase the product. The Chanel Coco Mademoiselle commercial mainly appeals to women’s desire to feel sexy, feminine, young and exciting. The film overall emits the sense of luxury, seductiveness, romantic vibes, mystery, teasing, and sexiness, yet simple, and the choice of neutral tone colors—beige, brown, and white—also plays a significant role by giving off “magical” tone. Keira Knightley’s bedroom in the film is consisting of white, beige and gold, which are the colors that blend together naturally. The background, the street in Paris also is beige, brown and neutral tone; even her fitting outfit is completely skin tone. I noticed the camera angle scanning Knightley from the bottom when she got on her motorcycle, emphasizing her feminine body shape. Basically, the color tone of the film is all neural tone colors throughout the entire 3minutes and 20seconds. The director’s intention for the choice of color seems clear that the choice of nude tone reminds skin and flesh, therefore arousing the sense of feminine and sexiness of the actress. It is quite interesting that there is no single scene with a vivid color; that way, the viewers’ attention is not distributed but they are able to engage in the storyline as Knightley does her job. Each scene and the movement of the actress are intended to appeal to emotion as well. It is easily noticeable that Keira Knightley keeps making an eye contact with the photographer. Eye contact often implies interest and attention, also is a sign that she is trying to seduce the man. Like the soundtrack introduced above, she seems to know how to manage guy’s mind, of course part of the credit goes to the perfume she put on. The film’s open-ended ending is also something to think through; why wouldn’t they end up together nor have a clearer ending? It is to leave a sense of a lingering imagery that enhances the mysterious and mesmerizing feeling to the viewers, and also implies that the ending is up to them. By leaving the ending to the audience, it ignites their curiosity and interest, with a sense of satisfaction about the quality of the commercial film. Unlike other advertisements, the Chanel Coco Mademoiselle produces a commercial of the finest quality that seems to prove their high reputation in the fashion industry. In conclusion, the Chanel Coco Mademoiselle commercial film touches on all three of the rhetorical appeals: ethos, logos, and pathos. With the director’s skilled understanding of women’s desire and emotion, he puts the most emphasis on pathos. Overall, the commercial film effectively appeals to women’s natural desire to feel beautiful, mysterious, and seductive with the use of appropriate mixture of ethos, logos, and pathos, and proves the point that the effective visual images alone can appeal to the viewers without words spoken.

Analytical Essay - My Son the Fanatic

...Analytical Essay – My Son The Fanatic For many people it can be hard to break out of the social inheritance, which we all have. It takes time, effort and often, a lot of money. This is just one of the many things, that is happening on in the short story “My Son The Fanatic”. My Son The Fanatic is about Ali and his father Parvez. It takes us threw Ali´s life and how his father Parvez, has a big impact on Ali´s life it. It also shows us the ups and downs in the little families’ lives. The main focus in my analysis is going to be the relationship between Ali and his father, and also on how the relationship develops, how the father helps his son. I also want to look at, the impact that Ali has in his father’s life. If he changed him in any way, maybe Parvez is just living his own life, without any influence from his son, Ali. I will also tell a bit about the environment in the short story. The short story My Son The Fanatic is a about a boy Ali, whom goes to college. He is very religious, a Muslim. He is independent and sees Parvez' beloved Britain as a fraudulent cocktail of "a sink of hypocrites, drug takers and prostitutes.” He seems to bear no resemblance to his father and be very resentful towards his way of sees life. His father Parvez is the caring, protective husband, whose dream is Britain itself; to have his son grow up, educating as an accountant, shine at cricket and school and then set off to marry a good girl and commence his own life. Thank You Ma'Am - Analytical Essay

...Analytical essay of Thank You M’am The short story “Thank You M’am” is written by the famous black writer Langston Hughes. This fictional text is about the teenager Roger, who tries to steal the purse of the large woman Mrs. Luella Bates Washington, who instead of reporting the boy to the police or run frightened away chooses to learn him an alternative lesson, by taking him to her house and wash his face. There is no place in the text that tells where the story takes place, but it is most likely that the location is somewhere in the United States, as Langston Hughes is American. The action in the story is in the street, where the boy and the woman meet, and in the woman’s house. The time of the story is probably around the 1950’s, as it is within the living period of Langston Hughes, but also the character Mrs. Washington works in a beauty shop (p. 3, l. 41), which was not a very common thing before the 50’s. There is no indications in the text that tell anything specific about the social environment, but as the boy, Roger tries to steal from Mrs. Washington, he is in all probability poor, and Mrs. Washington is probably from the middle class, as she has a house. In the story we meet two persons: The teenager boy, Roger and the woman, Mrs. Luella Bates Washington. Roger is around fourteen or fifteen years old, wearing blue jeans and tennis shoes, and he was also looking frail (p. 1, ll. 35-36). It is possible that he does not have any one to take care of him, but it is also...

