Historical Background The Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) was created in 1969 and was originally called the Nurses Association of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (NAACOG). The Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses became an independent organization in 1993. The American Congress of Obstetricians is a professional organization of obstetrician-gynecologists consisting of approximately 58,000 members that was organized in 2010. The parent organization the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists was founded in 1951.
Commonalities between the Organizations Both of these organizations have many similarities in common. Both of these organizations are voluntary non-profit membership organizations. Both organizations provide medical personnel with professional tools needed to advocate for their patients and ensure their following best practices from lessons learned for patient care. Also these organizations act as a network for nurses to collaborate with colleagues, share educational resources, and assist with professional development opportunities. The cornerstone basis of both organizations is to promote the health of women, newborns, and to strengthen the nursing profession to improve patient care.
Differences between the Organizations These two organizations have a vast amount of similarities, but there are also a few differences in their organizational approaches. For the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) to become a member a candidate must become certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, an independent organization, and then nominated to the College by another member.
