The United States is a nation that leads the world in science and technology. American technology has produced advances in many areas of medicine. As this medical research continues, there has controversy between advancing medicine through testing and preserving life. In the United States and around the world, there have been debates and laws created which demonstrate the controversy in stem cell research. One of the main debates is that stem research can be used to discover cures for illness. Many experts believe stem cell research can be used to help against diabetes, Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer (Lacayo, 2001). However, many people worry that stem cell research will be used for unethical purposes such as human cloning. They also argue that money from the government should not be used to destroy a human embryo. In the United States and around the world there have been many laws regarding stem cell research.
President Bush was the first President that made funds available for stem cell research. (Bush, 2007). According to the National Institute of Health, a government biomedical research organization, President George W Bush announced in August, 2001 a policy which advances stem cell research. Federal funds may be used for research on human embryonic stem cells if the following three requirements are met: 1) the destruction of the embryo must be prior to August 9, 2001, 2) stem cells were removed from embryo for the purpose of reproduction, which “was no longer needed.” 3) the donor had informed consent and did not expect money in return (2006). In July 2001, the House of Representatives introduced a broad anti cloning bill but it was it was not passed in Congress. President Bush said that year in his State of Union address that no life should be used for experiments. Congress was debating the difference between cloning and use of stem cell research (Agnew, 2003). Due to Bush’s 2001 policy scientist who worked on stem cell research received federal funds for only a handful stem cells. Stem cell researchers argued that embryonic excess left over in vitro fertilization should be donated to create research on them but opponents debated that such research still is destruction to human embryo and our federal dollars should not be used to pay for the research (Agnew, 2003).
The Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act of 2005 was vetoed by President Bush. The bill would have reversed some restrictions from Bush’s 2001 policy. (Babington, 2006; Issues in Science and Technology, 2006). President Bush declared an Executive Orders on June 20, 2007 on research on alternative sources of Stem cells. He stated in the Executive Order, “The Secretary of Health and Human Services shall conduct and support research on the isolation, derivation, production and testing of stem cells that are capable of producing all or almost all of the cell types of the developing body and may result in improved understanding of or treatments for diseases and other adverse health conditions, but are derived without creating a human embryo for research purpose of harming or destroying, discarding, or subjecting to harm a human embryo or fetus” (Bush, June 22, 2007). In 90 days of this Executive Order the Secretary should report to President Bush all activities of the research of the stem cells not taken from human embryos. This had to be approved by the Director of the National Institutes of Health. On each year close to December 31, the Secretary has to report to President the activities performed on that year on the stem cell research. The purpose of this order was to ensure the research protected the order of human stem cell as a human subject. Protecting such a stem cell shall not risk of injury and or death allowed for research. This Enhancement establishes moral

Hannah Arendt Modern Jewry

...rules him as compulsively as the drug rules the addict” (80). She explains that since being a Jew is not something you can control, it is not a crime but rather a vice and Jews therefore should not be punished for such. While this seems like it is acceptance of Jews into society, it actually perpetuates the idea that there is something wrong with being a Jew and makes this "vice" an even more present part of their identity thus preventing freedom of expression and encouraging anti semitism by suggesting that race has an effect on morals. As imperialism became more prevalent towards the end of the 17th century, European Jewry began losing influence as their importance as financiers deteriorated and they became a group of generally wealthy yet powerless individuals who still did not fit in socially or politically. Anti semitism had developed by the 19th century when Jews began having little success assimilating into German culture as well as were being blamed for any financial issues they had. Anti semitism in the 19th century peaked during the Dreyfus Affair and marked lost hope for a successful political society throughout Europe. The Dreyfus Affair began in 1894 when Jewish army captain Alfred Dreyfus was arrested for espionage and selling French secrets to the Germans. While Dreyfus was not responsible for the information leak, he was convicted with very little evidence. Years later after discovering the real spy, Dreyfus was released. However, the mere fact that he was convicted...

