...Good Action/Good Person I consider a good action to be something that helps others and is unselfish. Within the last year I have helped my Grandma through her cancer treatments. I believe that this is a good action because it was helping my Grandma in a time of need when she needed an extra hand. I took time out of my school schedule in order to help her get to and from the treatments, helped her around the house and visited with her giving moral support. I would get up early and drive her to the doctors every morning then go to school and then back to her house to take her to the doctor’s office again later on in the day. She had surgery twice and each time I spent the night at her house just to make sure she would be alright since she was not used to taking medicine. It was a rough couple of weeks but worth every minute of my time. In the end she was cancer free. A good action is something that you do not have to do but choose to do so just to help others. I decided to help my Grandma because I thought it was the right thing to do and it was something that I wanted to help her get past it. I call helping my Grandma through her cancer treatments as a good action because it helped her through a very difficult time and made me feel good about helping her. I wish I would have gotten the chance to do this on better circumstances but I would not change my decision for anything I know that my Grandma greatly appreciated everything that I did for her and that is all the thanks I...

...Ra’Nishia Gray Engl 1123 Mr. Oliver 16 February 2014 Good People Change Due To Bad Situations In “Revisiting The Stanford Prison Experiment: A Lesson In The Power Of Situation” By Philip G. Zimbardo the author purpose for writing this article is to inform people that people morals and behavior can change when they are put in positions of authority. For example “Psychologists had also found that research participants were often willing to obey authority figures even when doing so violated their personal beliefs.” (Zimbardo 302).The exigence of this article is the power within social groups. “They showed, for example, that groups of strangers could persuade people to believe statements that were obviously false” (Zimbardo 302). The target audience is people of power, politicians, psychologist, and college students. The context is “The Yale studies by Stanley Milgram in 1963” (Zimbardo 302). Zimbardo thesis was, “The critical message then is to be sensitive about our vulnerability to subtle but powerful situational forces and, by such awareness, be more able to overcome those forces. Group pressures, authority symbols, dehumanization of others, imposed anonymity, dominant ideologies that enable spurious ends justify immortal means, lack of surveillance, and other situational forces can work to transform even some of the best of us into Mr. Hyde monster”(Zimbardo 307). One of my supporting is “In one experiment from 1969, female students who were made to feel anonymous...

...When Bad Things Happen to Good People Man’s search for understanding why bad things happen to people have raised many issues and challenges resulting to some questioning their faith. When tragedy occurs many are quick to ask why, and begin to question God for allowing those things to happen. We often blame others, ourselves, or even God, resulting to bitterness, hatred, and even loneliness. How tragic the news is when we hear something very distressing or how awful it is when it hits so close to home. Why do we react in that manner? Why must we blame God? Why do bad things happen to good people? Harold Kushner’s, When Bad Things Happen to Good People allows one to better understand why he wrote the book and his positive insight bringing light to a seemingly dark matter. Kushner is a Rabbi, a man of God, whom “spent most of his life trying to help other people believe, and was compelled by a personal tragedy to rethink everything he had been taught about God and God’s ways (p.3)”. Hence, it was difficult for Kushner to fathom why or how this could happen to him, his son, and his family. It is easy to sympathize with Kushner because we would probably have reacted in the same way if we were in his shoes. True, it seems unfair how bad things can happen to some, more than others, especially if one attempts to live a life led by God and believes in the goodness of the world, we ask, "how can God let this happen? Kushner contends that the main reason...

...When Bad Things Happen to Good People By: Harold Kushner Pablo Falcon Spring 2010 When Bad Things Happen to Good People Written by: H. Kushner “When Bad Things Happen to Good People” is a very personal book. The author talks about his belief in God and how people perceive the situations they get in as an act of God himself. The author explains that when unfortunate happenings occur people tend to blame it on God or the simple fact that the unfortunate happened because “the person must have deserved it”. The author also reflects upon the feelings that many people have when something bad happens to them or a loved one. They begin to question their faith. Why didn’t God answer my prayers? Is God real? What is God her for anyway? The main point the author illustrates is that the things that happen are not God’s doing. There is one point in the book that Kushner makes about how flight 205 crashed instead of flight 209. The plane crash caused people to die. God did not choose what families to afflict tragedy and pain on. If it was God’s choice he wouldn’t have had any of the planes crash. God gave flight 205’s families the courage to live on and look forward to the future. He did not cause the plane crash. Kushner says that, “Adam and Eve ate from the ‘forbidden tree’, also known as the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil”. Adam and Eve were given a test to see if they were going to be human or animal. Humans face choices. Animals have instincts. Adam and Eve became...

