Balletico, by Nigel Wood, was published in a book of 20 studies called ‘Sax Scorchers’ which was published in 2001. The book includes pieces with many different styles but Balletico’s style is a modern take on the waltz, with many expressive characteristics. Like a traditional waltz piece, it is in the time of ¾ and includes a lyrical melodies that rises and falls in pitch with the occasional chromatic phrase. However it is also quite an expressive piece, where you can experiment with techniques like rubato, phrasing and vibrato to put your own character into the piece. Wood has also written it to be ‘in an unhurried manner’ which can again help the musician show off their musicality but also puts a contemporary development from the waltz.
