Introduction:
Individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities often have deficits in social skills development, especially in the areas of social interactions and engagement. However, there is limited research on social skills intervention within this population and the current body of research on developmental/intellectual disabilities is focused on children. Having challenges in social interaction and engagement can lead to difficulties in adulthood, such as struggling to understand others, misinterpreting what another person said or not responding appropriately (Myles, Coffin Owens, Yantes, 2014). This can result in the individual feeling lonely and frustrated. Walton & Ingersoll (2013) only found 17 studies that had a broad …show more content…
Individuals are taught new skills that target certain social behaviors. An example is an individual learning how to use a camera to take pictures of peers and staff at the center. They are taught to ask permission before taking a photo and how to properly care for the camera.
I chose Arc Media as the intervention to examined for this research project. I researched and collected data on Arc Media participants to determine if it decreased challenging behaviors and increased socials skills. By completing the Single-Subject (SSD) paper and poster presentation, I have increased my knowledge of research skills and …show more content…
Adults with disabilities are often limited in their community participation for a variety of reasons including communication difficulties. By working with individuals on their communication skills can help to increase their community participation.
The importance of community participation and social inclusion is also noted by Asselt, Buchanan & Peterson (2015). The primary focus was on the enablers and barriers of social inclusion for young adults. A few enablers of social inclusion included the individual’s motivation, acceptance within the community, and the ability to attend events of interest. The authors also touch on factors that adults with an ID that restrict engagement in the community including prejudicial and aggressive acts, indifferences, and stereotypical roles or activities.
Walton & Ingersoll (2012) examined seventeen social skills interventions studies for improving positive behaviors. Two of the theoretical frameworks found included behavioral intervention and structured teaching. These frameworks can be applied to Arc Media and learning the varying aspects of