...Analytical Essay of Maurice Pervin “He seemed to know the presence of objects before he touched them. It was a pleasure to him to rock thus through a world of things, carried on the flood in a sort of blood prescience. He did not think much or trouble much. So long as he kept this sheer immediacy of blood-contact with the substantial world he was happy, he wanted no intervention of visual consciousness.” (pg.8) Had the character Maurice Pervin not been blinded, perhaps stricken with another form of handicap such as deafness, this blood prescience would not have been captured as effectively as is the case of him not having sight. Without being ‘bothered by a great many things’ that the ability of sight allows a human being, Maurice was able to tap into a greater sense of awareness to the things he encountered. He has been granted a new awareness of how to perceive his atmosphere, finding serenity and tranquility of immediate contact in darkness. His blindness is in fact his greatest strength never a weakness, almost supernatural as if to be compared to Superman who possesses superhuman strength. In addition to other attributes that make up Maurice Pervin such as being over-sensitive, passionate, and having feelings that are quick and acute, blindness fits perfectly within this character’s make up. As if to see things for what they truly are on an emotional level was a gift that he already possessed only heightened by his inability to now see with his eyes. D.H. Lawrence builds...

...Trips to the wild are experiences that fathers and sons have always shared. In the wild they will not only get closer to nature; they will get closer to each other. Furthermore, these trips are a possibility for fathers to pass knowledge to their sons. In Mark Slouka’s short story “Crossing” from 2009 a father takes his son on such a trip. But nature is not an opponent that should be underestimated, and the family gets to experience just how brutal nature can really be, when you do not watch your every step. The main character in the short story is a father. The reader has access to his thoughts and emotions and through these he is portrayed. It is obvious to the reader that the father cares a lot for his son, which makes him seem sympathetic. Wanting to build up a relationship with his son, the father brings him on a camping trip in the wild exactly like the ones he used to go on with his own father. He wants to pass on the tradition he used to share with his father to his son. It is made clear that the father is in a difficult place right now. He is stuck between two phases in his life. It is described that he hadn’t been happy in a while (l.5), which indicates that he has been going through a rough patch and maybe even suffered from a depression. This could be due to his recent divorce from the son’s mother. Furthermore, it is suggested that the breakup is his fault. Maybe he could make this right, (l.20) he thinks when he looks at his ex-wife. The son, too, seems sympathetic...

...Judy Champion Mrs. Patty ENG 252 17 April 2014 The Struggle for Equal Rights Throughout history women have fought against the stigma of being considered fragile creatures incapable of rational thought and in need of male guidance and protection. Women continually fight for common rights not controlled by gender guidelines. In fact, groundbreaking progress has been made over the past one hundred years. It is not always a winning battle but women continue to witness the growing acceptance within many of the previously male dominated professions, such as author, poet, and journalist. One noted writer, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, in her short story “The Yellow Wall-paper”, told of the insensitive treatment of women’s mental health by medical professionals during the 1800’s. Some of the most notable examples of inequality are vividly evident in the basic rights and privileges we enjoy in the 21st century. Rights that were denied women in the US in the 1800s such as the right to vote, the right to retain ownership of her property upon marriage, and competent medical treatment. Women’s right to vote was a long, difficult battle. Early leaders of women’s rights like Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony began their work as abolitionist with the intention of stopping slavery and obtaining basic rights for the Negros. Likewise, they began to realize how few rights women actually had and decided to take on the challenge to change things; “This growing understanding of...

...Imaginative writing is an art that expresses ideas and thoughts in an imaginative way. This art involves universal laws of human nature, and both time and place. Without connecting the reader through these principles, the author’s work is somewhat meaningless. In order for the author to gain something through his/her work, the author must be able to manipulate the perceptions of the reader. This can be done by successfully incorporating the five elements of craft found in literature. These elements function to focus the reader towards a specific end, and the five elements include: image, voice, character, setting and story. It is imperative that the author utilizes these elements to create a piece that stimulates emotions in the reader. Albert Goldbarth does a great job of effectively using each of the five elements of craft in his poem, “Columbine High School/Littleton, CO.” The poem is only 23 lines long, but after comprehensively analyzing the piece, the analyzer can see that Goldbarth intricately and effectively weaves together the elements of craft and delivers a story with several different layers of a deeper underlying meaning that what appears at first glance. Throughout the poem, there are separate images that appear to the reader. The first actual images revealed in this poem are the 15 crosses that represent the deaths of the high school students. Instantly the image of the crosses shifts to the photograph. In the picture is a woman, perhaps a mother of one of the...

