Introduction
Plant extracts can be very significant in the therapeutic treatment of microbial infections and extracts are often purified and incorporated into commercially available remedies7. These chemical compounds, referred to as secondary metabolites, are produced by plants as part of their defence mechanism in response to microbial infection7. Plants such as lemon (Citrus limon)2, mint (Mentha piperita)8, garlic (Allium sativum)3, and roots such as ginger (Zingiber officinale)3 produce active compounds which have demonstrated antimicrobial activity and are commonly used in commercially available remedies to treat microbial infections of the upper respiratory tract7. These compounds include nitrogenous alkaloids, flavonoides5 and polypeptides7. Common causative agents of bacterial upper respiratory tract infections (URT) include Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus pyogenes and Klebsiella pneumoniae 4. This study aims to look at the antimicrobial effect of commercially altered natural products: a capsule containing allium sativum oil 1 mg (equiv. to 3 grams fresh bulb ) and a peppermint dried leaf infusion to determine their efficacy against the test bacteria. Antimicrobial activity of freshly prepared substances (garlic, ginger, mint and lemon) was compared to the commercially prepared substances using disc diffusion assays. Minimum inhibitory concentrations were then determined from products that displayed antimicrobial activity.

Materials and Method
Initial Screening Each substance was prepared to desired consistency appropriate for disc diffusion assay Two horse blood agar (HBA) and two nutrient agar plates were inoculated with bacteria to grow a lawn culture. HBA agar was used to grow Streptococcus species, NA for K. pneumoniae. A diffusion disc was impregnated with each test substance preparations and placed on the agar plate. Plates were then incubated at 37o C for 24 – 48 hours. Antimicrobial activity was determined by the zone of inhibition. Substances that did not show anti-microbial activity were omitted from further testing. MIC was determined by performing a two fold serial dilution with [2 X] test substance and combining it with molten NA. Calf serum was added to mixture to support the growth of the Streptococcus species

Discussion
Garlic contains many antimicrobial compounds, however it is most known for containing an organosulfur compound allicin (diallyl thiosulfinate)6. As outlined in Table 1, the commercially prepared capsule containing purified allicin had minimal impact on the growth of the three test microbes. In comparison, raw garlic that was freshly minced was able to inhibit growth on all three test species. Allicin is not present in garlic cloves, instead exists as a precursor alliin within the cell wall of the clove6. When the clove is damaged (minced), the cell wall ruptures, and alliin is transformed into allicin by the enzyme, allinase6. Over time, antimicrobial activity of allicin decreases4, offering a possible explanation for the capsules inactivity as opposed to the fresh preparations activity. Allicin inhibits the acetyl-CoA- forming system in bacteria as well as other thiol containing enzymes by reacting with the thiol groups within the microbe6.

Fig 5. Target site of Allicin within the acetyl – CoA forming system in the Citric acid cycle.

Discussion
As shown in Table 1, pure lemon juice had an inhibitory effect on the growth of S. pneumoniae and K. pneumoniae. Diluted lemon juice had minimal effect on the growth of both streptococci sp. but inhibited the growth of K. pneumoniae at all concentrations indicative of an MIC less than 12.5%. Alkaloids and flavonoids derived from lemon have been shown to have a range of antimicrobial activities including inhibiting cell proliferation5, causing cell membrane damage5, inhibiting nucleic acid synthesis5 and inhibiting energy metabolism5. Variances in susceptibility between the test substances as observed in Table 1 can be explained by substance permeability throughout the agar1,8, the cell wall and the microbial colony. The extent of damage to the cell wall could also explain variances.

Fig 6. Example of how flavonoids can reduce bacterial colonies on agar

Conclusion: According to this study, certain raw products had an inhibitory effect on the growth of microbes that are commonly associated with upper respiratory tract infections more than their commercial counterparts. Further studies are necessary to explore a broader range of products and extraction methods.

