One example of this is found in the song “All About that Bass” by Meghan Trainor. This song has actually caused quite a ruckus among feminists; one side believes the song promotes positive body image while other believe the lyrics are sexist (Bentel). The lyrics can tell us a lot about what the song is really communicating to listeners. Right away it is made clear that the “bass” being spoken of is in actuality a woman’s “booty”. You may be thinking “So what? There are thousands of songs about booties.” But the line that turns this song from “love your body” to “men love booties” is found in the pre-chorus where the author’s mother told her not to “worry about [her] size,” because “boys like a little more booty to hold at night”.