..."Just Walk on By” In Brent Staples essay, “Just Walk on By”, he explains how during his lifetime, different people was judging him because he was a tall, African American who pursued his career as a journalist in a substantially Caucasian environment. In his essay, Staples applies a written description to demonstrate the different times where individuals begin to react in another way when they identified him because of his color. For example, as he was rushing to hand in an article for a magazine, he was being accused of being a robber. From reading that statement, it is understandable that Staples was being criticized wrongly. Also, Staples applies cause and effect to demonstrate how he acts in another way, optimistically so individuals can see him as a different person. He compares and contrasts how a few circumstances would change if he were another color. Staples covers various examples all through the essay “Just Walk on By” where he was wrongly treated on behalf of his color. For example, he applies is when he realize individuals began to act another way towards him. “I was a 22 years old, a graduate student newly arrived at the University of Chicago. It was in the echo of a terrified woman’s footfalls that I first began to know that unwieldy inheritance I’d come into – the ability to alter public space in ugly ways. Abortion Analytical Essay

...Abortions: Morally Acceptable or Not? The issue of abortion is one of the most sensitive and controversial issues faced by modern societies. This issue leads to topics of whether abortion is right or wrong, if it is the actual killing of a person, and what actually defines the moral status of a fetus. In this paper, I will be arguing against Bonnie Steinbock, who believes that abortions are morally acceptable. So I will be supporting the view that abortions are not morally acceptable. In Bonnie Steinbock’s essay, “Why Abortions Are Not Wrong,” she argues that abortions are morally acceptable because fetuses are non-sentient beings and therefore lack interests as well as moral status. Her first premise suggests that it is wrong to kill an organism with moral status, so she believes that a fetus is not morally equivalent to a newborn baby because a first trimester fetus cannot think, feel, or perceive anything like a newborn baby is able to. Steinbock states that a fetus “is certainly alive and human but it feels and is aware of nothing.” She also believes in the interest view which limits the moral status to beings who have interests and restricts the possession of interests to conscious and sentient beings. Which leads to her next premise that being sentient and having interests is essential for having moral status. Steinbock states that, “sentience is the ability to experience pain and pleasure.” The difference between sentient and non-sentient beings, is that since non-sentient...

Hermie - Analytical Essay

...Hermie is a short story about child- and adulthood, unconditional love, and friendship. In the story we are met by memories from a marine biologist’s childhood, and his fight to rid himself of a tender memory of losing a close friend. The short novel promotes that one should not get so intellectual that one loses contact with the real. In Hermie, the main character is a male whose name we do not know. He is a marine biologist, working at a university. He is situated at the Eighteenth International Conference of Limnology and Oceanology in Salzburg. The main character seems to be a nervously inclined man – something we get the impression of in the beginning where he says that “the introduction to Marine Biology I give to my freshmen every year is enough to rattle me,” and when he reveals that he repeats a mantra before doing such speeches: “Calm Blue Ocean.” He also appears to be of some importance, since he is invited to such an event, and since he is to give a speech. Even though the main character is a grown man, he appears to still have an imaginative mind. This is presented to the reader when he goes to the bathroom before his speech, to rid himself of his nervousness. Here he meets a talking hermit crab called Hermie that apparently was the main character’s imaginary friend when he was a child. He speaks with Hermie until there are only minutes left before his speech, and flushes him down the toilet before leaving the bathroom. He speaks with Hermie about all their summer...

Analytical Essay : Taxes

...6/30/10 The Issue of Taxes The viewpoint on taxes within American society stands to be both a controversial and bittersweet benefit among citizens of the nation. Although taxes help society sustain its stability in all aspects of finances in our economy as a whole; its inaccuracies often leave society members baffled. Paired with the concerns of the system of taxation are key virtues of the system as a whole. The confusion with the issue of income tax was acknowledged by Albert Einstein, a German born physicist, when he expressed that, “The hardest thing in the world to understand is the income tax”. Income tax serves to be a prominent piece of controversy and the primary source of why citizens question whether it’s effective and if there are any alternatives to supplement the process. Like all systems in our nation today, there reside both advantages and disadvantages in the way they are both perceived and carried out. Our national system of taxation secures our basic values and financial stability. For instance, our tax system helps the government as well as protecting the low-class individuals from high taxes. It even tries to have an effective way as they say “distributing the wealth”. Our nations system also helps to protect citizens during time of recession, allowing them to fall into the lower income bracket if their income happens to drop. It also enables a steady income within our government when times of depression become apparent. However, it comes inevitable...
