...Ethical Issues in Three Economies: China, Jamaica, and the U.S.A. Ethical issues arise in many different forms across very different cultural, economic and even geographic situations. In a paper written by Lillian Fok, et al, the question is raised whether participants in three significantly varied economies will tend to have similar responses to ethical questions encountered during typical business scenarios. Business professionals from China, Jamaica, and the United States were presented with situations and ethically questionable decisions (and in some cases, illegal). The subjects were then asked how likely they would have been to make the same choices and their probable justifications. The researchers found both similarities and distinct differences that they concluded can be attributed to cultural and environmental variations between the respondents’ countries of origin. Five different scenarios were presented to the participants to gauge their ethical positions under certain circumstances. In only one of the five was there any statistically significant difference in the respondents’ propensity to agree with the ethically questionable position. The scenario concerned a willingness to pursue a profitable venture that would knowingly result in increased pollution. The Chinese and American participants were less willing to engage in the polluting behavior than the Jamaicans. The researchers posit that Jamaica is more apt to tolerate violations of pollution regulations...

...Define and describe the interactional framework for analyzing leadership including the different components of the framework and how it can be used to determine effective leadership. The interactional framework for analyzing leadership depicts leadership as a function of three elements (level of analysis): the leader, the followers, and the situation. It can be used to analyze leadership scenarios from each level of analysis separately, which can be useful. However, using the framework as an analysis tool for leadership situations is more effective when analyzing the interactions between the different levels of analysis. For instance, it may be useful to examine a leadership scenario by analyzing the situation and determining the level of stress, the environment, or the task at hand but more information can be gathered by analyzing the interaction between the leader and the situation. If the leader can perform actions to modify the situation, to lessen the stress of the situation for example, there may be a resulting positive effect on the followers. This example highlights one of the unique and useful aspects of the interactional framework for analyzing leadership: the importance placed on the interactions between the leader, the followers, and the situation. The interactional framework for analyzing leadership scenarios is best represented by a Venn diagram, as drawn below, where each level of analysis (leader, followers, and situation) are drawn as open circles that overlap...

...Ethical Theories Matthew James Ditolla ETH/316 October 12, 2015 Kevin Barker Ethical Theories How does an individual determine what is right, wrong, ethical, or unethical? Throughout history, people have created various theories to help others answer that question. Virtue theory, utilitarianism, and deontology are examples of ethical concepts. Through personal experiences, and an in-depth look and comparison of the various ethical theories, one gains a greater understanding of them all. Virtue Theory Virtue theory is an approach to ethics that emphasizes an individual's character as the prominent element in making ethical decisions. Dissimilar to the other two types of ethics, virtue ethics focuses on what kind of people we should be. Virtue theorists believe that everyone is born with their set of character traits and that each of us should foster those traits as we grow older. For example, a student in one of my previous cohorts plagiarized a large portion of his assignment and was caught. I knew the student very well, and as a result, I was able to judge the students character when deciding whether or not he intentionally plagiarized. This student usually produced excellent work, and perhaps the student had a family emergency or a late night and forgot to cite his sources properly. In this scenario, I was able to apply virtue ethics and be lenient on my peer. One weakness in virtue ethics is that it does not take an individual's changes...

...University Employment and employee go hand and hand at some point in life. Work is defined as, exertion or effort directed to produce or accomplish something; labor; toil and employment is, an occupation by which a person earns a living; work; business (Dictionary.reference.com (2014). As the Chief Operating Officer (COO) in a midsize company preparing for an Initial Public Offering (IPO). I have discovered multiple personnel problems that require immediate attention and faced with difficult decisions to be made. In this paper I will discuss the employment-at-will-doctrine and examine three scenarios described, analyze whether legally I can fire the employees by including an assessment of any pertinent expectations to employment-at-will doctrine, the primary actions I should take to limit liability and impact on operations and examine the state’s policy on employment-at-will by analyzing one real-world example of an employee or employer utilizing state’s employment-at-will doctrine in the last five-year. As an astute manager, I have analyze the employment-at-will doctrine and determine what, if any, exceptions and liabilities exist before taking any action. As I proceed with the investigation, I discover the company has no whistleblower policy. The employment-at-will doctrine is the legal doctrine that gives employers a broad discretion to fire employees “for good reason, a bad reason, or no reason at all.” Whistleblowers are people who decide to report unethical or illegal...

