...The 400 Blows directed by François Truffaut changed many cinematic rules and planted the seed for new ones that are still being used today. This semi-autobiographical film played a large role in the beginning of the French New Wave. The most famous and still well used shot that came out of The 400 Blows was not used until the very end of the picture – the freeze-frame. This stylistic device was not used often at that time and it stuck in audience’s minds. The film itself follows the everyday life of a boy named Antoine. It’s not a particularly interesting life, but has its moments. He lives with his parents in a tiny apartment dealing with their oddities. His hurtful mom seems to only care about herself and his father appears to be a total fool. At school he is unfulfilled and everyone can tell. He can’t get away with anything in his attempts to make life a little less dull. For the majority of the film Antoine just plods along form one silly event to the next with his pal René. They skip school, go to see movies, and smoke. None of this is exception to watch or overly memorable. What is exceptional and memorable is how you viewed all this. Antoine travels throughout Paris, walking and sometimes almost jogging or running as if someone was pursuing him. His movement didn’t matter to me at the time until the end of the film when this now familiar trot is highlighted in his escape from reform school on route to the ocean. Even more memorable is how it appears on film. The camera...

...François Truffaut’s film The 400 Blows (or Les Quatre Cents Coups) falls under the category of art cinema; its style and form can be understood by way of an understanding of the conventions or anti-conventions of the art film model. Truffaut’s treatment of story, character, image, and space conform to the generally recognized set of characteristics that typify the genre. In the film the life of the protagonist, Antoine Doinel, accords with the filmmaker’s conscious attempt at creating a film that challenges commonly held notions of narrative, character, and style. As such, Les Quatre Cents Coups is a film in which the central character’s motives are ambiguous, narrative events are loosely connected, and degrees of closure are limited. These characteristics will later form the basic structure of the art film model and can be used to understand the film and art films, in general. An understanding of Les Quatre Cents Coups proves a difficult task without some understanding of the French New Wave, an influential film movement falling roughly between 1959 and 1964. During this era, directors such as: Godard, Chabrol, Truffaut, sought to produce films with a casual style and ambiguous but psychologically developed characters; these directors were opposed to studio filmmaking and the norms of “classical style” and story, which promoted narrative clarity and unity. According to James Monaco, the “aesthetic of the New Wave cinema was improvisational and its photography and editing were...

...The 400 Blows 1) Truffaut included the puppet show to show how Antoine and his friend are developing mentally. Their mind state is becoming more advanced and “mature” when it comes to stealing. They start to think things through instead of just going at it. The striking thing about that scene is that it shows the children enjoying the scene and having fun, while Antoine and his friend are in the corner plotting with evil thoughts, not enjoying the show. 2) One street scene that I found that interested me was at 24 minutes into the movie, after Antoine had left the carnival. While walking with his friend through the streets, he saw the once beautiful place of what was known as Paris (it’s still beautiful, just not as much as before), as well as his mother, while she was making out with a man who wasn’t her husband. Just this scene alone portrays that in the 1950s, Paris wasn’t the best place to be. Although it was pretty, it was also very busy and crowded on the streets. Anything could happen. 3) One scene I found visually stunning was the carnival scene where he was in the spinning ride. Although I may be wrong, but I feel as if the director included that scene to give an insight of how Antoine’s mind is and he's foreshadowing the rest of the film. The spinning of the ride refers to how Antoine is a confused kid just trying to get through. At one point of the ride, he is completely upside down. That is when his life turns for the worse when he’s sent off to boot camp/military...

...Matthew Santarsiero Film 101 3/8/12 The 400 Blows by François Truffaut The movie 400 Blows, a film that was created over 50 years ago is as modern and extraordinary as any film presently released today. It was made during the French New Wave timeframe which was a completely different style compared to many other films during that period of time and honestly was similar to most of the “Hollywood” movies that I am used to in this country. This new wave of films fundamentally surrounded itself by creating a feel of real life and personality on the screen that would captivate its viewers, and the movie 400 Blows did everything and more than I expected. This movie exclusively left out a realizable plot, but there is one thing that it did not do. It kept the life that Francois Truffaut was telling as real and as close to authentic as he possibly could. It was shot in first person singular which allows the viewer to imagine exactly what is going on inside the head of the protagonist, in this case Antoine Doinel. We as viewers, are able to follow the childhood of young Antoine as he constantly gets into trouble and ultimately how he deals with living with an uncaring and very difficult family in Paris during his adolescent years. It’s very easy to become captivated with the dialogue and acting within this picture because at certain points you feel the characters emotions and daily struggles as if they were your own. During the time of watching this movie I immediately felt...

