1.1 Background of Study
Forest can be defined as a place which having a high density of trees, any area which is packed with tall and big vegetation are also considered as a forest. The trees in the forest are divided into two which are overstory or canopy, and the other one is the understory such as moss layer, moss layer and shrub layer. Generally, there are many types of forests such as Tropical Rainforests, Sub-tropical forest, Mediterranean Forests, Temperate Forests, Coniferous Forest, Montane Forests, and Plantation Forest. These type of forests are classified based on the…show more content… This system is based on the pre-selection of the trees to be cut and the trees life must be around 25-30 years. This system divides the forest into compartments and only one compartment is allowed to be log. This one compartment contains the trees with life of 25-30 years. The trees that allowed to log will be mark with tag close to the roots so that it will still be there after the cuts, and the other mark is on the trunk. The instructions of how to cut the trees are given to avoid from destroying small trees nearby and after the cuts, the compartments will close. New trees are planted and protect for 25-30 years from logging. The Collateral/Residual damages is the damages that caused unintended or accidentally. In logging process, it is impossible to keep the nearby small bushes and trees safe from the falls of the trees. The gigantic size of the trees is able to destroy a lot of small plants and trees. In order to build this Skid trail, the forest area along the proposed skid trail will be cleared and cut down. The skid trails are temporary, minimum or nonstructural pathways over forest soils. The dragging of the timber will remove the duff layer and disturb soil surface, and is potential to erode. Logging Road is the primary road which used by the vehicles to transfer all the harvested timber to factories or outside the forest. It is like a highway in the forest. This is different compared to Skid Trails. Logging Road used to carry the harvested timber on the lorry and transfer it to the manufacturer meanwhile the Skid trails used in order to drag the harvested timber to the place where all the timber is gathered. Log Yard is an open area where all the harvested timbers are gathered. After the timbers are cut down, they will bring the timber to the log yard. From the log yard, they will transfer it to the industries, manufacturer and more. A big area of forest is cleared to provide space for log yard.
