Unit 1: Individual Project – Marketing a Company to another Country The company I chose is Comcast Communications. The services offered by this company are digital cable services and broadband. Comcast is the nation’s largest cable operator. This status stems from the acquisition of AT&T Broadband. The company is expanding in other areas like voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) telephony which it plans to add to their services. Adding this service will strengthen there market in the telecommunications area. The country of Malaysia has been of some interest to me in the past. The government is a federal parliamentary democracy that has a constitutional monarch. The ruler or the king is elected for five year terms chosen from among the sultans of the Malaysian states. They have more registered political parties I believe than our country over 15. Elections are held to elect the Prime Minister and the members of the lower house of parliament. Also, they have a bicameral parliament and the prime minister heads the lower house. The government is based on English law and there are three branches of government. The branches are executive, legislative, and judicial. The economy is consistent and it is continuing to grow at a very good pace. The people are educated and devoted to the well being of the country. The political risk for this country is low. Transition of power is usually without incident. Currently, they are experiencing good trade relations with the United States, Japan, Singapore, and other countries. Exports consist of electronics, petroleum, apparel, natural rubber, and a few other products like timber. Malaysia is open to foreign investors and relies on imports like machinery, manufactured goods, and lubricants. An evaluation of the political and legal systems shows that it is in working order. There are many political parties that work to increase the number of seats in the house. There are 219 members in the lower house. The legal system is derived from English common law. Having three branches of government provides a way of having checks and balances. This also gives the government the ability to be actively involved in the country’s economic development. A policy called New Economic Policy (NEP) was established in 1971 and it was a plan to get rid of poverty. When this policy expired in 1991, a new policy was created called National Vision Policy. This is another ten year plan aimed at education and the economy. For Malaysia, the legal system along with the political is good and effective; however, the impartiality is hard to say since the political parties have their own agendas. This country is a potential market for Comcast Communications and other companies. The political and legal conditions are design to stimulate the economy by providing work, education; housing, etc. for the citizens of this country. The standards that are in place by all the government officials and politicians are providing a good environment and an atmosphere which invites international participation in the country’s economic growth. The evaluation of the conditions is positive and the working of the political and legal systems continue to reward the country signifying the good work that is being done. Malaysia is a country that works diligently on the quality of life and one way this is done is economic growth. Because Malaysia has welcomed foreign investors and companies from countries that have maintained good relations, it would be beneficial if Comcast Communications would tap into the communication market. The current communication system which includes broadcasting which is one television station, telephone, and telegraph is up to date for the area. Even though their system is considered very modern, a company like Comcast Communication can bring it to state of the art. There are a large number of internet users that is growing steadily. Malaysia could use a company that could develop a better broadcasting system and better internet service. Comcast Communications is a company that has the latest technology for cable service, broadband and the voice over Internet Protocol. This company is steady challenging itself to be number one in their market and continue to grow and develop to do this. The company and the country seem to have a similar drive to be on top of their game. Comcast Communication providing services in Malaysia would be a good venture and a winning proposition for both parties.