...People may often come across situations where a question regarding the suffering of good people becomes unavoidable. The Bible provides examples of the question through the suffering of Jesus Christ in his crucifixion, written in the book of John, as well as the trials placed on Job, where God tests his righteousness in the Old Testament. Although most of their losses are relatively the same, the purpose behind their stories are distinctly different from each other. Job, who unexpectedly witnesses his possessions being stripped from him, approaches his situation much differently than Jesus who acts more accepting of his situation. The idea of suffering may easily become intolerable, though these two major stories of Job and Jesus teaches individuals to have a deeper insight on how to deal with unbearable conditions. The suffering that both Job and Jesus face easily allows them to question their faith towards God for watching their pain to progress. The character of Job is introduced as a wealthy man with many possessions and described as “blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil.” (Job 1:8). Job is tested as he is stripped of his herd of animals, and his numerous children, causing him to grieve and still says, “The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away; may the name of the LORD be praised.” (Job 1:20) In the second chapter, he is inflicted with physical pain from “the soles of his feet to the crown of his head” (Job 2:7). In comparison, Jesus’ suffering begins...

...Michael DiNofa Mr. Stewart Fundamentals of Catholicism 24 March 2015 When Bad Things Happen to Good People The speech “When Bad Things Happen to Good People” by Harold S. Kushner discusses God’s role in tragedy and how humans should respond. Kushner states that a common response to tragedy is, “Why would God allow this to happen?” He says that there is no answer to this question and that he does not know why bad things happen to good people. However, he says that it is not God who is causing the tragedy. He states that we live in an imperfect world where things will happen that are beyond our control. Kushner says that the best way to deal with tragedy is to understand that God did not cause the tragedy and that he is weeping with us. He also states that we must ask ourselves what we can do to get over it and prevent it from happening to anybody else instead of asking ourselves why God would allow it to happen. In the speech, Kushner references the story of Job. The...

...naturally assume that all people desire good things in their lives. By doing good, being good, or attempting to do what is right, people feel good about themselves and receive happiness from their actions or choices. This is in alignment with Socrates’ desire example where he claims that all people desire good things. However, not everyone is satisfied by seeking out good things for themselves. Some people enjoy doing bad things as they attempt to create power, chaos, or anarchy which, in turn, makes them happy and keeps them entertained. Specifically, movie characters such as the Joker from The Dark Knight, the “Other Mother” from Coraline, Dr. Evil from Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, and Professor Moriarty from Sherlock Holmes:...

...and know everything happens for a reason.” ~ Albert Schweitzer. People may change, but learning to let go is a reason. Things go wrong so you can appreciate them when they’re right. Good things may fall apart so that other things may fall together. I believe that all things happen for a reason. Although things may happen when not expected, everything happens for a reason because the reason for something to happen is because nothing can happen without a reason for it to happen. Think positive, good things will happen. Getting through the hard part may be challenging, but in the end good thing will happen. Good things happen because good people make them happen. There is always a reason for good things to happen. People themselves make good things happen....

...refuted by Socrates. (77b-). Socrates counters Meno by asking Meno a series of questions about what it means to desire good things and does anyone really desire anything that is bad. Socrates begin his series of questions by asking what Meno actually means to desire beautiful things, is it the same as to want good things. Meno agrees to this point which leads Socrates to ask Meno if everyone actually desires to have good things. Meno does not agree with this point because some people actually want bad things. Socrates then asks if some people believes bad things to actually be good while others know the bad things are bad and still desire them. Meno believes that there is both kinds of people....

...In John Steinbeck’s novel East of Eden, there is a reoccurring theme of good v evil that appears in all of the characters in this novel. Steinbeck believes that the story of good v evil is the only story in this world that all people struggle with and have to come to a conclusion about. All people will be faced with the final questions; was their life good or bad? Will people remember them as a good person or a bad person? Will their legacy live on or die with them? This struggle is fought by every generation who has to face the same ancient questions time and time again. Steinbeck believes that humans never have and never will learn from the past and overcome this but will continue to fight this battle for all eternity. The theme of good v evil is not of them as polar opposites but as the struggle between them. Every character in this novel struggles with this but some of them give up and decide to go completely one way or another. “But the Hebrew word, the word timshel— ‘Thou mayest’— that gives a choice. It might be the most important word in the world. That says the way is open. That throws it right back on man. For if ‘Thou mayest’— it is also true that ‘Thou mayest not’” (Steinbeck 303). All the characters in this novel that believe in thou mayest struggle the most with good and evil because they know there is a choice and they can choose to go one way or the other. They do not just have to go one way because they think it is in their genes or because they are being pushed...

