Questions for Close Reading
1. The selection’s thesis is “Before a teacher can expect students to concentrate, he has to get their attention, not matter what distractions may be at hand” (Sherry 1).
2. Sherry considers the diplomas meaningless because the vanity of the graduating students would be questioned by the employers when they discover that the graduates are semiliterate.
3. Sherry thinks is wrong to pass such student because once the student graduates the employers would expect the student to have basic skills. But because the student was passed, they never go to master those skills since they thought they had already master them.

Questions about the Writer’s Craft
1. Sherry convincers that she is qualified to write about her subject by stating that she herself is a teacher of basic grammar and writing for high school graduates and dropouts. Also, she mentions her own experience with her son being threatened to fail a grade if her not put his act together. The attempt to establish Sherry’s perception to of her to audience point of view, is due to her experience how it is to be a teacher, she knows what she is writing
