Unit 5 Report In this scenario Maria utilizes the rhythm method as her preferred method of birth control. Some pros of the rhythm method is there is no prescription so it is something that couples always have access to. Another pro is it is natural, therefore a person doesn’t have to take hormones. A con is that the lifespan of sperm may make it nearly impossible to exactly know when it’s safe to have sex. Another con is that a woman’s menstrual cycle is different and may change so it would be rather difficult to know when a woman is fertile. Last is the risk of STD’S, the rhythm method does not provide any protection. Maria should be twelve weeks into her pregnancy because she has missed two consecutive periods. On average, woman get their period every four weeks, so eight weeks later without her period plus you cannot find out you are pregnant until four weeks after. To put in perspective, conception does not even occur until two weeks after pregnancy, therefore Maria is twelve weeks into her pregnancy and she conceived about ten weeks ago. The follicular phase is where follicles in the ovary mature. The main hormone controlling this stage is estradiol. Follicle- stimulating hormone is highest and the most important hormone during the first week of the follicular phase. Luteinizing hormone is also present in this phase and most high by day seven of the cycle. The second phase of the menstrual cycle is ovulation and what happens is a mature ovarian follicle ruptures and discharges an ovum. The last phase in this process is the luteal phase.
