The Autobiography of Alan May

First I would like to introduce myself briefly. My name is Alan Michael May and I am the son of Randy May and Kris May. I have four beautiful children and a beautiful and loving wife. My childrens names and ages are (starting from oldest to youngest) Dawson Chitwood – 10, Alan May II (refered to as A.J.) – 7, Easton May – 3, Khloe May – 22 months. My wife’s name is Sebrina Joy Chitwood (May) and she is 28.
I will be taking you on a detailed journey into my life! I will start with my place of birth and briefly elaborate along the way on each of the points in my young life that I feel are most impactful on my current life situation. Next , I will take you on a rollercoaster ride through my teen years and into my young adulthood, high’s and low’s. I will close by taking you on a journey, as I find out that I am having my first child and making a big move that will impact the rest of my life, as I know it.
Let’s begin with the year I was born. I was born in 1981 on December 23rd. My Mother Kris, and my Father Randy were only 18 years young. I was born at Whuestoff Hospital in Rockledge, FL. Rockledge is a proud little city that is about 20 minutes inland from Cocoa Beach. My mom has always had the warm memory of bringing me home from the hospital on Christmas Eve dressed in a red one piece and wrapped in a Christmas stocking. I don’t know what it is about that story but I love to hear my mom talk about it. I guess that’s part of the reason why I have always loved Christmas and the Holiday Season. We will now jump forward to my 6th Christmas when I received my first ever bicycle from Santa Clause. Yes it was the first one ever. It was everything I ever wanted and now it was mine. I can remember it clearly, it was red and blue and had the Smurf’s all over it. I rode that thing up and down our driveway and sidewalk and I rode it every chance I got. I can also remember the time when Dad took me for my first real ride in “the street”. I was so nervous and riding in the street was just not going to happen with my mom around. My dad took me “around the block” and when we got back I just thought that I was ‘”The Man”! From that time on my dad would go with me every once in a while around the block but most of the time if I got to ride in the street it was when we were on our way to baseball practice and we happened to walk that day. Practice was only two blocks away so sometimes we would walk if he was home early from work. Yes the young life seemed to be right where anyone would want to stay but as I grew older and gained more responsibility, I grew more curious of the world and the “other things” around me.
Now I find myself in sixth grade, middle school. I am twelve years old and I am starting to realize girls in a different way. There was this girl who had caught my eye from the very first day in Social Studies class. Her name was Michele Gardner, and man did I think she was pretty. She was the first girl who ever really showed some interest in me, as I was showing to her. I knew what I had to do but it was just so hard. I had to ask her to be my girlfriend, and that is exactly what I did. She said yes! I couldn’t believe it, this girl that I had all of these weird feelings about was now my first ever “girlfriend”! We shared a good relationship. I introduced her to my family, she came over for the Holiday’s and everything was going great. We used to sneak out to the portables after school while we were waiting on our rides, and that is where I had my “first kiss”! We dated for over a year and eventually broke up due to us both growing apart. I will never forget her and I will never forget that first kiss!
It is 1994 and as I said I am now 12 years old and I am in a very important part of my baseball life. My Dad is still coaching me and we went undefeated during our regular 20 game season. Yes that’s right 20 – 0. My father took our team to the District Championships and we won our district with ease. Now it was time for the All-Stars tournament. All the coaches in the league of 10, 11, and 12 year olds get together directly after the season and have a voting draft to pick the top 14 players in the league, from all teams. I made the team and it was time to practice and practice hard. There were days when we would practice twice a day because it was now summer time and we were all out of school. My dad was preparing our team to do what no other Rockledge All-Star Team had ever done before, and that was to win the State Tournament and go to the Southeast Regional Tournament and then on to the Little League World Series.
The District Tournament was close to home so we didn’t have to travel far. All of the tournaments were played as a double elimination bracket. We lost our second game of the District Tournament and had to play and win every day for the next 5 days. We ended up coming out of the losers bracket and beat the team twice that had forced us into the losers bracket to win the District 2 All-Star Tournament. We then moved on to the Sectional Tournament which was held in Liberty City, FL. The team was so excited to travel down toward Miami and stay in a hotel as a team. We felt like superstars. We ended up cruising through the Sectional Tournament and went undefeated by beating the hometown Liberty City All-Star Team. Now it was on to the “Big Show”!
