And then in the second stanza the author starts to show the obvious inconsistencies so that inter relationships surface. In the third stanza the author gives insight on to how the scene is parallel to American culture on a larger scale. Olds uses imagery to show the significant difference between the black boy (the observed), the white woman (the narrator) and the observer as they all sit in the same subway. The main focus of the stanza is his sneakers that are black “laced with white”. The white woman describes the white laces as “intentional scars”. These “scars” are supposed to show the reader the discrimination of blacks by white society. The use of the word intentional shows the reader that the whites intended to harm blacks mentally and physically on purpose. This image compares blacks and whites by saying that whites are powerful and blacks are meant to be compliant. The two characters are on two opposite sides of the train, stuck there, and permanently separated from each other. Next the clothing is describes and is used as another contrasting element. In this image the black boy is “exposed” opposed to the white person who is covered in fur. The image is used to reinforce the opposition. In the second stanza the tone change…In the first...

How Do Videos Games Affect Youth Negatively?

...Anthony J Capozzoli Jessica A. T. Gilpatrick Research Paper Final Draft October 12, 2014 How does video games affect youth negatively? One of the main concerns that have constantly been raised against video games is that most of the games feature aggressive elements. This has led many people to assert that this may have a detrimental effect on individuals who play such games. Despite continuing controversy for over 15 years, there has been little in the way of systematic research. The one consistent finding is that the majority of the studies on very young children - as opposed to those in their teens upwards - tend to show that children do become more aggressive after either playing or watching a violent video game. Research suggests that children and teens that playing and watching video games over an extended period of time tend to be more aggressive, are more prone to struggle in school, and more prone to be obese or overweight. One of the ways that the videogames affect children and teens that play and watch for an extended period of time is that they tend to be more aggressive. In “Children, Adolescents, and Television,” it has been stated that even more important than the amount of time spent playing video games is the content of games played (2001). Research shows that up to 90% of all video games contain some sort of violent content and in a survey of 213 adolescents, 99% of boys and 84% of girls said that at least one of their current video games has...

Constitution Timeline

...The United States Constitution is the single most important document in American history. It was inscribed in a time period where the people wanted something that was written in a way that showed what we stood for and what we aspired to become without fear of persecution. The Constitution was carefully thought-out through the process of documents that came before it impacting how the country would evolve. These documents and events are as follows; Magna Carta, Mayflower Compact, Declaration of Independence, Articles of Confederation, and Federalists Papers. These different pieces were part of the puzzle that was made on the ideas of making a great new country where all were welcomed. In 1215 the beginning of the new ideals were set in motion. The purpose of the Magna Carta was to force King John of England to sign a document stating that his power would be reduced, thereby giving some of the power towards forming the first parliament. This became the building blocks for the English citizen’s rights. The Magna Carta consisted of 37 different laws that limited the King’s power by requiring written permission before making rules for the people. This document was first written by Archbishop Stephen Langton and the most powerful Barons of England and was originally called the ‘Articles of the Barons’. Five days later on June 15, 1215, they gave a formal royal grant and based on the agreements made, the name of the document was called the Magna Carta. (lordsandladies.org, 2014) ...

A Computerized World

...A COMPUTERIZED WORLD Since the first computer was made in the late fifties, technology has developed extremely. Computers which took the place of a living-room then, are now being made in credit card- formats. More and more areas are being taken over by the computer. As computers are capable of handling large amounts of data in a very short time, they are well suited for word-processing. I guess that it won't be long till all the paper-archives are replaced by magnetic tapes and diskettes. A diskette can contain much more data than a written page, and it takes less place! It is possible to get the Norwegian telephone book on just one diskette. In near future, a new area will be taken over by computers, namely maps. Different routes are stored on one single compact-disk. Imagine, simply insert the CD into the CD-driver in your car, and tell the computer where to go. The rest will be done automatically. This will be a safer, faster, and more comfortable way to travel. Another new area, called "virtual reality" is currently being tested. This is a way to simulate reality on a monitor. in order to feel this so-called reality you have to wear special electronic glasses and an electronic suit. Fastened to the suit are sensors, which send information to the main computer. This computer works with the data and displays them on the electronic spectacles. This is a technique which use three-dimensional views, therefore the scenery seems incredibly realistic. If you want to be...

Hinduism

...Hinduism The earliest know evidence of Hinduism dates back about 4000 years ago to the Indus Valley Civilization. The Indus Valley Civilization lived along the Indus River. This area is known today as Pakistan, which is north of India. They lived in elaborate cities that were well planned. The streets were straight, buildings made of brick, sophisticated water and sewer systems, and large water facilities. They were prosperous traders and farmers. The ancient cities were called Harappa and Mohenjodaro. Researchers have found archeological evidence of the Indus Valley Civilization but many aspects of their lives are still a mystery because of the inability to read their writing. The highest level of government may have been religious priest, Rajahs may have been rulers of the city, researchers believe there was some sort of government but much remains a mystery about the civilization and the beginning of Hinduism. Hinduism is one of the most complex religions of the world. There is no single scripture or single founder. The religion was developed from Brahmanism. Brahman in Hinduism is the highest god. Hinduism is believed to be one of the oldest religions. It is the religion of the Indian people, Aum is the symbol of Hindu, and the texts are Shruti and Smriti. Many scriptures, rituals, and chants are found in the text. Most people of this faith are vegetarians especially beef since the cow is considered sacred. Worship is conducted in temples with priest, shrines at home,...

...interested in researching was the correlation between teenage mood swings and sleep deprivation. As a parent, you anticipate the days of dealing with teenager who is experiencing mood swings. I have a sixteen-year-old daughter who is constantly going through mood swings. One minute her and I will be engaged in a nice conversation and literally the next minute I am her worst enemy. There is no way a parent can prepare themselves for what they will deal with when it comes to being a parent to a teenager. When a teenager is experiencing a mood swing we tend to refer to as being hormonal changes. I wanted to explore the option of it being more related to sleep patterns and deprivation. In a research study found in the Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine (July, 2010), it was learned that a teenager who gets less than nine hours of sleep is defined as being sleep deprived. It was found that a biological change occurred which involved a shift in the teenager’s circadian rhythms. When there is a shift in this rhythm it calls for later wake times. It was discovered that teenagers have a hard time falling asleep before 2300, which in turn, shift their waking to around 0800. In another study, researchers took two groups and conducted an experiment of sleep deprivation on the emotional center of the brain which is responsible for mood swings. One group of young students were allowed a good night’s sleep and another group stayed awake for...

Technology and Social Change Final

...though we create advancements in technology, even the society that makes those changes is impacted as well. This paper will address the impact of personal computers, cell phones, and the Internet on society. This paper will also review technological developments that relate to the three major sociological perspectives such as; equilibrium model, digital divide, and cultural lag. The use of computers has increased dramatically over the years, and the use of computers has changed the lives of many people and how they do things. Computers are a very complex tool, but they are also very useful. Computers can be used for many different functions such as; keeping in touch with distant relatives and friends, research, conducting business, doing homework, or for entertainment. Computers are a very useful piece of technology that most people have and use at home or work. Being on the computer can take away from being productive and cause procrastination for most. Everton, Jolton, and Mastrangelo (2006) state, “Computers have undoubtedly changed the way people work, but they have also changed the way people avoid and sabotage work” (p. 730). The Internet ties personal computer and smartphones together which has affected current sociological issues that are affecting us. Then Internet is very appealing to users because you can use the Internet for almost anything.
