For my attended speech critique, I attended Tearing Hatred from the Sky. On February 23,2017, a speaker by the name of Bree Newsome came to speak at the College of Charleston at Sotille theater. Bree Newsome or Brittany Ann Newsome is an American filmmaker, musician, speaker, and activist from Charlotte, North Carolina. She is best known for her act of civil disobedience on June 27, 2015, when she was arrested for removing the Confederate flag from the South Carolina state house grounds. The young woman arrested in 2015 for taking down the Statehouse's Confederate battle flag has been invited to speak at the college about activism and social justice, but opposition to the event was the South Carolina Secessionist Party. Her transitions were easy to follow in which she used a story to transition to the next topic. Her thesis statement was transparent, “quit being a bystander and create a new image, a new symbol and a new consciousness of the power inherent in direct action “. For her introduction, she formally introduced her herself to anyone who did not know her and then went on to explain her motives for taking down the flag. For each reason she had to take down the flag, she used an event in history to support her logic. For her conclusion, she did a call to action. She kept her information factual and from reliable sources. To convey her message in an ethical responsible way she used events from history such as civil rights trials, mistreatment of people of various sexual orientations, and victims of police brutality to support her statements. She portrayed these events on a timeline PowerPoint presentation. The PowerPoint gave the audience a direct insight to the imagery she was giving in her speech. It is one thing to her about something happening, but it takes it to another level to actually visually see what is going on. For that reason, I feel that the PowerPoint helped strengthen the message she was