Our team arrived in Ft. Myers, FL where the State Tournament was being held. It was the first time since 1972 that a Rockledge team had made it that far in the All-Star Tournament. We arrived, still high on our undefeated Sectional Tournament victory; ready for whatever Ft. Myers had in store for us. We won our first game and got beat in our second game by Bradenton. Bradenton was a tough team but we knew we were better than they were. We fought our way through the loser’s bracket again and found ourselves again facing the team that sent us there in the first place. We now had to beat Bradenton twice to win the whole “Slamma Jamma”! And that was exactly what we intended to do. We beat Bradenton the first game with a comfortable lead that we had kept the entire game. Now it was “gut check” time! Our team had a chance to do something that no other team from our area had ever done. We fought hard, and we had our best pitcher going against them. We were winning 4-2 most of the game until the 5th inning came around. We gave up a point and now we were only winning 4-3. We couldn’t score in the top of the 6th and now it was there turn to hit. They came up and we did not have to face the tough part of their lineup. Bradenton ended up getting a couple of runners on base because of a few mental errors and ended up beating us 5-4. I could not believe that we had just given them the game like that. That was a pretty emotional night for not only us but all of our parents and families who came to see us. That night was the first night that I ever saw my dad cry. I knew that what we were doing was important to him but I never really knew just how important until that night. To this day my father and I still look back and reminisce about that game and how everything went down. I will never forget how much Little League Baseball influenced my life and how Baseball gave me a feeling that I have never felt since.
We are now going to venture into some of the craziest times of my life. That’s right, I’m talking about being a Teenager. This is the point in my life where I can look back and seriously say that I made some very bad decisions. I was a well known kid in the area that I grew up in and my family was also. It seemed like everywhere that my family went someone always knew who we were. So going into High School was starting to get a little bit crazy for me. I didn’t know if my “real friends” were the guys that I grew up around playing sports my entire life or if they were the “misfits” that I now found myself relating to and having some good laughs with. On the other hand, I also was just starting to get into Youth Group at a local church and found myself feeling very comfortable around these new people also. So I was in a dilemma. Do I hang out with the people that I have the most in common with, or do I hang out with the people that are most politically correct to hang around for my families sake. There were all kinds of emotions happening and now I found myself falling in love, again. I was falling for a girl that I met in youth group. Her name was Kristal Smink and it just so happened that her dad ended up being a professional “Elvis Tribute Artist”. Yes that’s right, an Elvis Impersonator! I fell for her hard and I also found myself trying to impress her dad even more that I was her. The only thing that was weird about all of this is that I was also head over heels for her good friend Stacey at the same time. Kristal and I had broken up a couple of times for silly reasons and in between those breakups I found that I was confiding in Stacey a lot. I felt that I was growing closer to her and her family than I ever felt for Kristal and her family. It was a very weird situation because I cared for both of them but I definitely felt a closer connection to Stacey now. Times went on and things stayed weird. Kristal and I finally broke up for good after my senior year and we haven’t been back together since. Stacey and I were very close and I loved her. She ended up moving away to go to college in South Florida and we have seriously fallen out of contact. I miss her sometimes and I often think about her and how she and her family are doing.
My two best buddies in school and in everyday life now were Mike and Corey. They were a blast and still are. We did all kinds of crazy things and got into all kinds of crazy trouble. Mike went to school in Orlando at the University of Central Florida and Corey was an up and coming manager at the Outback Steakhouse chain in the local area. We played baseball together and we always went to sing at the local Kareoke hot spots. We always had a blast. This now brings me to another time when Mike, Corey and I all went to Orlando for the night and got our first tattoos. I was 18 now and I could make my own decisions, so I thought. Moving on, I was still living at my Mom’s House at the time and one of her “rules” was that I could not have any tattoos. Well this new tattoo that we all had gotten did not bode well with my Mother and when she found out about it 2 weeks later she did the inevitable, she kicked me out. She told me that if I was old enough to make those kind of decisions that I was old enough to deal with the consequences of those decisions also. So out I went with nowhere to go and it just so happened that a girl (Tracy) that I ran into at the Kareoke club had just given me a call. I told her briefly about what was going on and she invited me into hers and her mother’s home to stay for a while until I could figure out what I was going to do. Well a little while turned into a long time and a long time turned into 4 years. We eventually moved out of her mom’s house and into our own apartment in Rockledge. We were dating and things were o.k. I had a steady job at a local restaurant and she was working at a daycare right across the street from where we lived. The only bad thing about this is now she was wanting to get serious and I just was not into her that much. I did not really love her and I found myself feeling