Are Writer's Born or Made

...Are Writers Born or Made? The novel On writing A memoir of the Craft written by Stephen King gives rise to a great question. Are great authors born or made? According to Stephen King,” I don’t believe writers can be made, either by circumstance or self-will (although I did believe those things once” (King 18). The author is suggesting that a writer is born with the ability to be a good writer and it is through learned behaviors that these “talents are strengthened and sharpened.” (King 18). I feel King’s belief is very valid, many authors are born with a desire to write and with the determination and drive that it takes to become a great writer. Not all authors are in agreement with Stephen Kings perception on how an author is born not made. One in particular Dorthea Brande, the author of Becoming a Writer feels, “genius can be taught (once the secret emptiness of that phrase is understood) because in fact genius is as common as old shoes”. (Brande 12). This is quite an appealing idea and given Brande’s history and background I can understand some of her viewpoints on the matter. Brande (1893-1948) truly believes that a person has capability to take what little genius they are born with and transform it into the ability to become a great writer. The author puts a lot of emphasis on the idea that writes need to know what kind of habits impede the writing process. She describes “ways to help them develop healthy...

Are Leaders Born or Made@

...Some people believe that leaders are born naturally intelligent, visionary, charismatic and able to articulate a plan and rally their teams around it. Yet there are others who says that leaders are both born and made naturally intelligent and extroverted people, enhanced with education, training and experience. We often hear the proverb “Born to lead”, but it does not mean that leaders are born only but not made, because to be a leader you must first be a follower, true leaders do not walk in the front, they simply follow the rest. Nature may have some influence on who a person becomes. It is the upbringing of a person which either makes him leader or a follower. I think leaders are born as well as are made, because one may have the ability to lead but not the experience and skills to be a leader and skills develop through the life learning experiences. We have many examples of born leaders as well as made leaders. Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah, Martin Luther King were few of the leaders who make their way to be a leader through their dedication, hard work, experience, intelligence, qualities and skills. Then, there are some born leaders like Prophet Mohammad (P.B.U.H), Jesus, and Prophet Noah are few chosen leaders who lead people of their generation as well as still leading the generations of today. I think it all depends how one perceive about a leader, for me it does not matter that leader are made or born, what matters the most is how leaders...

Are Leaders Born or Made

...| “Are Good Leaders born, or can they be Made” | For decades researchers have been trying to find the answer to the question “Are good Leaders born, or can they be made?” However it is my belief that, it is a little of both, Leaders are naturally born and they can be made. Firstly, let us define who is a leader, Peter Guy Northouse – (2009) postulates that “a leader is any person who guides others towards a common goal, showing the way by example, thus creating an environment in which other team members feel actively involved in the entire process of goal achievement. A leader is not the boss of the team but instead, he/she is that person who is committed to carrying out the mission of the venture. He further defines leadership as” a process of social influence in which one person can enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a common task” which in short would mean working through others to achieve goals or objectives . With these definitions, it would be safe to say that anyone whose accomplishment necessitates the sustenance of others can be a leader. The same is true of many who are presently working with and through others to achieve a common objective that they are indeed leaders, whether they consider themselves to be eccentric or catastrophic leaders. Mahatma Gandhi once said that, “We must live the change we want to see”. This quote brings new meaning as it embraces the fact that we are leaders of any change in our lives, therefore logically...

Managers Born or Made?

...The key to a successful organization is said to lie within a good manager. It is in fact the effectiveness of this manager and the qualities that they possess that are vital to the development and preservation of an efficient management system within a corporation. The question remains however, as to whether or not these good managers are born, if they possess qualities that will mould them into exceptional managers. Or are they made? Is it possible to develop and acquire the necessary skills to become the good manager a successful organization needs? It is of importance that we define what a manager is before taking any steps further. According to Tripathi, (2008, p.2) “a manager is one who contributes to the organization's goals indirectly by directing the efforts of others-not by performing the task himself”. Leadership and management are closely interrelated because if you are a manager of an organization, you are in essence the most important leader (Kouzes & Posner 2010, p.338). The most obvious distinction between a leader and a manager lies within what ‘leadership’ refers to. Leadership does not refer to a position at the top of an organization and just because a manager holds that specific position, it does not mean they are leading. Leaders have willing followers where their right to lead is earned from those followers through their influence. They intend to make change using their personal power and cannot use coercion but instead inspire with their vision (Huth...

Leaders: Born and Made

...Born and Made (Gentry, Deal, Stawiski, & Ruderman, 2012) (Gentry, Deal, Stawiski, & Ruderman, 2012) Leaders: Born and Made Joseph Eric Williams Saint Leo University Leaders: Made or Born Vince Lombardi once stated, “Leaders are made, they are not born. They are made by hard effort, which all of us must pay to achieve any goal that is worthwhile.” For centuries, this has been a debate one that continues into society today. There are many opinions on this topic, but one thing is certain; all leaders are born, effective leaders are made. Every leader must be born with certain characteristics that distinguish them above their peers. One such characteristic is intelligence. Effective leaders aren't necessarily the smartest people, but they have to be smart enough to do the job they're assigned. Another trait is the ability to motivate others and themselves to achieve results, and to make decisions. These essential traits, ones that any leader must possess, are the foundation for the making of an effective leader. Not a single leader was ever born with all the necessary skills to be an effective leader. Leadership is an apprentice trade, and most leaders learn more than 80% on the job. To become effective leaders must do one important thing; take responsibility and seek self-improvement. The most successful leaders seek out training that provides them an opportunity to expand their leadership abilities. Goldsmith and Morgan studied the progress...

