...Two Case Studies from “The Life Span – Human Development for Helping Professionals” by Patricia C. Broderick and Pamela Blewitt July 12th, 2009 by David Kronemyer · No Comments The following two case studies are based on the book The Life Span – Human Development for Helping Professionals (2006, 2nd ed.) by Patriia C. Broderick and Pamela Blewitt. There also are occasional references to The Six Stages of Parenthood by Ellen Galinsky. Case Study # 1 – Chapter 4 – p. 142 Synopsis of the Case Study The case study illustrates the travails of teen pregnancy and its impact on family dynamics. It is eerily prescient of the recent contretemps involving Sarah Palin, the (former) governor of Alaska; her daughter Bristol; Bristol’s child, Tripp; and Tripp’s father, Levi Johnston. Teen pregnancy is a serious problem. A recent study shows that after improvement in the 1990s and early 2000s positive sexual behavioral change related to teen pregnancy has stalled or even reversed. Recent behavioral trends portend stagnant or even rising teen birth and pregnancy rates through 2008, Santelli, J., Lindberg, L., Dias, D. & Orr, M. (2009), “Changing Behavior Risk for Teen Pregnancy in the United States, 1991 – 2007.” J. Adolescent Health, 44(2), S44 – S49. Simultaneously Federal, state and local governments spend hundreds of millions of dollars on abstinence programs that require highly specific characteristics in order to contribute to the reduction of its incidence, Kirby, D. & Laris...

Identify the Stakeholders and obligations: * Kevin Lowe – a. Perform his job professionally and competently. b. Honestly report his hours as specified in work rules as a staff accountant. c. ...Food: From the Factory to Your Table By Alexander Nunez Let me paint you a picture… “In a local supermarket in Anywhere, USA, lies aisles of products waiting to be picked up and purchased by a mother to take home for tonight’s dinner. In this case, a whole chicken and vegetables for a veggie stir-fry. She then drives home to prepare the meal for her loving family. She washes it and begins to prepare it for cooking, cleaning it with vinegar, then salt, and covering it with plentiful of seasoning. After that, she grabs a pan and puts it onto the kitchen stove. The chicken is then placed onto a baking pan, covered with aluminum foil, and thrown into the oven, set to 500 degrees Fahrenheit. Once the pan was heated up, the vegetables were put into the pan, alongside a dosage of olive oil. Moving the pan back and forth, the vegetables were flying high in mid-air in a sizzling mist.” ***ONE HOUR LATER*** “After an hour of waiting, the scent of the chicken grew stronger every passing minute, as well as the stir fry sitting in the pan, still sizzling. The mother calls her kids to the dinner table. She takes the chicken out of the oven and rids the aluminum foil, revealing a golden brown chicken glistening in the light. The stir fry is taken out of the pan and is put on a large plate. Her husband arrives home from work, being greeted with hugs and kisses from his children. They might know about identity theft, viruses, Trojans and worms however what they fail to recognize is how these things are accomplished and if they have actually fallen victim to one of these horrible attacks. But what about attacks with even greater impacts…like someone hacking into the computer system of a car that controls the brakes? Perhaps penetrating the systems that control nuclear power plants? Although it seems unlikely that either of these extremely scary scenarios would ever happen, it is most definitely possible. One researcher for IBM’s Internet Security Systems told the owners of a nuclear power station that he could hack into their system through the Internet. The power station took this as a joke, responding to Scott Lunsford, the IBM researcher, with a laugh in his face saying that it was “impossible”. In response, Scott took up the power plant on their words and proved them wrong. In less than twenty-four hours, Scott’s team had infiltrated the system and in...

...All throughout time many people have been discriminated; from the Holocaust, to the Japanese Americans internment camps, to the segregation between African Americans and caucasians. America has never fully collaborated throughout time. Many have been treated differently, not only based on how they look but their gender as well. This is an issue that most are aware of but not to the full extent of seeing the true gory. In Octavia Butler’s Kindred and Jessica Viñas-Nelson’s ‘Post-Racial’ America”, they both encompass that gory through their thematic message; many people encounter mishaps such as discrimination due to their gender and race solely based on their identity and societal expectations. In Butler’s novel, Kindred, Dana travels back...

...Likhitha Reddy Professor Ervin Honors Special Topics: Films of Terry Gilliam May 6, 2103 Escape from Reality The modern world is plagued by the departure from an idealistic and imaginative state of mind into a realm of superficial social anxieties. Director Terry Gilliam, an American-born British director and member of the comedy group Monty Python, displays the theme of the rejection of pragmatism in favor of imagination in many of his movies. The theme of escaping from mundane reality into an alternative, inspired universe is most prevalent in his films Time Bandits (1981), The Fisher King (1991), and Tideland (2005). In Time Bandits, escape is more physical than mental as inspired pre-teen Kevin leaves his mundane life and consumerism-oriented world for a taste of adventure. The Fisher King presents a much different type of escape- Parry is a man who witnesses the murder of his wife and falls into a catatonic state only to emerge as a man who abandons his old life, including memory of his late wife, in order to find the “Holy Grail,” a worthless trophy that he sees in a magazine. Tideland is depicts another mental escape scenario and tells the story of the young daughter of two drug addicts in perpetual denial of her abused state who is aided in her fantasy world by doll heads that she wears on her fingers. Whether physical or mental, escape can provide a temporary panacea, but the problem with it is that one must always return. Time Bandits, released in 1981, was Gilliam’s...