like our relationship had strictly been based on obligation that I felt toward her for her letting me stay with her when I had nowhere to go. Her mom had moved away and was living in the Atlanta, Ga. area and Tracy had nobody to turn to here if I were to breakup with her and move out. So a few more months went by and she was still trying to push me to get more serious with her. I didn’t know what to do. Well now comes the big “shabang”, Tracy decides to tell me one day that she was pregnant! I flipped out, I did not know how she could get pregnant if she was taking her birth control responsibly. Well, after a little searching and investigating I found that she hadn’t been taking her birth control pills for some time now and I flipped out again. Now I had to do the only thing that I knew to do, I had to marry this girl out of responsibility for our child. So I asked her to marry me. I never felt good about this and never really wanted to do it from the get go. We packed up everything we had and moved to North Florida where my family had recently moved. We had some ties there because my Grandfather had moved to Live Oak, Florida about 30 years prior to this and created a private family airpark where he was constructing homes and developing land to sell to pilots and former pilots and their families so that they would have a place where they could come and bring their families and enjoy having the freedom to fly in and out as often as they wanted to and be able to be right there at home. We settled in at my mom and dad’s house when we got everything moved and decided to stay there for a while until the baby came and try to make things work. I got a job at the local Pizza Hut and quickly moved into management. My son was born on September 7, 2011 in Lake City, Florida and we named him Alan Michael May II, also known as A.J. Everything went fine and we brought him home a few days later and our life began. There were good times and bad times but I thought that we just had to keep plugging away and make this relationship work for the babies sake. Well things started getting worse and we started arguing and fighting more and I got determined to do the right thing. I had to leave her and take the chance for A.J. because he did not need to see our fighting anymore. So I moved out of my mom’s and left her and the baby there and broke up with her. I gave her my income tax money just a few months later to help her move out and she got a place right around the corner from my parent’s house. I was giving her 50 dollars a week just to help out and I was able to see A.J. and keep him as often as I wanted. Then, just a few weeks into this whole thing Tracy started acting really shady. She started telling me that I couldn’t get A.J. unless I took her grocery shopping or I couldn’t get A.J. unless I came over and talked with her about us, and many other things. So I finally had enough and went to see a lawyer. We served her papers for child custody and she went ballistic. It was a long and drawn out court process and it took a little over 2 years for the whole thing to be over but I came out of it victorious and was awarded full custody of A.J. This was the best thing for A.J. because during this 2 year process Tracy had moved back down to Rockledge and had gotten herself in a bunch of trouble with the law. She did not have a stable home setting for him and that is why I fought for him to be with me. I still feel like I give him the best opportunity to succeed in life and I will continue to do so.
Well during this 2 year endeavor I managed to meet my wife, Sebrina. She was a waitress at the Pizza Hut that I started at in Live Oak and had caught my eye the very first day I was there. We flirted with each other here and there and on Valentine’s Day I asked her to be my girl. We dated for a few months and then got engaged. We got married on October 1st, 2005 and have been together ever since. When I met her and started dating her she already had a 3 year old little boy (Dawson) from a previous relationship so when I came in with A.J. it just seemed like our little family was starting to mold. We now have 2 other children together, 3 year old Easton and 1 year old Khloe. My kids are the light of my life and I would truly die for them.
Finally, I would like to wrap this whole thing up with a look into my future. I was employed by the State of Florida Department of Corrections for about 5 years as a Correction Officer and decided to leave there in August of 2011 to pursue my education. I have always been fascinated with Pharmacies and always thought of what it would be like to where one of those cool white jackets. The job with the state was just not what I wanted to do anymore and I did not want to become another statistic that the State of Florida could take advantage of. So here I am, writing this paper for my freshman Psychology class and I am absolutely loving it. I am so excited for what the future holds for my family and myself as an individual. I am going to push as hard as I can to become a Pharmacist but I know that if I can’t do it I will at least be able to fall back on something in the medical field or in business. Yes the future is bright for me and I want to graduate so bad that I can’t stand it.
In closing I would like to say thankyou for taking the time to read about me and my life’s experiences. I would also like to say to those of you reading this, you might be stuck in a hard time in your life right now and you are being faced with difficult decisions; just push through and follow your gut. Everything happens for a reason and never think that it is too late to accomplish anything that you have been dreaming about.

