...Case Overview Steinhouse Knitting was founded in 1929. A family business, that specialized in the manufacture and sale of men’s sweater. The company produces three different brands: Steinhouse, Etcetera and Espana. The three brands do not differentiate on the basis of style, price, or fabrication. The company had been on St.Lawrence Street for 30 years. They built their own plant and moved, in May 1989, to Chabanel Street, in Montreal. Mission Steinhouse Knitting manufactures and sells high-quality men’s sweaters to satisfy their customers’ needs and wants. Objective 1. They want to stay in business and make profit. Symptoms 2. Men’s sweater is not as fashionable as they were. 3. The independent stores are quickly disappearing (losing customers). 4. Customers prefer well-known brands over the lesser-known brands such as Steinhouse. Situation Analysis Strengths 5. The sweaters are cut piece by piece as opposed to cutting in piles. 6. They take out the shrinkage. 7. All the yarn is NAFTA-approved. 8. They produce most of its sweaters to order (avoiding having too much overstock). Weakness 9. They don’t have an in-house designer. 10. The equipment and machinery in Steinhouse Knitting is different from what is available in Europe, so the products they make do not look exactly like the samples purchased. 11. They use a lot of acrylic to produce their sweaters, so customers perceive cheaper...

A used good can also simply mean it is no longer in the same condition as it was when it was first transferred to the current end user. Used goods may be transferred informally between friends and family for free as "hand-me-downs" or they may be sold for a fraction of their original price at garage sales. Used clothing sector has grown into an important economic factor. It has clear consumer benefits. This is especially true in countries with low purchasing power, and for poorer consumers though it seems that almost all socio-economic groups are choosing to buy used clothing. Affordability is the key reason why people buy these goods. Fashion and consumer preferences also seem to be shifting towards western-style clothing. Many believe that clothes that are second hand are dirty. While this can be true in rare occasions, many times second hand clothing comes from clean homes and clean people who wash the clothes before they redistribute...

...HBR CASE STUDY Offered a lucrative deal to outfit consumer goods with RFID tags,a technology executive wonders: Would he be providing a valuable custonner service? Or committing a heinous invasion of privacy? None of Our Business? by Roberta A. Fusaro E S W THEM the moment he came A out of the parking garage. Across the street, about two dozen protesters crowded close to the main entrance of the exposition center, heckling conference goers as they streamed inside. Fired up with anger and caffeine (almost all clutched steaming cups of coffee-it was still early on a Friday morning), they shouted through bullhorns and waved placards with messages like "Get Off My Frequency!" and "Mind Your Own Business!"When two women in charcoal-gray suits walked out the center's doors, a protester broke away and followed them down the sidewalk, trying to press pamphlets into their hands. A police officer ordered the crowd to stay behind the barricades, but his commands were inaudible beneath the sounds of traffic and civil insurrection. Dante Sorelia shook his head. "How the hell did we reach this point?" he thought as the walk light beckoned him forward. As CEO of a technology firm, Dante was an old hand at privacy debates. Such intense, public hostility, however, was a fairly recent development. His Manhattan-based company, Raydar Electronics, was among the top five makers and integrators of radio frequency identification (RFID) tags and readers in...

...Labor unrest in the RMG sector–reasons and remedies October 7, 2010 The prevailing worsening situation in readymade garment (RMG) sector is not good for country’s feeble economy. RMG sector accounts for 76% of our total annual foreign exchange earnings. Once, Jute was the only foreign exchange earning item. But the golden age of Jute is now over. At present, the RMG is our only dependable export item. The textile sector has emerged as a backward sector to this RMG sector. Spinning, weaving, Knitting; dying, finishing etc have emerged as a backward linkage industry. These areas of the of the textile sector are contributing to the economy of the country. So, if the RMG sector suffers any crisis, the repercussion will be felt everywhere in the rickety economy. Now, there are 350 spinning mills operating in the country, which is catering to the demand of the RMG sector and thus saving huge amount of foreign exchange. At present, the capacity of the spinning mills is 1.6 billion meters. There are 180 dying-finishing mills in the country with a capacity of 120 million meters per year. The production capacity of the knitting mills is 41 billion meters. What is important here is that they are capable of meeting local demand. The total workforce engaged in this sector is about 2.5 million, of which 60 percent is women. The total production is being exported to foreign countries. The reasons and the remedies of the present crisis: All of a sudden, labor unrest has increased in our country...

