I believe Natalie Zemon Davis provides more convincing evidence that Bertrande was aware that Arnaud du Thil was indeed not her husband Martin Guerre. However there are too many pieces of conflicting evidence to prove that Bertrande knows that Arnaud du Thil was not her husband beyond a reasonable doubt. Despite, the author's clear opinion that Bertrande was aware.
Arnaud du Thil knew a scant amount of Basque, this should have been realized by Bertrande. The author puts forth the argument that it should have been a give away that Arnaud was not Martin due to his inadequacy in speaking Basque (pg 57). Despite the fact that the argument is straightforward there is still a argument to be made. Martin has been gone for eight years by the time Arnaud impersonates him, after this amount of time living in Spain he could have forgotten a fair amount of Basque (albeit unlikely). This is the very thought process Bertrande could have genuinely thought or convinced herself of as a form of justification.
Bertrande may have not had a picture of Martin but she did have Sanxi who was her son fathered by Martin. It is said that Martin has a stocky build and Arnaud does not but since memory fades over time and they didn’t have pictures the best thing to base someone's looks is off their children. Martin says to Bertrande that a wife should know their Husband better than anybody else. (pg 86) The only problem with this is that how could she know who Martin truly is? He abandoned her and their single son at a young age and returned nearly a decade later.
