...the effects of the tax. Including the relationship between the industry and demand and price, and who will actually pay the tax in the end. The view of this paper is through the eyes of a brand new economist (my self); which is to say that is lacking any profound breakthroughs in economics. It is, however, the issue as I see it, sprinkled with a little humor. Enjoy. The Botax The primal instinct to procreate is in all forms of life. We project our best attributes forward in the hopes that someone might recognize those attributes as necessary in their offspring. We have created a monster. Today a lie is just as good as the truth. To those that can afford it, they can look like what ever they want. Hell, there is a guy in the mid west that is making him self look like a lizard! Medical science can wipe the acne off your face, give you twenty-twenty vision in twenty minuets, and grant instant confidence to the insecure through a vast variety of surgical procedures. This has caught the eye of various state legislatures, and they want in on the action. These states are hurting as it stands with budget deficits, and are looking for new ways to make some money. One such idea is the so-called “vanity tax”. Here are the details. It puts a tax on cosmetic surgery and Botox injections with various compassionate exceptions such as burn victims and mastectomies for breast cancer patients. Around six percent on top of each nose...

...Week 7-POS/110 American National Government Assignment Bureaucracy and You By Timothy R Cole Throughout our daily lives there are so many different bureaucrats that run our days it is completely amazing. I believe the one branch of bureaucrats that amazed me the most was the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). I never realized how much these individuals actually do within my daily life whenever it comes to inspecting, approving, or running some facet of our lives. The agency which surprises me the least would be the Bureau of Tobacco, Alcohol, and Firearms as their entire purpose is to collect taxes whenever these items are sold. So when and why was the FDA formed? Was it in response to some national emergency or event? The “FDA is a branch of government housed within the department of Health and Human Services” (FDA,2010). The onset of the FDA was in direct correlation with the instituting of the Federal Food and Drug Act in 1906. The history of the FDA however can be traced all the way back to the latter part of the 19th Century under the US department of Agricultural Chemistry. Under the direction of chief chemist Harvey Washington Wiley in 1883 this branch of government began to investigate the adulteration and misbranding of food and drugs within the American government. (FDA, 2010) I do believe this was in direct response to an emergency as such drugs as cocaine, opium and heroin were consistently being added to medicinal elixirs and...

...Emotions Paper The presence of emotion on human lives is a combination of many events, from our natural biological constructs, to our environment and how that aided our development. Emotions play a pivotal role as to how we act towards motivation. Two intrinsically different historical theories arise which illustrate polar views on the source of human emotion. One being James-Lange’s theory where physiological symptoms trigger emotional response, and the second being Cannon’s theory where both physiological and emotional response occur at the same time. Two research methods include word association, how language can label human emotions, and evolutionary theory that is based on the idea that emotions aided early human survival. Finally Darwin had a structural facial component known as facial feedback hypothesis, wherein an event-appraisal-emotional sequence was formulated. All these theories play a major role in human emotion being the driving force behind motivation. Emotion is an important aspect of motivation because it is the source of action when the environment acts as an incentive (Davidson, Jackson, & Kalin, 2000). The historic background of arousal and motivation includes the James-Lange theory of emotion and the Cannon theory. James proposed that physiological symptoms occur directly before a stimulating event or emotional experience (Davidson, Jackson, & Kalin, 2000). Specifically, the physiologic response is the reason for the emotional event...

...Huntington's: The Anticipation that Kills After doing research on the effects of the disorder Huntington’s disease, it is easy to understand what a disease like Huntington’s will do to an individual way of life. Imagine being thirty years old with a good job, a loving spouse, maybe a couple of kids and an all-around pretty good life. Then imagine one day your boss writes you up and sends you home because he/she suspects you of being intoxicated. A person in this situation could, in months and years to come, learn from a simple blood test that he/she is the victim of a genetic disorder called Huntington’s disease. The ramifications of this illness are endless and affect not only the individual with the disorder but entire families and communities as well. At this time there is no cure or even any significantly effective treatment. However, as with many genetic disorders, research is being done in in this day in age that may promise to one day lead us to such treatment or cure. Huntington’s disease is a neurodegenerative or genetic disorder that affects muscle coordination and some cognitive functions, typically becoming noticeable in middle age. It is much more common in people of Western Europe descent than in those from Asia or Africa. The disease is caused by dominant mutation on either of the two copies of a specific gene, located on chromosome 4. The Huntington gene normally provides the genetic code for a protein that is also called Huntingtin. The mutation of the Huntingtin...