...Running head: ANALYSIS OF AN ETHICAL DILEMMA Analysis of an Ethical Dilemma NRS 437V December 11, 2011 Analysis of an Ethical Dilemma Euthanasia, sometimes referred to as mercy killing, is an act by a third party that causes a patient’s death. Such acts include administering a lethal dose of medication by way of injection or mask, usually to a seriously ill patient. This analysis will discuss the ethics of euthanasia as it relates to nursing, laws, society, and the stakeholders involved in the scenario. The American Nurses Association (ANA) believes that the nurse should not participate in Active euthanasia because such an act is in direct violation of the Code for Nurses with Interpretive Statements, the ethical traditions and goals of the profession, and its covenant with society. (Task Force on the Nurse's Role in End-of-Life Decisions, 2011) While patient advocates should be vigilant for providing diligent care, they should perform their tasks with respect, support and due commitment towards their care. In healthcare practice, in order to relieve pain and suffering, there is an obligation to promote dignity and autonomy of patients. Euthanasia is a complex issue in which nurses are uncomfortable determining the life and death of a patient. Nurses have to practice ethical principles of beneficence, which maximize benefit and reduce potential risk and harm to the patient. Non-malfeasance is another ethical issue in which a nurse should do no harm. A competent...

...the moral, values, and ethics are acceptable only after the profit is ensure. A valuable professional would make the difference and face the situations taking in to consideration ethics first. The ethics simulation game would provide two different dilemmas that would help the students to practice their managerial skills trying to make the best ethical decisions possible. In the simulation game, two dilemmas were presented. First the laboratory communicated to Quality Management that the analysis has shown that there is contaminant in the GBS – Fibranafren, which is an ingredient used in the majority of the company products. The results from the laboratory arrived after the products were already released and after taking into consideration the facts that everything indicates that the products are contaminated. However, the contamination is bellow FDA standards, and it would only affect a limited group of people with continued use of the product. The dilemma in this case is, whether the company should warn the consumers about the contamination and what kind of information should be provided to them. In the second scenario the FDA increased the official standards and under this new regulation the contaminated product no longer meets the stipulations required for the FDA. The company would not be able to distribute the products in the USA anymore. A new opportunity arises when the marketing analysis manager detailed, in an e-mail, that in many other countries the regulations...

...persons way of life through their distinction of values. Since the first week of this class I have managed to grow in the way I think about ethical decision making. After reading and analyzing different theories my views have been focused on Aristotle and Confucius. I noticed a lot of the ideas they had were already instilled in my life. The way my family grew me up with such a balanced foundation made me the person I am today. To focus on life's true virtues and the backbone of a family has made me a stronger individual.I take these values with me everywhere I go and in everything I do. I strongly believe you are what you think. Whatever you are doing, whatever your feel, or want are determined by the quality of your thinking. With ethics I have leaned to control this process and open my mind to new ideas. Thinking effectively gives you greater control of your life and the world around you.You can use your mind to achieve your goals as well as enhancing your life. Everyday work and life is a sequence of ideas, values, and thinking. Ethics helps to raise your decision making abilities by creating a pattern of conscious choices. These choices and value can have an impact in our life through professional and personal situations. Ive learned to use ethics and exercise these principles in these specific scenarios. By acting upon these scenarios in the proper way we can make the correct judgements. When we are working or dealing with people in our lives we should carry good values...

