...MANUSCRIPT Hello everyone, my name is Nikolaj Bisgaard and I am an 18-year-old student from London. I have been invited to this conference to talk about riots. I want to talk about the reasons for the riots, which found place in London, and come with suggestions to prevent similar situations. The reason to the riots The reason to the riots in Tottenham were because of that an Afro-Caribbean man was killed by police, and the cops didn’t notify his family or provide a particularly convincing version of his death, but the riots in London had no link to the Tottenham riots, they just wanted to smash something and they just waited for an excuse. And they got their excuse, and they smashed a lot of buildings and stores. For underprivileged young people in Britain today, “there’s a sense of hopelessness,” says David Lammy, the M.P. from Tottenham, who was sounding the alarm about violent unrest months before the riots. “At the same time this happened in Tottenham, we got the best [school test] results that we’ve ever had. Those young people, they need to know that they can make it. The jobs need to be there. The prospect of going to university needs to be there.” I understand David Lammy, because the youngsters are forced to go to school, especially by their parents. And the young people want to know that it is good for the future and that it will help them get a good payed job. What can be done to prevent similar situations in the future? So what can be done to prevent similar...

...thrown into this world of big money, fast cars, and women. There were so many influences that affected the way they spent their cash. For example, these guys are thrown into this world as 18-21 year olds that many had never even cashed a check before. Before they even get that first check people are trying to take advantage of that, as agents and bad parents look out for their own interests. These agents take a big piece of the pie, and sometimes cycle money into personal investments without these young men knowing it. On the other hand, parents start taking money from these young men in order to pay off their mortgages and other debt that has piled up. Then the extended family and friends try to get a piece of the pie as well until, like Bernie Kosar, they end up paying for 5 mortgages or 25-50 people’s cellphones, etc. Besides the agents and parents that try to take money from these guys, there are women...

...Broadwater Farm riot From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The Broadwater Farm riot occurred around the Broadwater Farm area of Tottenham, North London, on 6 October 1985. The events of the day were dominated by two deaths. The first was that of Cynthia Jarrett, an African-Caribbean woman who died the previous day due to heart failure during a police search at her home. It was one of the main triggers of the riot in a context where tension between local black youth and the largely white Metropolitan Police was already high due to a combination of local issues and the aftermath of another riot which had occurred in the Brixton area of London the previous week following the shooting of a black woman (Dorothy 'Cherry' Groce) during another police search. The second death was that of PC Keith Blakelock, the first police officer since 1833 to be killed in a riot in Britain.[1] Contents * 1 Death of Cynthia Jarrett * 2 Day of disturbances * 3 Death of PC Blakelock * 4 Aftermath * 5 Trials * 6 Inquest * 7 See also * 8 References * 9 Bibliography Death of Cynthia Jarrett At 13:00 hrs on 5 October 1985 a young black man, Floyd Jarrett, was arrested by police, having been stopped in a vehicle with an allegedly suspicious car tax disc.[2] He was taken to nearby Tottenham police station and charged with theft and assault (he was later acquitted of both charges). Five and half-hours later, D.C. Randle and three other officers decided to search his...

...Ryan Stanley May 28th, 2015 Art History period 4 Music as Art Essay Hotel California – The Eagles Hotel California is a song created by the band, “The Eagles” in 1977. Members of the band include Don Fedler, Don Henley, and Glenn Frey. Don Henley is the lead vocalist on the original recording of the song and it ends with an extended section of electric guitar played by both Fedler and Frey. The meaning of the song has many different interpretations, such as a connection to Satanism, psychiatric hospitals, and cocaine addictions, while the members of the band claim that it is a depiction of their experience of “the high life” in Los Angeles. Through the lyrics, vocals, and music in the song Hotel California, it describes the excess of sex, drugs, money, food, and the luxurious life of the American Dream, which imprisons those trapped in the high life of the industry and becomes the undoing of many celebrities. The vocals in Hotel California are very dark and explain a life encompassed by drugs and other frivolous activities. In the beginning, the words of Hotel California explains a man who stays at a place called Hotel California, where he meets a woman who is more than a friend to him. As you analyze the lyrics further, it is apparent that the band uses certain literary devices that have clear connections to drug usage, which was common for music groups around the time. For example, a line from Hotel California says, “They stab it with their steely knives but they...

...Film Analysis: Bernie In the movie “Bernie”, we follow the story and between a Carthage, Texas funeral director Bernie Tiede, and his co-dependent relationship with a wealthy widow, Marjorie Nugent. As “Bernie” unfolds, we see the companionship turn for the worse as Ms. Nugent’s ill-temper causes Bernie to snap – and lands her dead in her freezer. This movie brings up some questions, specifically regarding image. After analysis, the question I keep coming back to is “Was Bernie genuine and sincere? Or was it all a façade?” Although Bernie committed a horrible crime, I believe the answer to this question is “yes”- Bernie was a genuine man. Throughout the movie we see Bernie come to be a pillar in the community of Carthage. He was an active member in the church, teaching Sunday school and signing in the choir. He donated his time to the local community college, helping with plays. He frequently bought random gifts for people. Even after Marjorie’s death and when Bernie had free range of Marjorie’s money, he donated it and spent it for the better good. He gave people money for college, continued buying gifts for others, and donated money for a new prayer wing for his church. The list of charitable things Bernie did for the community of Carthage goes on. There was almost no greed involved in any of the decisions that Bernie made. He kept his modest house and car, and the majority of the money he spent was on others. Although Bernie felt he had a reputation to uphold, I believe...