Alex Ferguson

...Alex Ferguson’s leadership style Case study Introduction Alexander Chapman Ferguson, known as Alex Ferguson, was born in 1941, in Govan Glasgow Scotland. As a teenager he was working as a tool’s apprentice in his father shipyard then in his 19, he became a labor union activist and an active member of the “Labor Party”. As far as Ferguson’s “the football player” career is concerned, actually, he did not achieve a successful career. In fact, as a player Ferguson started with a small local football team the “Queens Park and St Johnston” club. Afterward, he got the chance to join the “Glasgow Ranger” club, yet this union did not last since he resigned after being responsible for the defeat of his team against its fierce rival the “Glasgow Celtic” club. So determined, Alex Ferguson joined the “East Stirling” football club but this time as a manager rather than as a player. His first management period lasted for three seasons and then was recruited by the Scottish football team “Aberdeen”. With limited resources, Ferguson achieved the unthinkable, he won with his club the “European Winners’ Cup” during the 1982-3 season. This achievement with “Aberdeen” was a milestone in his career and made him “THE” coach that many big names in the European football scene like Real Madrid, Barcelona, Arsenal, and Tottenham, wanted to engage him. Ultimately, Ferguson chose to join Manchester United (MU). During his reign, Manchester United advanced from an ordinary local team to a top-class national...

Leon Trotsky Significance

...later changing his name to Leon Trotsky, without doubt did indeed emerge during a time of historic turbulence in Russia and was moulded into the political ideologist and leader he was by the resulting stresses that he had encountered. However whether or not he was a great person in terms of his political savvy and ability to catalyse the change that Russia, in an era of great turbulence desperately needed is another issue that needs to be discussed. He was great in that as an individual he did play instrumental roles in the Bolshevik insurrection of 1917 and the civil war, which shortly ensued, however the change in which he intended for Russia and in many ways the entire world did fall short. Trotsky’s shortcomings in this intended change may to be attributed to Stalin’s victory in their political rivalry following the death of Lenin in 1924. Leon Trotsky was born into and lived out his entire life in an era of historic turbulence within Russia. During and following the time of his birth in 1879 Russia experienced wide spread public discontent against Russia’s rulers with all the hardships imposed on the population as a result of their leadership. Socialism emerged in Russia as a result of the stresses caused by this era of historic turbulence and became a defining principle in which Trotsky lived the majority of life by. His first experience with socialism began in 1896 when he travelled to Nikolayev for secondary education where during this time he lived with a family whose...

REED, PH.D., UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA, EMERITUS and UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA, RETIRED A Teacher’s Guide to the Signet Classic Edition of Booker T. Washington’s Up from Slavery 2 INTRODUCTION Booker T. Washington’s commanding presence and oratory deeply moved his contemporaries. His writings continue to influence readers today. Although Washington claimed his autobiography was “a simple, straightforward story, with no attempt at embellishment,” readers for nearly a century have found it richly rewarding. Today, Up From Slavery appeals to a wide audience from early adolescence through adulthood. More important, however, is the inspiration his story of hard work and positive goals gives to all readers. His life is an example providing hope to all. The complexity and contradictions of his life make his autobiography intellectually intriguing for advanced readers. To some he was known as the Sage of Tuskegee or the Black Moses. One of his prominent biographers, Louis R. Harlan, called him the “Wizard of the Tuskegee Machine.” Others acknowledged him to be a complicated person and public figure. Students of American social and political history have come to see that Washington lived a double life. Publicly he appeased the white establishment by remaining cautious in his charges and demands. Privately he worked tirelessly to undo...

Benjamin Franklin Research Paper

...It could strike humans directly and causes dangerous damages to their bodies or even causes deaths. Ravi and Kumar stated, “Humans or animals struck by lightning may suffer severe injuries or even death due to internal organ and nervous system damage. A lightning strike can cause death or various injuries to one or several persons”(35-40). But have we ever asked ourselves what is lightning? How people used to live before lightning rods were invented? How the invention of lightning rods impacts our society? Basically, lightning occurs when raindrops collides with each other in the air creating the electric charge. After that the entire cloud fills up with electrical charges, positive from the top and negative from the bottom of the cloud. Since opposite charges attract, that causes the positive charge to build on the ground under the cloud and then lightning...