...Personality and Individual Differences 43 (2007) 2105–2115 www.elsevier.com/locate/paid Narcissism, vanity, personality and mating effort Vincent Egan *, Cara McCorkindale Department of Psychology, Glasgow Caledonian University, Cowcaddens Road, Glasgow G4 0BA, Scotland, United Kingdom Received 10 November 2006; received in revised form 19 June 2007; accepted 27 June 2007 Available online 15 August 2007 Abstract The current study examined the relationship between narcissism and vanity, and the degree these are predicted by the ‘Big Five’ personality traits and mating effort (ME) using a sample of 103 females recruited from a large beauty salon. Narcissism correlated with vanity at 0.72 (P < 0.001), and was associated positively with extraversion (E), ME and the subscales of vanity; narcissism was associated negatively with neuroticism (N) and agreeableness (A). Vanity correlated positively with E, conscientiousness, both subscales of narcissism, and ME, and negatively with N and A. A composite narcissism–vanity score was produced using principal components analysis, and used along with scores from the NEO-FFI-R to predict mating effort. The narcissism–vanity composite, low A and E significantly and independently predicted mating effort (adjusted R2 = 0.28, F(9.96) = 7.74, P < 0.001). These results show that mating effort is additionally predicted by narcissism as well as self-reported personality. Ó 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. Keywords: Narcissism; Personality;...

...discounted meals. The United States Census Bureau has estimated that the population of those over 65 will increase from 11.4 percent in 2000 to 20.7 percent in 2050. The baby boom generation, those born in the 1950’s will make up sixteen percent of the population in at least ten states by 2020. Some say that by the end of the twenty-first century life expectancy will exceed 100 years of age. Most people want to live a long life, but only if they are mentally and physically able to thrive. Americans in particular want to be young and live forever because our society tells us there is no place for the old. The media and family reiterate to younger generations that getting old is depressing, sad and lonely. The obsession with face-lifts, Botox and liposuction increases the stigma that getting old is close to the end. If older citizens are unable to care for themselves they...

The brand name not only helps to identify a product but also its producer or manufacturer. A brand also helps in delivering of the message clearly and confirms the credibility of any business entity. Brand name is also indicator of the characteristics of the product. Branding could be defined as a ‘promise delivered’ and to be successful a business entity must be able to deliver that promise every single time. For branding most of the business entities come up with a short statement that describes the purpose of your brand. The branding strategies help in launching a product in the market and in creating a brand that will expand and mature in a saturated market place. To make effective...

...Is Fifty the New “Over-the-Hill” for Marketing Professionals? Rejoining the “Corporate Band” after a Successful Solo Career Author’s note: After a couple of months of seeking re-entry into the workforce, I determined that those employers looking to fill traditional marketing, advertising and media sales positions seem disinterested in a “seasoned” professional. Are you someone who has faced a similar experience? Perhaps you are a hiring manager who disregards qualified but older candidates when sifting through resumes. If you fall into either of these categories, then this article is for you. If you are an individual of a certain age, then the names Don Henley, Sting, David Lee Roth and Stevie Nicks will mean more to your than just “outstanding solo recording artist”. You will know that at one time, these stars were part of some incredible bands. You will also know that these superstars, despite experiencing massive successes with solo careers, have all opted to regroup, so to speak, hooking up with former band-mates to recreate music magic that is as worthy and sellable today as it was back in its heyday. Yes, EDM, hip-hop, rap and auto-tuned pop dominate the airwaves and I-Tunes playlists, and these genres generate massive record sales and concert and radio advertising revenues. But thanks to video games like Rock Band and Guitar Hero, plus a generation of parents who drove their kids to school and selected the in-car musical entertainment, boomer-parented children...

...Media Effects of Women’s Body Image This paper aimed at to help 15-30 years old women to build a healthy and positive attitude toward their body image. The research question that I raised is how do TV advertisements and fashion magazine affect 15-30 years old women to build their self-esteem and body image view in the U.S.? More specifically, I will examine the various aspects of negative effects that the television and fashion magazines bring to the 15-30 years old women. I proposed that the negative effects that television and fashion magazines bring to young women is more serious than people expected. I do intend to cite the relatively few statistic data and clinical studies that have been conducted on media’s negative effects on women’s body image. My audience will be the 15-30 years old women who do not aware enough of the problem that I describe or who was struggled by the problem that I describe for a long time. Nowadays, a woman’s identity is linked strongly to her physical appearance. In this situation, coverage of women in media mostly concerns women’s appearance and set them as sexual objects. Most social commentators agree that the media reflects current social norms (Grogan, 1999). Body image is the picture of the size, shape, and form of people’s bodies that people see in their mind’s eye (Honigman & Castle, 2007). It is also central to the self-concept and to self-esteem, influencing psychological functions and diverse behaviors (Cash & Pruzinsky...

This influence may be especially important in the hospitality and tourism industry, whose intangible products are difficult to evaluate prior to their consumption. When WOM becomes digital, the largescale, anonymous, ephemeral nature of the Internet induces new ways of capturing, analyzing, interpreting, and managing online WOM. This paper describes online interpersonal influence, or eWOM, as a potentially cost-effective means for marketing hospitality and tourism, and discusses some of the nascent technological and ethical issues facing marketers as they seek to harness emerging eWOM technologies.
