This paper exemplifies the very beginning of my career as a high school writer, and through re-reading it and revising it, I was able to grasp how much I have changed. When I wrote this paper, I didn’t even know what passive voice was, let alone how to avoid it. Grammar mistakes, passive voice, and bias riddled by paper and I didn’t even realize it. Now, 8 months later, I don’t even have to worry about finding basic mistakes—passive voice—in my writing, because I know not to even write it to begin with. The first of my two papers that I chose to revise was the Poetry Essay. I knew that I earned a sub-par grade on this assignment, and I wanted the chance to prove myself. Quite frankly, when I re-read it, the grade that I earned had shocked me. Based on what I read, I thought it was like a C/C- paper at best, but somehow, I ended up with a B+ on it. My original paper had spelling issues, passive voice, and a heck of a lot of repetition. For example: “are focused”, “is caused”, “is represented”, etc. (30, 32-33, 40).
