Plyler v. Doe
The Supreme Court case of Plyler v. Doe in 1982 was the argument between a Texan Superintendent of the Tyler Independent School District and the Supreme Court dealing with one of the illegal immigration issues in Texas with considering its bordering location to Mexico. The issue was whether or not the Fourteenth Amendment protected illegal aliens and their children to have school funding provided for them, or if they were not considered to be the implied people whose rights were protected under this clause.
Plyler's case was about how the state should not fund schooling for illegal immigrant children. Especially since they most likely do not contribute their money for state taxes like other legal Americans which, in return, help fund the school system. Therefore, the school district was trying to charge the undocumented immigrants an annual $1,000 fee for tuition in order to compensate for the lost state funding. One of the arguments supporting this idea was how easily people can cross the Mexican border, and how they are drawn towards the idea of free education. This would be due to the fact that their parents would've brought them here, and they would not have control over their situation. Another point they brought up was that if they did not fund the immigrant children for schooling, then we would perpetuate illiterate humans living within our borders. For me, this concept is something that I support in full because a better education ultimately lead these children to being successful members in our society and therefore would be viewed less of a burden on legal American citizens, and more of a
