...Brawl in Mickey's Backyard Brian Caywood BUS250: Corporate and Social Responsibility Instructor: Jodi Feikema July 13, 2015 This is a story that weighed the needs of the community against the largest business to see which was deemed more important people or money. SunCal and Disney put themselves into a challenging situation in trying to settle a dispute over land that was available near Disney’s park in Anaheim, California. SunCal wanted to build affordable housing for the local populace. The Disney Corporation also wanted the same land so that it may utilize it in case of future expansion; Disney also claimed that the housing would be an eyesore that would diminish the magic of the Disney experience. This dispute was fought in the public but eventually would be decided by The Chamber of Commerce of Anaheim, California. The market and non-market shareholders in this dispute are both equally important. For Disney the expansion would add jobs and much needed revenue to the local economy as well as stop what it thought would be an eyesore. On the other Disney, a company that makes billions of dollars every year bringing the innocence and magic of the Disney experience, has to take into account that if the dispute is deemed mean spirited or immoral it could have a devastating effect on the finances of the company. Mattel was accountable for distributing numerous toys from their Chinese manufactures. This was one of the largest recalls in American history. The Mattel Corporation started in 1945. In 1960 it became a publically traded company. Mattel, one of the leading toy companies in the world employs around thirty thousand workers. They sell products in more than one hundred fifty countries. Mattel has many toys like Barbie, and Hot Wheels. Even with the issues that occurred with the toy recall, Mattel has always thought about as a highly accountable company. They have attained a high name with most of the shoppers of their merchandise. Mattel has even been recognized by Forbes magazine as one of the most trustworthy U.S. firms. This shows what a responsible company Mattel has been and the respect that they have received from their shoppers. Even though Mattel took many steps ensure the safety and quality of toys produced by their manufactures, there were flaws in their system that allowed less than desired products to reach consumers.
