...Their press release covered all the basics of catfishing including how to recognize the scam, where victims can file a complaint, and advice on how to avoid becoming a victim in the first place (FBI Warns). However, the FBI made no statements concerning how they plan to combat the issue or any substantial information on how often or serious these cases can be. In fact, their stance on catfishing, while aware of the problem, was somewhat hands off and dismissive. Their advice was not comforting or too helpful and basically advised against interacting with people who exhibited signs of scamming and staying away from less popular and used sites. This type of press release did not at all demonstrate the hints of the future actions most people expect from their government. The FBI especially, being the national police, should be at the forefront of all crime on the rise and causing serious losses in our nation. They failed to display any initiative and gave information and advice equal to that of any small town sheriff's office. Catfishing and online dating fraud deserve a statement with more urgency and professionalism because they are recognized crimes and not just hurt feelings, regardless of their taking place over the...

...Internet Pornography: Freedom of Press or Dangerous Influence? The topic of pornography is controversial many times because of the various definitions which each have different contexts. Is it nudity, sexual intercourse, art, or all of these? Is it magazines, videos, or pictures? For the purposes of this paper, pornography will be defined as any material that depicts erotic behavior and is intended to cause sexual excitement. With all of the arguments presented in this paper, it seems only a vague definition of this type can be applicable to all views on the subject. Pornography on the Internet has brought about difficulties pertaining to censorship. All of the arguments in this paper can be divided into one of two categories: those whose aim is to allow for an uncensored Internet, and those who wish to completely eliminate pornography from the Internet all together. All arguments for an uncensored Internet all cite the basic rights offree speech and press. While arguments in this paper are international, almost everyone of them cites the First Amendment of the United States. In many of the papers it is implied that the United States sets precedent for the rest of the world as far as laws governing the global world of the Internet. Paul F. Burton, an Information Science professor and researcher, gives many statistics showing that presence of pornography on the Internet is not necessarily a bad thing. He gives one example that shows that "47% of the 11,000" most...

...your children that are not old enough to go to elementary school. Daycare centers should provide the emotional and social needs for babies that are crucial during the first two years of life in developing the learning structures of the brain. They provide a loving environment that will give your child a chance to grow and learn with other children their age and generally centers take kids as young as 6 weeks old to 6th grade. A center that has an after school program is another great way to supply additional income to the center by offering after school activities to keep kids busy until they are picked up by their parent after they are done working. Daycare centers that are not part of a big chain lack standard training for their personal. The person’s that are in the room’s with the younger kids are normally mothers, grandmothers or young adults that love kids but aren’t necessarily trained to watch them and nurture them during their development stages. Training should be a very big part of hiring teachers in daycare centers and it should be on-going where seminars should be attended or bring in some outside trainers that can help in staying current on what is expected from daycare teachers. The director of the daycare center called Kids World needs help in developing a training program for all of the employees that can also be used when hiring and training new employees in a quick and efficient manner. ...The media Anne O’Keeffe Historical overview of media discourse ‘The media’ is a very broad term, encompassing print and broadcast genres, that is anything from newspaper to chat show and, latterly, much more besides, as new media emerge in line with technological leaps. The study of ‘the media’ comes under the remit of media studies from perspectives such as their production and consumption, as well as their aesthetic form. The academic area of media studies cuts across a number of disciplines including communication, sociology, political science, cultural studies, philosophy and rhetoric, to name but a handful. Meanwhile, the object of study, ‘the media’, is an ever-changing and ever-growing entity. The study of ‘the media’ also comes under the radar of applied linguistics because at the core of these media is language, communication and the making of meaning, which is obviously of great interest to linguists. As Fairclough (1995a: 2) points out, the substantively linguistic and discoursal nature of the power of the media is a strong argument for analysing the mass media linguistically. Central to the connection between media studies and studies of the language used in the media (media discourse studies) is the importance placed on ideology. A major force behind the study of ideology in the media is Stuart Hall (see, for example, Hall 1973, 1977, 1980, 1982). Hall (1982), in his influential paper, notes that the study of media (or ‘mass communication’) has had...

The Background Enron was founded as a pipeline company in Houston in 1985. Enron was a company that was able to profit by providing the delivery of gas to utility companies and businesses at the fair value market price. ...The representation of terrorism, Islam and Muslim identities on popular US series Homeland Introduction Images of Muslim and Islam have dramatically increased in the media coverage as well as popular culture ever since we have entered the “post-9/11 era”, as Elizabeth Poole observed. (2008:81) The shocking real life images from the horrifying terrorist attack in September 2011 has triggered various interpretation on the discourse of what it means to be Muslim and the image of Islam and its culture in the western media, and still have profound influence even after more than a decade and ongoing. Apart from the coverage on news media, TV entertainment, especially TV dramas also provide a powerful outlet for the popular prevailing discourses on Muslim and Islamic culture, which compare to news reports, leaves a more vivid and graphic impression on audience with its discourse and narratives. The proposed subject I am going to study is revolved around the representation of Islam and Muslim identity in the popular US TV drama Homeland. (Showtime, 2011) Homeland (Showtime, 2011) has been arguably the most successful TV series focusing on the theme of counter-terrorism and national security across the Atlantic since 2011, following its predecessor 24 (Fox, 2001) developed by the same producers. When asked what made the show distinctive compared to its predecessors, Damian Lewis, who played as Sgt Nicholas Brody, the male lead in Homeland replied, “We feel a bit differently...

...Sustainability of Microfinance Self Help Groups in India: Would Federating Help? Ajai Nair, Graduate Student Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs Princeton University Abstract Self Help Group (SHG) banking is the primary mode of microfinance in India today, reaching over six million families. In spite of its considerable outreach, successful savings mobilization and high repayment rates, as with most other microfinance models, the financial viability of SHG banking has not been clear. SHG federations attempt to provide financial viability and sustainability to SHG banking. This study explores the merits of federating and finds that SHG federations create economies of scale, reduce promotional and transaction costs, enable provision of value added services and increase empowerment of the poor. Acknowledgements This study was done for the South Asia Region Finance and Private Sector Development Unit of the World Bank. The support of Sophie Sirtaine at the World Bank, who helped design the study and took time to read through the different drafts, is gratefully acknowledged. I thank all the organizations visited and individuals interviewed for their cooperation, and participants of the various fora at which the initial drafts were presented for their valuable comments. I also thank Marilou, Director, South Asia Region Finance and Private Sector Development Unit and other members of the unit for...

FEMA also coordinates federal emergency management activities and planning for the continuity of government should national security be threatened. Since 1979 FEMA has administered a range of authorities that enable the agency to serve as the primary source of federal technical and financial assistance for emergency management. Among the types of aid provided through FEMA programs are grants and material to help disaster victims meet pressing needs such as food and shelter, education and training programs to improve the response capabilities of nonfederal officials, and mobile communications equipment. FEMA exercises little regulatory authority, but directives that underlie the agency’s mission authorize the agency to establish standards for reconstruction of buildings after a disaster declaration is issued, for the construction of federal buildings in earthquake-prone areas, and for the operation of first responder equipment. FEMA has responded...