...Summary This case, written by Bill George and Andrew McLean, discusses the company Amgen, a pharmaceutical company based out of Southern California. The company, under its CEO Kevin Sharer, was experiencing high growth, during 2005, and Kevin was looking at ways to keep his company growing into the future. Some of the things he was looking at was shifting the company from a science based pharmaceutical company to a marketing based one, what risks he would have to take to continue high growth, could his executive team keep up with company growth, and how would his leadership style have to adapt to continue growth. Most of all, he was thinking about who would succeed him as CEO. He had spent seven years understudying the previous CEO before taking the reins and he had to start to think about who would be capable enough to takeover for him and led the company into the future. Personal Takeaways - I enjoyed the quote from Kevin Sharer about MCI, “MCI was a highly political place where you had to be a good knife fighter, which I’m not.” I thought the quote was an interesting and maybe extreme take on office politics - I found it interesting that Kevin went to Amgen because he had no experience in the biotechnology field and he openly admitted that it took him his first five years on the job to really learn the technology that the company was producing. - I was impressed with Kevin’s commitment level to his job at Amgen. He had to completely change his ways in order to fit in...

...Chapters 1 & 2: Society History 1. The Worker is thorough, and concise in her writing of the report history. The client revealed a lot to the worker, and was quite willing to do so, which indicates some level of trust and comfort with the worker, regardless if the client was “flat”. 2. The Worker, in my opinion makes little if any assumptions, and any that are made are clear and backed up by a quote from the client or based on facts relayed by the client, and are reasonable in nature. All of her writings are as stated by the client or based on the client’s story. 3. Kate is depressed. She has lost interest in the things that previously used to give her pleasure. She has pulled away from friends, and the church choir, since the passing of her mother 2 years prior, stating not having the energy to add it to the list of things to do. Kate does not recognize the positives in the things she has endured and commanded in her life. It seems to me that she has always been wrapped up in her mom’s problems/life, all of her life, since the passing of her father, and as a result, she has forgotten about Kate! She no longer has her mom to worry about, and it is my opinion that she has lost a big part of who she was, and is depressed due to that as the root problem. 4. Kate has always had to take control or make decisions on behalf of her mother, from the young age of 6 years old, when at that time her father passed away. This has been her identity from this very young...

...Classic Airlines Marketing Solution Jeanine M. Taylor MKT 571 April 9, 2012 Michael Wilson, MBA Classic Airlines Marketing Solution Classic Airlines is the fifth largest airline in the world with a fleet of more than 375 jets that serve over 240 cities with over 2,300 daily flights. Since it was incepted 25 years ago, the airline has grown to 32,000 employees. Though currently profitable, Classic has not gone unscathed by the challenges faced by the airline industry. Financially, increased uncertainty about flying has resulted in a 10% decrease in Classic’s stock prices. Operationally, the airline is suffering from waning consumer confidence. The airline’s rewards program has lost 19% of its members and the flights booked by the remaining members have decreased 21%. Rising costs, particularly in the area of fuel and labor, have limited the airlines ability to compete for the high value frequent flier. Classic’s board of directors has mandated a 15% cost reduction in all departments over the next 18 months to protect the profitability of the company (University of Phoenix, 2012, Classic Airlines Scenario). Financial success is dependent upon marketing. Without marketing to generate the demand for a product, the company cannot make a profit (Koller & Keller, 2006). Classic’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Amanda Miller, has tasked the new Chief Marketing Officer (CMO), Kevin Boyle and his team comprised of the Senior Vice President of Customer Service, Renee Epson...

...Julie Thompson Dr. Rae Lynn Schwartz-DuPre Visual Rhetoric- Comm 430 March 11, 2015 Lion Embrace: A Critique of Anthropomorphic Animals “We humans seem to have admired Lions, and feared them and worshipped their nobility and strength for thousands of years” (Joubert, 2012, pg. 1). Nearly every human being has some sort of attraction to animals; whether it is their pet, a stuffed animal, or a fictional character. This human attraction to animals is common and natural, because it gives humans the satisfaction of interacting with another species in a playful manner. Kevin Richardson, otherwise known as “The Lion Whisperer” takes this human attraction to an entirely new level. Richardson is famous for rescuing and raising twenty-seven adopted lions from a game reserve in Johannesburg, South Africa. These lions were soon to be killed by hunters before Kevin Richardson stepped in and relocated these lions to his own land. He treats his felines as if they were equals, often wrestling, playing, and embracing them as if they were humans or as if he was a lion. For viewers these actions might be initially seen as incredible, witnessing a human interact so passionately with the King of the Jungle. Richardson states he is able to do this because he treats each individual lion differently, speaking to them, caressing them and, above all, treating them with respect (Roberts, 2007, p. 1). This relationship is a form of anthropomorphism, or giving animals human characteristics. The...

...joy. Your numerous years of hard work have paid off and you have been able to live a comfortable life in the suburbs of Ottawa, with plenty to eat and enough to entertain. Then one day, just as you’re getting back from work, as you’re pulling into your driveway, you find in utter horror, that your entire house is in ashes, smoke still drifting from the remaining pieces of wood. What despair and sadness! All that hard work would have gone down the drain since you would now have to start all over again in order to buy a new house. But then imagine not having to lose it all. Imagine having the option to call someone who can provide you with a large part of the money necessary to rebuild your house, as this was part of a financial agreement in case of such emergencies. What a relief! This is the essence of insurance. Insurance is a financial security that offers reimbursement for assessed risks that end up actually happening. In exchange for such coverage, the insured individual has to pay a regular premium. Though this reimbursement won’t bring back the individual’s burnt-down house or stolen car, it does offer options and choices with regards to dealing with the situation. It gives the individual peace of mind in knowing that should any danger arise, there will always be a way to overcome it. Without insurance, all loses sustained become unrecoverable, the owner loses it all, and has to replace it using more money from his or her own pocket. However, with insurance, this lose is...