...DATA You May Not Need Big Data After All by Jeanne W. Ross, Cynthia M. Beath, and Anne Quaadgras FROM THE DECEMBER 2013 ISSUE C ompanies are investing like crazy in data scientists, data warehouses, and data analytics software. But many of them don’t have much to show for their efforts. It’s possible they never will. What’s the problem? To begin with, big data ARTWORK: CHAD HAGEN, GRAPHIC COMPOSITION NO. 2, 2009, DIGITAL has been hyped so heavily that companies are expecting it to deliver more value than it actually can. In addition, analytics-generated insights can be easy to replicate: A financial services company we studied built a model based on an analysis of big data that identified the best place to locate an ATM, only to learn that consultants had already built similar models for several other banks. Moreover, turning insights from data analytics into competitive advantage requires changes that businesses may be incapable of making. One retailer, for example, learned that it could increase profits substantially by extending the time items were on the floor before and after discounting. But implementing that change would have required a complete redesign of the supply chain, which the retailer was reluctant to undertake. The biggest reason that investments in big data fail to pay off, though, is that most companies don’t do a good job with the information they already have. They don’t know how to manage it, analyze it in ways that...

...Development of Apparel Industry in Bangladesh Garment Industry Large-scale production of readymade garments (RMG) in organised factories is a relatively new phenomenon in Bangladesh. Until early sixties, individual tailors made garments as per specifications provided by individual customers who supplied the fabrics. The domestic market for readymade garment, excepting children wears and men's knit underwear (genji) was virtually non-existent in Bangladesh until the sixties. Since the late 1970s, the RMG industry started developing in Bangladesh primarily as an export-oriented industry although, the domestic market for RMG has been increasing fast due to increase in personal disposable income and change in life style. The sector rapidly attained high importance in terms of employment, foreign exchange earnings and its contribution to GDP. In 1999, the industry employed directly more than 1.4 million workers, about 80% of whom were female. With the growth of RMG industry, linkage industries supplying fabrics, yarns, accessories, packaging materials, etc. have also expanded. In addition, demand for services like transportation, banking, shipping and insurance has increased. All these have created additional employment. The total indirect employment created by the RMG industry in Bangladesh is estimated to be some 200,000 workers. In addition to its economic contribution, the expansion of the RMG industry has caused noticeable social changes by bringing more than 1.12 million...

...1. For each type of retailor-supplier partnerships (quick response, continuous replenishment, VMI), discuss situations where that type would be preferred over the other two. Give real-world example of each partnership. Quick Response Strategy Here the purchase order is decided upon and prepared by the Customer As the name suggests, it is primarily aimed at reducing the order response time along with achieving greater accuracy in shipping the correct goods to the correct location in correct quantities. The above is achieved by using computerized equipment such as bar code readers, RFIDs etc. This also speeds up the overall operating expenses, discount situations, out of stock situations etc. Continuous Replenishment Here the inventory and everything related to the inventory is managed by the Vendor. The decisions are based on the levels which are decided on, on a prior basis. Here either the vendor continuously monitors a customer’s inventory, or a customer provides the vendor with all the current updated inventory data, to help him make timely shipments and maintain the customer’s inventory at agreed upon levels. Vendor-managed Inventory Here the inventory is managed and the purchase order is prepared solely by the Vendor without any external involvement of the customer. Here either the supplier monitors the customer’s inventory with his own employees or receives information from the customer about his stock levels. The vendor automatically refills the stock, without...

Starters Movers Flyers 100 hours of English approx. 175 hours of English approx. 250 hours of English approx. all ages but typically from age 7 all ages but typically from 8–11 all ages but typically ages 9–12 The exam experience For many young children, a Cambridge ESOL YLE Test may be their first experience of doing an exam. It is possibly the first time they have had to travel to a different venue to sit a test. They might be emotional and distracted by unfamiliar surroundings. In some cases, it is even a big day out together with a trip to the city on the bus or train. If we give our students lots of practice, they will feel confident about what is expected of them in the test, and what they will have to do. In addition to preparing for task types, these four practice tests utilise language – both grammatical structures and vocabulary – that is in the ESOL Flyers syllabus. This book consolidates the language with Flyers-style usage. As young learners need constant recycling of the language studied, there are some additional activities outlined below that can consolidate language from the course and help prepare for the tests. Many courses present and practise language topic by topic. Here students will find the themes and language...