An in depth definition and brief history of pastoral theology will be presented in order to provide clarification for the topic of this paper. Herbs Autobiography

...AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF HERBERT HENRY SCHMIDT This is an autobiography of Herb Schmidt as told to Rhonda Schmidt in July of 2011. Herb was 93 years old at the time and his memory of past events was crystal clear. November 24, 1917, I was born in West Alton, Missouri to George Schmidt and Mary Smith Stormer. I was the sixth of eight kids: Bertha, Bill, Frank, Charlie, George, me, Albert and Ed. It was so cold in 1917 that my Mom could not give me a bath for 9 days. [pic] (George & Mary Schmidt, Bertha, Charlie, Bill, Frank, Albert, Herb, George, Ed) [pic] (This photo taken in July of 2011. This is all that remains of the Schmidt Homeplace on Red School Road in West Alton, Missouri. Herb was 93 at the time this photo was taken.) I went to the Red School. I had to walk one mile to school. It was one big room and we had up to 35 kids with only one teacher. There were eight grades. Grades 1 thru 4 were taught every year, but grades 5, 6, 7, and 8 were taught every other year; like if 5th was taught this year then 6th would be taught the next year and the same with grades 7 and 8. The brighter kids helped the slower kids. Albert always needed help. I don’t think he graduated. I took an exam on Health and the teacher did not know how to record it because I got 100%. The year I graduated there were 4 kids who graduated from 8th grade. Because...

...LEVEL 5 LEADERSHIP THE TRIUMPH OF HUMILITY AND FIERCE RESOLVE What catapults a company from merely good to truly great? A five-year research good to truly great? A five-year research project searched for the answer to that question, and its discoveries ought to change the way we think about leadership. The most powerfully transformative executives possess a paradoxical mixture pf personal humility and professional will. They are timid and ferocious. shy and fearless. They are rare -- and unstoppable. In 1971, a seemingly ordinary man named Darwin E. Smith was named chief executive of Kimberly-Clark, a stodgy old paper company whose stock had fallen 36% behind the general market during the previous 20 years. Smith, the company's mild-mannered in-house lawyer, wasn't so sure the board had made the right choice -- a feeling that was reinforced when a Kimberly-Clark director pulled him aside and reminded him that he lacked some of the qualifications for the position. But CEO he was, and CEO he remained for 20 years. What a 20 years it was. In that period, Smith created a stunning transformation at Kimberly-Clark, turning it into the leading consumer paper products company in the world. Under his stewardship, the company beat its rivals Scott Paper and Procter & Gamble. And in doing so, Kimberly-Clark generated cumulative stock returns that were 4.1 times greater than those of the general market, outperforming venerable companies such as Hewlett-Packard, 3M, Coca-Cola,...

Level 5 Leadership

...» THE HIGH-PERFORMANCE ORGANIZATION BEST OF HBR 2001 If there's one management expert who is synonymous with the term "highperformance organization," it is Jim Collins, who has spent the past 20 years trying to understand how some companies are able to sustain superlative performance. It may seem surprising that of the seven factors Collins identified as essential to take a company from good to great, he chose to focus on leadership in this 2O01 piece. However, even a casual rereading of the article will convince you that he was right to do so. Collins argues that the key ingredient that allows a company to become great is having a Level 5 leader: an executive in whom genuine personal humility blends with intense professional will. To learn that such CEOs exist still comes as a pleasant shock. But while the idea may sound counterintuitive today, it was downright heretical when Collins first wrote about it-the corporate scandals in the United States hadn't broken out, and almost everyone believed that CEOs should be charismatic, larger-than-life figures. Collins was the first to blow that belief out of the water. Level 5 Leadership TheTriumph of Humility and Fierce Resolve by Jim Collins What catapults a company from merely good to truly great? Valliant Paper

...When I received a copy of James S. Valliant’s book, The Passion of Ayn Rand’s Critics: The Case Against the Brandens, I was a little apprehensive about reviewing it. It seems that every time a discussion commences about the “juicy” bits of Ayn Rand’s sexual and romantic entanglements, it takes on a life of its own, and the discussion never seems to end. Cyber-forums can’t even mention this book without provoking hundreds of rancorous posts among people who are still personally involved in the developments surrounding the break between Ayn Rand and Nathaniel Branden and Barbara Branden. It’s as if the War of ‘68 is still raging. I was fortunate when I came to the study of Ayn Rand. I was eight years old when Rand and the Brandens went their separate ways. I knew none of the principals involved, and didn’t actually discover Rand’s work until nearly ten years later—when I was a senior in high school in 1977. And even after I’d discovered her work, I'd read everything she wrote without the assistance of going to live lectures or attending group meetings of people sitting around a vinyl turntable or an audio-tape player, listening to recordings of said lectures. I eventually listened to the vast bulk of those lectures as background for the preparation of my book, Ayn Rand: The Russian Radical, but even that research was pursued independently. My work was not the product of any assistance from any Objectivist institute or organization. Around 1992, however, as I was researching my...