Your other one will show someone who perhaps should have done nothing, or at least show that so far (because there case is not done) they have only hurt themselves and/or their family. Remember this is research, not your opinion. Personal opinions do not count in research papers, just facts. Some things to consider: 1. What is the obligation of an employee to his company versus society? 2. What might be the consequences of whistleblowing? 3. How might you avoid the mistake of an inappropriate allegation? 4. Are there any laws to protect whistleblowers? 5. Who do you go to, to blow the whistle? 6. Depending on the severity of what you’re going to whistle on, do you think your life and/or your families could be in danger? Can you find a documented case on this? 7. ...Coleman has had several stretches on the road that last three months or more. During a sales trip to Smalltown, Colorado in March 2008, Coleman found it necessary to wash his laundry. He also wanted to buy an anniversary present for his wife. Coleman went to the mall to buy the present. While at the mall, Coleman saw a ring that he really liked but could not afford. He decided to steal it. He then went to Jimmy’s Poor-Man’s Bar to meet with a client, John. Jimmy’s wasn’t a client of Coleman’s, but John didn’t like his customers to see him “doing business.” Coleman was talking with Jimmy about business when he spilled his drink all over the bar. That made him think about this cool trick where you put pure grain alcohol in your mouth, blow it out and light it. Coleman took a big drink, took out his lighter, and said, “What this!” He lit his lighter, blew the liquid and a fireball went through the room. The fireball hit Jimmy and killed him instantly. The bar also sustained a lot of damage. Software Inc. fired Coleman without even interviewing him to get his version of the events. Software Inc.’s handbook required all employees to be interviewed before termination. A week later, Coleman called John to make amends. When they met, Coleman said, "The company and I are so sorry about what happened. Let me take you out to dinner – Software Inc. will pay the bill." They went to a restaurant, and instantly got into an argument...

...Alexandra Small AP Language & Compositon The Catcher in the Rye and Impulse both have similarities between their narrators and characters. Impulse is a very powerful book with mature subject matters, but even so, it related very well to The Catcher in the Rye. The three characters in Impulse are all admitted into the Aspen Springs psychiatric hospital for all wanting to end their lives with different motives. Holden can relate to the three characters and mostly their lives before the psychiatric hospital. Through quotes, texts, songs and pictures The Catcher in the Rye and Impulse play out and compliment each other through similarities. In slide one, Tony and Holden are compared through their anger and outburst after losing a loved one. Tony, a character in Impulse was dating an older man named Philip. Philip became very sick and passed away. The only way for Tony to feel better was to turn to pills. He was hospitalized for trying to overdose and was put into the psychiatric hospital. Holden goes through a struggle when his brother Allie dies. When Allie died, Holden broke all the windows in his garage and had to be hospitalized. Holden ends up regretting this because he was still hospitalized during Allie’s funeral and couldn’t attend it. While Philip was alive he sent Tony a baseball glove and a ball for his birthday. This compares to The Catcher in the Rye because Allie had a baseball glove and he would write poems in green ink all over the glove...

...Work buy consume die Materialism is bad for you because you don’t appreciate the things you buy, like when someone buys an IPhone they like it to start whit but after some time they want a better one, because you not happy whit the one you have. That is when you can effort it; I think when you work hard to get the things you will appreciate it more, because then it is not just something you point at and buy it, you think of it maybe for 2 months and then buy it then you look more after you things. ‘’Studies show that poor people who emphasize materialistic goals are especially likely to be unhappy’’ that is also true; when you can’t afford the things you like you’ll get sad because you can’t have it, and that makes you sad, that’s like a child that can’t have an ice-cream. Nevertheless, I think it is only the poor people that is around friends and others whit an IPhone that thinks so much about it, when you see it all the time that is a constant reminder of that YOU HAVE TO GET IT. ‘’A husband and wife no longer connect. They are so exhausted from the pursuit of "nice things" - a big house, private school for the kids, fancy cars - that they are time-starved and depleted. Life is luxurious but unsatisfying and simply no fun.’’ Aline Zoldbrod said this and I thinks she is right, when life gets easy you don’t think about the little things and you get bored whit how easy it is, we have to have some kind of a challenge in life, there is a saying ‘’life is a game’’ and when life...

...An Analysis of Current Whistleblower Laws: Defending a More Flexible Approach to Reporting Requirements Gerard Sinzdak' INTRODUCTION Sherron Watkins is regarded as a hero for her decision to blow the whistle on the illegal activities of her employer Enron.' Had Enron survived the resulting scandal, however, the company could have fired or otherwise retaliated against Watkins with legal impunity.'^ Under Texas's whistleblower law, employees of private employers receive legal protection against retaliation only if they report wrongdoing to an external law enforcement agency. Because Watkins reported her concerns only to Enron CEO Kenneth Lay, her actions did not meet Texas's strict report recipient requirement.' The Texas whistleblower law is not unique. Most state whistleblower statutes restrict the parties to whom a whistleblower may report in order to receive protection from retaliation.^ The majority of states, for example, protect only those employees' who file reports with external govemment bodies. ...BLOW MOLDING Introduction Blow molding is defined as a plastic process whereby a thermoplastic material is heated to its forming temperature, which is below that of the plastic materials being used; at its melting point it is made to form a hollow tube called a parison or preform. This heated homogeneous plastic material is then placed between two female molds that are cooled through some medium. The two female molds close on the heated parison or preform and a gas, usually air, enters via an open end of the parison via a blow pin or needle; the gas is blown into the closed female mold halves, taking the shape of the internal female closed mold, allow to cool, and is then sent out through an exhaust. The two female molds are then separated and the cooled, shaped hollow part is then ejected or allowed to drop out for the cycle to repeat. In the first attempt over 100 years ago, to blow-mold hollow objects, two sheets of cellulose nitrate were clamped between two female mold halves. Steam injected between the sheets softened the material, sealed the edges, and expanded the heated sheets to form the inside shape of the two female mold halves. The high flammability of cellulose nitrate, however, limited the usefulness of this technique. In the early 1930s, more suitable materials, such as cellulose acetate and polystyrene (PS), were developed; these led to the introduction, by Plax Corp. and Owens-Illinois, of automated equipment based on glass-blowing techniques...