...be bad: jobs, money, and malfunctions. Technology is not a good idea when one talks about jobs because that would mean more people getting fired. Therefore, the economy of the country would plunge down and become a second or third world country. Also, it would be expensive. It would be expensive because the amount of wires, heart-drives, mother-boards, etc….would cost more than ten people’s pay checks. One other bad thing about technology is that it can malfunction at anytime, which is bad because that means the consumer’s would be extremely upset for not getting their products. For example, a robot is packing a box. All of a sudden, the robot stops or starts throwing it. Then, the people who run the factory will be in big trouble, but also, embarrassed because their customer will not get what they ordered. Another example would be when one sends an e-mail. In one situation, he or she might accidentally send an e-mail to the wrong person, which can lead to good and bad things. For example, in my school, everyone is allowed to send e-mails to the whole school. One day, someone transmits an e-mail talking about buying the school t-shirt. Then, someone e-mails back, and he or she says, “I would like one medium.” The effect of that would be people sending e-mails back to everyone saying, “Stop!” It’s bad because it clogs everyone’s e-mail. Those are some ways technology can be bad. In my opinion, technology can be both good and bad because it will always get better. It’s good because...

...The Characteristics of a Good Boss vs. a Bad Boss According to a U.S. survey, 49% of employees want to fire their boss if they could (GALLUP Management Journal). In every state, there’s a hierarchy of management that keeps the operation running smoothly. A Florida State University did a study in 2007 and according to this study, 40% of workers think they work for an unsuccessful boss (management-issues.com). A large part of having a positive experience at work could depend on whether you have a good, successful boss (journalreview.com). Working as a boss is not easy, and a good boss is even more difficult because there are so many qualities that a boss must have to run a successful business. Leadership and management skills, personality, and a good work ethic are characteristics that a person must have to be a successful boss. A good boss will make their employee’s feel calm, appreciated, and inspired, whereas a bad boss will make you feel uneasy and resentful. A good boss must have leadership skills. A good leader must have the strength to work toward their vision, as well as to direct their actions, and the team’s actions toward the goal. A leader has a clear, vivid picture of where the team and they need to go, as well as a firm hold on what success looks like and how it needs to be achieved. Leaders are able to train others and be honest when an employee is not performing at their best. Leaders lead employees in a way that their talents and skills are utilized...

...Why Death Isn’t So Bad For You When it comes to death, many people are often afraid of the unknown. Because everyone may have their own beliefs about what occurs after death, the thought of death can be scary. Nobody, except for perhaps God (if He exists), knows what happens after death. But if death is defined as total, permanent annihilation, then it really is not bad for the person who dies. I do not mean for this statement to be confused with the attitude that there are no bad aspects of death. Death is not bad for the person who dies because they no longer exist, and therefore anything that happens in any world no longer affects them in any way. Also, one does not need to be afraid of death, because in the state of permanent annihilation, they will not be aware of their loss of life. Before discussing why death is not a bad thing for the person who dies, it should first be noted why total, permanent annihilation is not a bad thing. Permanent annihilation means just that; everything is completely destroyed and non-existent forever. In regards to the asymmetry problem, if pre-natal non-existence is not viewed as something bad, why should post-mortem non-existence be viewed as something bad? Non-existence is not bad thing. There is an infinite list of people, objects, and events that have and will never exist. Is it bad for these people and things that they are non-existent? Many argue that the asymmetry problem does not work because pre-natal non-existence...

People may not think that it matters on the internet, but Wiens says, “Good grammar is good credibility, especially on the internet. In blog posts, on Facebook statuses, in e-mails, and on company websites, your words are all you have.” If people have good grammar on the internet, society tends to think that that person is intelligent and knows what they are talking about. If that person has bad grammar and uses every grammatical short cut there is, then people may begin to think that person isn’t too bright. If an individual doesn’t put their...
