...discuss plagiarism and judge an argument. Look at the following points before attempting the assessment. You have just been given an assignment to write an annotated bibliography. Before you begin, you need to know what exactly an annotated bibliography is and how to get started. First, what is an annotation? An annotation is more than just a brief summary of an article, book, Web site or other type of publication. An annotation should give enough information to make a reader decide whether to read the complete work. In other words, if the reader were exploring the same topic as you, is this material useful and if so, why? How is an annotation different from an abstract? While an abstract also summarizes an article, book, Web site or other type of publication, it is purely descriptive. Although annotations can be descriptive, they also include distinctive features about an item. Annotations can be evaluative and critical as we will see when we look at the two major types of annotations. What is an annotated bibliography? An annotated bibliography is an organized list of sources (like a reference list). It differs from a straightforward bibliography in that each reference is followed by a paragraph length annotation, usually 100–200 words in length. Depending on the assignment, an annotated bibliography might have different purposes: * Provide a literature review on a particular subject * Help to formulate a thesis on a subject * Demonstrate the research you...

...For a sample of an entry from an annotated bibliography entry in PDF, click on the downloadable file in the media box above. Below you will find sample annotations from annotated bibliographies, each with a different research project. Remember that the annotations you include in your own bibliography should reflect your research project and/or the guidelines of your assignment. As mentioned elsewhere in this resource, depending on the purpose of your bibliography, some annotations may summarize, some may assess or evaluate a source, and some may reflect on the source’s possible uses for the project at hand. Some annotations may address all three of these steps. Consider the purpose of your annotated bibliography and/or your instructor’s directions when deciding how much information to include in your annotations. Please keep in mind that all your text, including the write-up beneath the citation, must be indented so that the author's last name is the only text that is flush left. Sample MLA Annotation Lamott, Anne. Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life. New York: Anchor Books, 1995. Print. Lamott's book offers honest advice on the nature of a writing life, complete with its insecurities and failures. Taking a humorous approach to the realities of being a writer, the chapters in Lamott's book are wry and anecdotal and offer advice on everything from plot development to jealousy, from perfectionism to struggling with one's own internal critic. ...Creating APA Style Annotated Bibliographies, 6th Ed. Annotated bibliographies are not specifically addressed in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 6th ed. We have taken the example given online at the OWL at Purdue1 as the basis for formatting. It is a good idea to take careful note of any directions given in your assignment, and to check with your professor if you have specific questions. Contents 1. 2. 3. Guidelines Sample Annotated Bibliography Sample Standard Reference List/Bibliography Guidelines The following is a summary of things to know when creating an APA style annotated bibliography: The annotated bibliography consists of two elements o Citation in current APA style format o Annotation The annotation will follow the citation on the next line. There is not an extra space— double spacing is used throughout. An annotation is different from an abstract. It should have several sentences summarizing the main points or ideas found in the item. It should then include your own statement evaluating the quality of the item and/or relating the item to your own research topic. For a longer annotated bibliography, it is appropriate to divide into sections or topics, and to title those sections as seems fitting. Note: These annotations are for illustrative purposes only and have no relationship to the content of the sources. The citations are from the sample list found at the end. 1 http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/614/03/ Sample...

...Annotated Bibliographies Annotated bibliographies describe, give publication information for, and sometimes evaluate each work on a list of sources. When we do research, we may consult annotated bibliographies to evaluate potential sources. In this course, you will also be assigned to create annotated bibliographies to weigh the potential usefulness of your sources and to document your search efforts so that your instructor can access your ability to find, describe, and evaluate sources. There are tow kinds of annotations, descriptive and evaluative; both may be brief, consisting only of phrases, or more formal, consisting of sentences and paragraphs. For the purpose of this class we will be using the more formal style, since we are using this writing to fulfill your writing requirement Evaluative Annotations Key Features in Annotated Bibliographies A statement of scope. ...Annotated Bibliography Drugs in Sport Calum Thouless Legend 2154980 (Kumar Neeraj, 2011) Spelling - Red Grammar - Green Sentence construction - Yellow Incorrect reference - Blue In this article Kumar Neeraj, Paul Maman and Sandhu J.S perform a survey to increase their knowledge and insight as to why the supporting factors of psychological and social could potentially lead players towards using drug abuse substances. The authors gained primary data by conducting surveys which 303 players participated in, with the questions consisting of performance enhancing attitudes, perfectionism and motivation among other factors. Their research focuses on reviewing the player’s answers to their surveys and their opinions on the different factors which could lead to drug abuse. This article is helpful to me as it indulges into the players own personal opinions on what factors lead to drug abuse in sports and there are multiple surveys in which these opinions are portrayed. The main limitation of the article is that the 303 participants were all in the age group of 18 to 35 which limits the opinions to older/former players or athletes. The authors of this article mention how much of this research is restricted to an individual’s perception rather than a whole team’s perception and that more in depth research needs to be conducted in order for this entire subject to be concluded. (Nadra E. Lisha, 2010) In this article the authors review data of 34 peer-reviewed quantitative...

...In “Annotated Bibliography” I learned the importance attaching notations to sources. The effectiveness of that combination in strengthening a paper by having a solid foundation for ideas and arguments with credible sources. It basically contributes to the execution of the thesis and goal throughout the paper using the format of a summary with main topics and sources for potential use in your paper. The challenging work of a paper is gathering main ideas/elaboration and finding sources to support your perspective. In utilizing an annotated bibliography, it is easing the difficult portion of writing an investigative paper. After the initial review, select those works that provide useful information/perspectives on your topic. 4. Create an APA style reference entry for each item. 5. ...The Great Gatsby Research Prospectus and Annotated Bibliography A prospectus is a summary of a proposed research project. The purpose of writing a short prospectus is to help you get a sense of your project and hopefully gain a starting point for your work. How to proceed? Start by reading and taking notes on 2-4 reference articles, review articles, or key research articles. You will most likely be using a search engine or online database. This initial phase is meant to familiarize yourself with America in the 1920s. As you read more and more, you will hopefully find a particular subject or topic that you think is worth writing about. Again, this is not only a research paper, but it is a synthesis work in which you must take elements from the time period and connect them to the novel. ...Directions for Annotated Bibliography You will provide an annotated bibliography of 25 references that you plan to use for your research paper. This must be in APA format, with a cover page and references that each includes a summary, analysis and reflection. This assignment is due by 12 midnight (EST) on the Sunday of Week 3. Why do an annotated bibliography? The Writing Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill provides an excellent response: A good annotated bibliography: • encourages you to think critically about the content of the works you are using, their place within a field of study, and their relation to your own research and ideas. • proves you have read and understand your sources. • establishes your work as a valid source and you as a competent researcher. An annotated bibliography is a list of sources and includes APA formatted references to the articles, books and resources (all which should have been found through the Liberty University Online Library) which one has compiled for a research assignment. Following each reference is a brief description and an evaluation of the source. The purpose of an annotated bibliography is to benefit the researcher and provide the content, relevance and quality of the sources. Do NOT simply cut and past the abstract as the annotation, as they are not the same. Abstracts are summaries of a source, whereas annotations also include a short summary. Abstracts include a critical...
