Diversity is an issue most companies are facing today in our ever-changing global economy. It is something that is typically seen throughout large corporations and is done to benefit the company and its employees. Some argue whether or not is beneficial and if it is being used properly. Unfortunately, I have not had much experience in the workforce working with people of different ethnic backgrounds. The greatest diversity I’ve had experience with would be working with African Americans. From my experience, or lack thereof, I personally believe diversity is beneficial to a company. I believe it forces individuals to learn about others beliefs and values, not just the American way. On the down side to diversity I believe some companies take advantage of diversity and only allow social interaction within the same realm. For example, when I worked for the Michigan Lottery Department, there were two regions that had African American Sales Representatives, the Detroit and Flint Region. These two regions were comprised of mostly African American customers. The State of Michigan has to meet a certain quota and all too frequently they often place their workers within the same demographics as their background. I can see this being a culture issue and being able to relate to individuals like themselves, but it does not help push the boundaries that we still face in today’s Nation of being divided. I believe that the State of Michigan is using the Access-and-Legitimacy Paradigm. I believe if the State of Michigan looked more closely at its employees and demographics and started shifting people out of their comfort zones, we could see a positive outcome. Not to say there wouldn’t be struggles, but ultimately I believe it would result in individuals being forced to become more open minded.
