Ever since I was old enough to hold a pencil, visual art has been a significant part of my life and has always been present as a thread connecting my interpretation of experiences. During my time studying, I had the opportunity to learn and experiment in multiple disciplines including: painting, graphic design, photography and sculpture. At The Chicago High School for the Arts, I was introduced to sewing as a skill for both fashion design and art. I was immediately absorbed into this area of study as I began investigating into the history of fashion for function, questions of identity, culture, and politics. This initial introduction has developed into a lasting commitment to this discipline from high school through college level.
At first, it was foreign for me to consider fashion as a form of…show more content… What interest me is I could create something physical that carries the power to help people to define and express their roles in the world. It offers me the opportunity to help people learn about their identity through second skin, in this skin people are free to question issues of gender, race, class, size, ideas of beauty, and the normalcy. Though I have had great experience with fashion and art I wouldn’t be able to defend why I am a great investment for CBSF Scholarship without explaining some of my struggles that, without art I wouldn’t have made it out of.
Imagine having everything you’ve dreamed of in the palm of your hands. Now Imagine that dream has been taken from your hands and placed right in front of you. You can’t reach it even though it’s so close and you can stretch out your arms, but it’s still isn’t close enough. This metaphor speaks volumes because I’m in a place where my dream is right in front of me. I have done all of the necessary things to reach that dream, but the only thing that is hindering my ability to grasp that dream is my own