Entrepreneurs Are Made Not Born

...Entrepreneurs are made not born /essay/ This is a very old question with a lot of pros and cons, with a lot of defenders and opponents. Are your inner qualities everything that you need in life in order to success? I think that it is not enough. Being honest I believe that qualities like creativity, passion and ingenuity, one of the most important entrepreneurial characteristics, are partly inborn but without developing your inhesions every single day you would not be a successful entrepreneur. It reminds me of Jeff Bezos graduation speech at Princeton University -“Would you be proud of your gifts”. The idea is that you need to improve yourself since you are child. In addition I would like to say that I have never seen baby entrepreneur, so probably your inborn qualities are not enough. To believe that everything you need in life is born qualities is wrong. If you are satisfied with your inborn qualities and believe in this theory you won’t do anything in order to improve yourself and that would be detrimental. Are entrepreneurs just a special bread or they become this way through education? It is a myth that someone is a born entrepreneur. Entrepreneurs can be thought and more important-they should be. How important is a diploma for your future entrepreneurial success? I think a lot. An education in a prestigious college or university is necessary to gain you skills and knowledge that would be very necessary in your future business life. I believe that basic knowledge of...

Are Leaders Born or Made?

...Are Leaders Born or Made? Leadership-Mgmt Abstract Being a leader is something that at times can be very difficult to identify simply by definition. Not only does the term carry with it a great deal of meaning but it also has powerful implications that immediately come to mind. Among these are the positive traits required to be a leader. The Academy of Management Executive stated that Key leader traits include: drive (a broad term which includes achievement, motivation, ambition, energy, tenacity, and initiative); leadership motivation (the desire to lead but not to seek power as an end in itself); honesty and integrity; self-confidence (which is associated with emotional stability); cognitive ability; and knowledge of the business. (Lock, 1991) The point here is that being a leader can not be simply assigned, as to effectively function as a leader one must possess many or all of these required traits. What interests me is the question of whether or not people are actually born leaders, or is it simply a book that people read and learn on their own. The purpose of my research paper is to better understand this question. Are the best leaders born or taught? It’s quite possible that all of the skills of a leader are naturally ingrained into an individual thought process. An example that could relate to this might be a child that learns to play an instrument by ear rather than being taught. From my earliest memories as a child in pre-school and into kindergarten...

Entrepreneurs Are Born and Not Made?

...Entrepreneurs are born and not made An entrepreneur is ‘a person who has possession of a new enterprise, venture or idea and assumes significant accountability for the inherent risks and the outcome.’ So are entrepreneurs born? Or made? There have been many debates from businessmen to academics alike on whether entrepreneurs are born or made, but is it as straight forward as that? In this essay I will evaluate arguments both for and against this statement and conclude it with my own personal observation. The argument for this statement that entrepreneurs are born is a scientific one, with the questions being are there specific entrepreneurial genes and/or chromosomes. Some of the characteristics credited to entrepreneurs include extroversion, risk taker, persistence, independent, innovative, opportunistic and the need for achievement. These skills are the reason many believe they are from nature as they go above and beyond those of an ordinary office manager. Many believe that these are skills are innate in a person, that they are born with them and they are skills and characteristics that cannot be taught. (Scott Shane, wall street journal) ‘40 percent of the variation in the tendency to be an entrepreneur is inherited.’ Some people say that not anyone can become an entrepreneur; they have to have the right innate qualities from birth alongside the external influences for their talents to be recognized in business. “If the environment is not conducive then entrepreneurial talent...

...leadership training and development courses, as leaders are born, not made.' Analyse this claim with reference to different theories of leadership. Introduction What is a leader? It is impossible to obtain a single definition. But it happened when achieving an objective and when more than one people are needed to do it. Nowadays, there are many leadership training and development courses that train people to be the position of leaders. Companies send their staff to these courses in order to increase the organizational effectiveness. However, some people argue that these courses are useless. It is because they believed that leaders are born, but not made. This essay will analyse this claim by using different leadership theories as well as discussing the impact on leadership development courses, in order to identify whether leaders are born or are made. Leaders are born There are many successful leaders who demonstrated their skills at an early age. They have natural talents that make them to be 'natural leaders'. He is able to adapt to situational changes. There has been a debate for years about what makes a great leader. This debate is at times summarized into two schools of thought. Trait Theories: Similar in some ways to "Great Man" theories, trait theories assume that people inherit certain qualities and traits that make them better suited to leadership. Trait theories often identify particular personality or behavioral characteristics shared by leaders. Behavioral Theories; this theory believes that great leaders are not born but are made. The prime focus of this theory is on actions of leaders. The focus is not on internal states or mental qualities. Are Leaders Born or Made

...Q. According to Bennis, ‘the most dangerous leadership myth is that leaders are born – that there is a genetic factor to leadership. This myth asserts that people simple either have certain charismatic qualities or not. That’s nonsense; in fact, the opposite is true. Leaders are made rather than born.’ Do you agree or disagree? Provide reasons for your opinion. The world’s top companies share a common understanding that strong, effective leadership is essential in their success as an organization (“Leaders Are Made,” 2008). The performance of a company often rides on the many decisions the higher management or company leaders make. Company leaders, for example the chief executive officer, make crucial decisions that determines the direction the company is heading towards, whether resulting in its success or towards its demise. Hence strong leadership is often seen as a key, highly sought after asset in many corporations. Likewise, in ancient times, people have been in awe and in fear of certain great leaders. One good example would be Alexander the Great. He was the most celebrated member in his dynasty and created one of the largest empires in ancient history. Armed with a brilliant mind, he was undefeated in battle with his usage of superior tactics. Indeed, he was one of the most feared and respected leaders in history. The basic principles of leadership have been until recent times, discussed by many, but received no formal agreement on definition (Radman, 2007)....