...REPORT The Importance of Ethical Decision Making WGU Toy Company A decision with ethical concerns is significant and comes with greater consequences than ordinary, everyday decisions. Key to ethical decision making throughout the organization is providing a written code of ethics for your business. By having a written code of ethics the importance and value of knowing right from wrong behavior is emphasized. This provides an atmosphere where moral values and principles are a priority. Instead of having employees unsure about making decisions, these written ethical principles deliver guidelines to maintain consistent and appropriate decisions. Having a code sets the tone and drives expectation for its use. It makes it clear that your company wants you to make the ethical choice, and they will support and defend you when you do. Another key to ethical decision making is training. This integrates the ethics code into the workplace. “These should be embedded as part of the culture in the organization” (Abdullah, 2013). Providing employees with tools for critical thinking and good decision making empowers employees from the very start. Training creates recognition for ethical issues and provides guidance for finding and making an ethical choice. It prepares employees for forward thinking to handle unanticipated situations and face new problems. It reinforces the significance of every employee’s responsibility to uphold the company’s principles. It gives the employee a...

...structure of care, and patient focused outcomes. Process indicators measure methods of assessment, intervention, and nurse job satisfaction. Structure indicators include the supply of nursing staff, skill level, and education. Outcome indicators are those that improve if there is a greater quantity or quality of nursing care. These indicators help determine links between patient outcomes and the nursing care provided (American Sentinel University, 2015). Since 1998, indicators have been reported to the National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators (NDNQI). That data has been used to evaluate nursing care at the unit level (Montalvo, 2007). In this scenario, Mr. J was restrained, developed a pressure ulcer, and his daughter had a negative experience. It is difficult to answer why these developments occurred because the scenario is limited in details. However, if the nurses caring for Mr. J were aware that the use of restraints is a nursing-sensitive indicator perhaps more alternative interventions would have been attempted. If the nurses knew that a nosocomial pressure ulcer is a nursing-sensitive...

...Reporting Practices and Ethics Paper Financial reporting and the ethical standards that coincide are important aspects of any health care organization. Health care facilities must report financial statements accurately and fairly. Reported financial data has a huge impact on stakeholders such as investors, patients, vendors, and employees. Health care finance managers should be well versed in the four elements of financial management, generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), and ethical financial standards to ensure acceptable financial practices as well as the sustainability of the organization. Four Elements of Financial Management During the planning process, a financial manager uses the organization’s objectives to develop a systematic process by which the objectives will be met. In order for health care facilities to be successful, there is a large amount of planning involved. Of particular concern is healthcare reform. A health care facility has to plan for compliance issues that will directly affect their bottom line. This includes risk management, new information systems, or the purchase of new equipment. Controlling ensures each department within the health care facility is following prudent financial decisions that have already been set and planned. One example of controlling expenses is to approve or deny capital expenditures. Capital expenditures more often than not increase the organization’s assets. Capital expenditures are also usually included...

...move on to apply which is putting in the effort to come up with an adequate end result. Now that you have the basic knowledge of the first three steps you can move on to analyzing. Analyzing is basically breaking down information to form your analysis. With four steps applied you then begin the process of evaluating which is to evaluate the quality the efficiency of your work and give a reason for your assessment honestly. Finally, you get to creating which is coming up with your ideas from a topic established by your thoughts. To define critical thinking, I would say that the definition of critical thinking is the objective, analysis and evaluation of an issue to form a judgment. In my opinion, critical thinking is taking an issue and creating a better or more efficient solution. The best example I can come up with would have to be Martin Cooper inventor of the cell phone. He used the invention of Alexander Graham Bell the inventor of the landline telephone and came up with a device called the cell phone that allows you to talk while mobile. To come up with an invention of that sort, he would have had to have been a creative/critical thinker. He would have had to come up with an objective analysis and evaluate the want and need of such a product. When looking at the critical thinking process, I have a scenario where I have had to use some of the critical thinking processes. An explanation I would have to use is from my personal experience as a paraprofessional. In the education...