Romney

...People making less than 250k are hardly losers that don't want to work! Some of the quoted non-workers or people who get "handouts" arent losers who don't work. They are STUDENTS, VETERANS, MILITARY, SENIORS! s You keep going to one issue which is the government aide. I agree that it needs to be filtered but that is such a small issue in the scheme of.things. It's not solely about the economy. It's about social issues as well. For instance, as a woman I am not for my employer deciding whether or not my insurance will cover contraception. Contraception costs approximately $70-100 per month. Romney was indeed for removing the current law that does not allow employers to make this decision. Secondly, in regard to women in the work force I dont want flexible hours so I could get home early to cook my family dinner. I want equal pay!!! Third, I am not for cutting funding to agencies like planned parenthood. This agency doesn't solely perform abortions, it provides preventative care. I have went without insurance and I was able to get an annual checkup without paying a fortune… Also, Romney keeps saying how important Education is yet he did not support extending Pell Grants to make college more affordable. I have a Masters Degree and have tons of loans. I dont think I am getting a hand out by getting my loan from the government instead of the private sector that wants to extort students desperate to get an education. I am gainfully employed due to my education and I'm helping...

Disney

...[justin lewis, journalism, media and cultural studies, cardiff university] “When you have that kind of power, when you’re essentially becoming a dominant storyteller for children globally, we have to begin to ask very serious questions about what kind of stories are being told here. Are these the stories we really want our children to hear? Do we want our children to hear other kinds of stories? And if we don’t ask those kinds of questions, then, essentially, we are allowing disney to shape our children’s imaginations.“ [narrator] The walt disney company has been a powerful force in creating childhood culture all over the world. Disney’s massive success is based on images of innocence, magic, and fun. Its animated films in particular are praised as wholseome family entertainment; endorsed by teachers and parents and immensely popular with children. [Dr. Alvin Poussaint, director, media center, judge baker children’s center] “Children, in fact, have been raised on disney for many generations now.” [Henry Giroux, education, pennsylvania state university] “Disney has made a spectacle of innocence. I mean it hides behind innocence in a way that allows it to separate corporate culture from corporate power and it has a kind of romance about it that allows us in some way to treat disney as the ultimate form of fantasy. Fantasy that never needs to be questioned.” [narrator] Disney is a transnational media conglomerate owning tv and radio networks, cable systems, internet...

The natural tendency for almost all teenagers is to stay up late, and wake up later in the morning, and obviously it can be hard to do that when you have to wake up at 5:30am to get ready for school. What Is Sin from a Wesleyan Perspective

...sermon 3 Original Sin page 5 Wesley is talking about how when we are born into this world we are born we are born a rank idolater. Which translates into “We worship ourselves, when we pay that honour to ourselves which is due to God only. Therefore all pride is idolatry; it is ascribing to ourselves what is due to God alone. And although pride was not made for man, yet where is the man that is born without it But hereby we rob god of his unalienable right, and idolatrously usurp his glory.” (Lyons pg 5) When man fell in the garden of Eden it was the will of Satan to put pride in our hearts because we believed him instead of god about our own immortality that we will not die, and that we had our own will to choose what ever we wanted. Wesley put it this way “Ask the man, "Why did you do this" He answers, "Because I had a mind to it." What is this but, "Because it was my will;" that is, in effect, because the devil and I agreed; because Satan and I govern our actions by one and the same principle. The will of God, mean time, is not in his thoughts, is not considered in the least degree; although it be the supreme rule of every intelligent creature, whether in heaven or earth, resulting from the essential, unalterable relation which all creature bear to their Creator. “(Lyons pg 6 #8) Man decided that he wants to be the governor of his own life, and not to have to bow down to anyone but himself. In thinking that way we build up our own pride that will put a drift between God and...