Why Renting in Today’s Economy Is Better Than Buying a House

...Why Renting in Today’s Economy is better than Buying a House Matt Harrell COM/156 November 7, 2010 Karen Campbell Why Renting in Today’s Economy is better than Buying a House Foreclosure crisis is at an all time high across most large metropolitan areas in the United States. Seattle- Tacoma- Bellevue metro area registered the sharpest annual increase, 71% or one in every 129 households received a foreclosure notice. California, Nevada, Florida, and Arizona remain the hotspots for foreclosure across the nation according to RealtyTrack Incorporated Rick Sharga a senior vice president at RealtyTrack quoted “The epidemic is spreading from the states at the ground zero of the foreclosure problems out into areas that had not been previously affected.” One of the latest signs that the foreclosure crisis is worsening across the nation is, high unemployment, slow job growth, and homeowners are uncertain about falling home prices. Concerning housing, he or she has options. He or she has an option to rent and an option to buy. Renting an apartment is a better option than buying a house both renting and buying has many advantages and disadvantages. By explaining these advantages and disadvantages, I will persuade him or her into renting over buying. While renting he or she can save money, instead of spending money. “A survey conducted by Harris Interactive for the National Apartment Association in May 2010 found that 76% of those surveyed now believe that renting is a better...

Our analysis showed he should obtain $450,000 through a 20-year mortgage at 8%, as was offered to him by Sarah Harris, in order to invest in this property. The Property The property is located at 19 Pinckney St. in the back slope of the historical neighborhood of Beacon Hill in Boston. It is a 4-unit residential building, which a fire has destroyed in 2003, and thereafter only the structural shell remained. An architect started renovating it but stopped in the middle due to lack of funds. The asking price is set at $350,00. A contractor priced the remaining work at $165,000 and said it would be completed within 6 months; thereafter, the building will have three 2-bedroom apartments and one 1-bedroom apartment on the top floor. Alexander estimates that he would be able to do the reconstruction himself and it would take him only 4 months. This assumption seems unrealistic given Alexander’s full-time job and lack of experience in construction. It is also assumed that if he insisted to do so, lenders will be hesitant to finance his project. Therefore, total approximate cost of the renovated building is $515,000. Location This location has been demonstrating rising property values. Newbury Street, Financial District and the Boston Commons are within less than a 15-minutes walk. Potential renters will also appreciate the proximity of the river and esplanade within a 10-minute walk. The neighborhood...

Dimensions of conflict that can arise between hotel operators and owners are examined. Consistent with expectations motivated by agency theory, data collected suggest that capital budgeting systems in hotels operating under a divorced owner / operator structure exhibit more formalisation and a greater propensity for investment proposal cash forecast biasing. These findings suggest a degree of dysfunctionalism associated with the divorced / owner operator structure widely adopted in the hotel industry. The Rental Heart

...The rental heart Often when you fall in love you will end up with a broken heart. That happens to everyone at some point. But why not just go and rent a new heart? That is what he is doing in the text and what the story is about. And yes I think the main character is a boy, because if it was a girl, that had got her heart broken, it would be much more dramatic. The main character keeps getting hurt, so instead of dealing with the pain, he just visit the heart rental place, and rent a new heart. But even though he keeps getting a new heart, in someway it does not make him fully recoverer. Because the pain is not only in your heart ,it is also in your mind. So even though the pain in the heart is gone, the pain in the mind is still there. The title “ The rental heart” is very describing for the text. Often when you read a text, the title does not really have so much to do with the rest of the story. But that is not the case in this story. Because this story is about a guy, getting his heart broken, and the rent hearts. So the title is very appropriate. His first love was Jacob, and it is clearly that he was very much in love with him. “Jacob was as solid and golden as tilled field, and our love was going to last forever, which in our age meant six months. Every time Jacob touched me, I felt my heart thud wetly against my lungs”. The story takes use of flashbacks, as you can see in the quote above.
