...processing unit (GPU) capabilities in a single chip (die). APU-based platforms can deliver a prodigious amount of computational horsepower, and can present enormous opportunities in developing an application ecosystem beyond today’s mainstream computer systems. While APUs seek to deliver a superior, immersive PC experience, they also can provide tangible environmental benefits. By eliminating a chip to chip link and by introducing new holistic power management techniques, the APUs are designed to be more power efficient than current generation platforms that have both computational and graphical capabilities. This paper compares the environmental impact of one of AMD’s first APU products against an equivalent computer platform powered by the current generation of AMD processors (CPUs and GPUs). By conducting a business to consumer (B2C) lifecycle assessment, this study compares the total lifecycle greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (also known as a “carbon footprint”) of an APU system (based on the 18W dual-core processor codenamed “Zacate” and the M1 chipset codenamed “Hudson”) with the latest AMD system codenamed “Nile” (which is based on an AMD Athlon™ Neo II Dual Core processor, SB820 Southbridge, RS880M Northbridge with an ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 5430 discrete graphics card). This study concludes that the APU system offers significant GHG benefits (up to a 40% emissions reduction) when compared with the Nile platform. Introduction Climate change has become perhaps the...

Summary

...Section:12:30-01:45 Name: Yi Su This paper compared the difference between the Auditing Standard No.2 and the Auditing Standard No.5. The replacement of AS2 by AS5 creates a natural experiment: the new regulation changed the audit approach prescribed in AS2 but left largely unchanged the institutional context of public company audits, including the attendant auditor liability regime. An analysis of the impact of AS5 is informative on at least two counts. First, it sheds light on the economic impact of regulation resulting from a political crisis. Second, AS2 and AS5 both specify standards for audits of internal controls over financial reporting. Relative to AS2, AS5 prescribes a more flexible, top-down risk-based audit approach and encourages auditors to incorporate their professional judgments about audited risk of material misstatement, particularly fraud risk, in determining the extent of audit procedures. Using a sample of 3,023 U.S.-based Big Four accelerated filer auditors and measures of audited fraud risk as proxies for auditors’ fraud risk assessments, this paper investigated three research questions pertaining to the transition from AS2 to AS5. First, does the within-period association between audit fees and audited fraud risk increase after AS5? Second, are AS5 audit fees, on average, lower than AS2 benchmarks? Third, how does AS5 affect fees for higher-fraud-risk auditors? For first research question, this paper estimated separately, for each of three periods...

A Framework for Assessing Learning Outcomes in Online Business Simulations

...A Framework for Assessing Learning Outcomes in Online Business Simulations Like the last entry, this entry is also derived from a paper I wrote for my master's work in the Technology, Innovation, and Education program at Harvard's Graduate School of Education. My advisor on this project was noted knowledge networks researcher Barry Fishman, visiting Harvard from the University of Michigan. Harvard Business School Publishing is about to launch the first two products in our new series of online business simulations and I wanted to investigate how we can ensure that this product line produces effective learning for our customers. This paper explores a framework for assessing effectiveness in online business simulations. Introduction Problem Statement and Paper Structure Harvard Business School Publishing (HBSP) has created a new product line of online business simulations. We know from faculty customer surveys that they are highly concerned themselves with how easy the simulations are to use, administer, and debrief, and that they are equally concerned that their demanding, and increasingly technically-literate, students rate the learning experience as engaging and dynamic. Hence these eLearning products are designed to be engaging, interactive, usable and teachable. We also know from faculty surveys that these types of learning tools are considered to be very effective. But what does the literature say about these kinds of claims? How can HBS Publishing know...

Summative and Formative Assessments

...Assessment is defined as "The use of a variety of procedures to collect information about learning and instruction." (Johnson, 2013) It is a crucial part of instruction. In asking students to demonstrate what they have learned we are then able to evaluate if the educational goals and standards are being met. It can affect decisions about grades, instructional needs, curriculum, placement, advancement and in some cases even funding. It inspires three important questions. "Are we teaching what we think we are teaching?" "Are students learning what they are supposed to be learning?" "Is there a better way to teach the subject, thereby promoting better learning?" (Edutopia, n.d.) There are two basic assessment types, summative and formative. Each has a distinct purpose and answers certain questions about student learning. We will discuss these later in this treatise. It is the teachers' responsibility to interpret these assessments and utilize the data for meeting student need, tailoring the content of curriculum and lessons, and, of course, assessing student progress. Teachers must take an active responsibility for achieving a balance between assessments and content. Both summative and formative assessments contribute to the measurement of broader progress on assessment goals. Formative assessment is commonly known as "assessment for learning". It focuses on monitoring student response to and progress in instruction as well providing information to teachers about where...

Pay for Performance in Healthcare

...delivery. The continual increase of health care cost caused health care reform initiatives to control cost to focus on reimbursement models. Pay For Performance (P4P) is an increasingly popular initiative. The use of pay for performance has effects on the cost, quality, and efficiency of health care. This paper will discuss the effects the use of pay for performance has on patients, provider, and the evolution of health care delivery. Pay for Performance Pay for Performance plans were developed in the early 2000’s as a way to control costs. “Pay-for-Performance is a reimbursement plan that links payment to quality and efficiency as an incentive to improve the quality of health care and to reduce costs” (Shi & Singh, 2012, p. 586). Pay for performance is based on the belief that payment incentives will drive providers to deliver better care which will lead to disease prevention or early diagnosis. Pay for performance incentives give providers bonuses for meeting pre determined quality measures. The main quality measures used in P4P are patient experience, process, outcomes, and structure. Defining Pay for Performance Measures Patient experience refers to patients' assessment and satisfaction with the quality of care received, for example, wait time, communication and cleanliness of provider’s office. Process measures assess the performance of activities that contribute to positive health outcomes, for example whether or not aspirin was given to patients who suffered myocardial...

Intergrating Instructional Technology

...Lisa Horace Edu 225 November 18, 2012 Ronald Clutter Integrating Instructional Technology Technology integration is the combination of all technology parts, such as hardware and software, together with each subject related area of curriculum to enhance learning. ( Shelly,B.G, Gunter,A.G, Gunter, E. R., 2012) In the 21st century, technology is making a great impact on our educational system. It challenges our students to think outside the box and at the same time improve on reading, researching, problem solving, communications and critical thinking skills which are imperative to the success of the student’s future. That is why in my opinion, it is imperative that we integrate technology in the classrooms successfully. There are so many different technologies that can be used for many different things in the classroom to help enhance the learning experience such as smart boards, digital media, computers, dvd’s , tutorials, apps, and the web just to name a few. However, to integrate these tools into the curriculum successfully, so that the students can get the best experience possible, I need to be properly trained. “There is growing interest in the integration of technology into the classroom. A range of initiatives have been launched to develop in service teacher training process that will strengthen this integration.” (Guzman,A.; Nussbaum, M. 2009) “Billions of dollars have been spent to bring computer technology into k-16 classrooms, since 1999, congress has devoted...