Whats in It for Me

...What’s in IT for me? When I came to the prestigious University of Cincinnati, I knew, through much of my father’s help, that I wanted to go into the business field. Throughout my freshman year I was unsure of what major I wanted to peruse, but when the Operations Management head, Ruth Sieple, came and spoke to my freshman Pathways class I knew that this major was definitely for me. When she spoke of how people in this major are organized, detail oriented, and like to find more efficient and faster way to complete tasks, those qualification were all mine! I have not taken any core classes in Operations Management yet but I am very excited too in the future. I currently just accepted a job offer with General Electric for next semester in their Operations Management department. I will hopefully be involved with planning and purchasing supplies from their many suppliers, here and abroad, and learning how to manage inventory which is critical in any manufacturing business. A high knowledge of inventory, stocking, designing efficient and productive processes, by effectively allocating resources, controlling inventory, and scheduling projects is obtained when pursuing this specific major. Once one graduates with an Operations management degree, specific job titles such as production manager, operations manager, purchasing manager and agency administrator, just to name a few, can be pursued within this field. Obviously in stating all of that, technology is not only a huge factor...

Universal Basic Income

...period, at least since the aftermath of the world war I. A UBI is an income given without any strings attached to every adult and child (or in some version, only citizens) to provide at least an adequate level of resources. A basic income guarantees each citizen an income sufficient to meet his or her basic needs. The money would be given even regardless of whether the recipients are in the jobs or not. Strikingly for UBI, it is not mean-testing benefits, meaning that no family stuck in poverty traps where benefit withdrawal erodes any increase in earning. Yet, there are many critics of a universal basic income, the most common one is the cost objection. It argues that the cost of providing everyone with an adequate income floor, beneath which no one would fall us out of reach for governments and public finance. Other critics pointed out at some deficiencies that the incentives for people to work would be somewhat eliminated. Yet, what many critics seem to not recognize is that many objections is usually based on inadequate and misleading information, and that the current system of welfare is being implemented obsoletely and ineffectively. In this paper, first, I will demonstrate reasons why the idea of a universal basic income, in terms of feasibility, is financially feasible to be implemented, especially in developed nations. Second, why by doing so would provide more benefits to the people when compare to the currently obsolete and complex system of welfare. And third, the argument...

Environmental Ethics

...of or even the existence of the environmental crisis, this paper will operate under the presupposition that the environment is indeed in dire straits, and that the ultimate solution should produce a utopian society where man and environment are judged equally.  This paper is written from the contentious perspective.  Through this perspective it is implicit; by the environment's current state, coupled with the assumption of human responsibility, and the obligation human morality, the notion that something must be done by humans in regards of addressing the environment's plight. That something; must be different from what is currently, and has historically been done.  The justification for this statement comes from Albert Einstein’s Epitaph.  We need to strike out.  Enacting positive drastic changes in the state in the environment will require drastic changes in our collective ethos.  It is the task of the environmental movement to; not only figure out what these changes are, and which ones will work best, but to also integrate the changes in to the mainstream.  Obviously there must be division of labor within the movement, but ideally this subject should be tackled under consensus.  Unfortunately, however, in reality the environmental movement approaches the task at hand in disunion.  The movement, as seen from the outside, has the goal of keeping human impacts on earth regulated.  The ideology that justifies the movements cause is not shared by the group as a whole.  The distinction...

Corporate Responsibility Essay

...expected as well as the extensive research and documentation required for government contracts. If a part fails to perform correctly it can cause minor glitches as well as problems that can carry serious repercussions, such as in the National Semiconductor case. When both the culpable component and company are found, the question arises of how extensive these repercussions should be. Is the company as an entity liable or do you look into individual employees within that company? From an ethical perspective one would have to look at the mitigating factors of both the employees and their superiors along with the role of others in the failure of these components. Next you would have to analyze the final ruling from a corporate perspective and then we must examine the macro issue of corporate responsibility in order to attempt to find a resolution for cases like these. The first mitigating factor involved in the National Semiconductor case is the uncertainty, on the part of the employees, on the duties that they were assigned. It is plausible that during the testing procedure, an employee couldnt distinguish which parts they were to test under government standards and commercial standards. In some cases they might have even been misinformed on the final consumers of the products that they tested. In fact, ignorance on the part of the employees would fully excuse them from any moral responsibility for any damage that may result from their work. Whether it is decided that an employees is...
