The heart is an organ that, together with the veins and arteries makes up the cardiovascular system. Being a muscular organ that pumps blood through a network of veins and arteries, the various bodily tissues are supplied with oxygenated blood (WebMD, 2009).
Being located behind the sternum and between the lungs, the heart must be protected at all times as it is an important organ (Bianco, 2013). While you sleep, while you are awake sitting down or exercising, the heart never stops beating. Specifically designed chambers and valves contribute to the effectiveness of the cardiovascular system and the action of heat beats and contractions that pump blood around the body. Close to the heart is the Sinoatrial node, which generates electrical impulses that triggers the heart to contract, forcing blood out, and upon relaxing, allowing blood to pour in (Laizzo, 2010).

As the human body needs a supply of oxygen, and the only way to get it is via enriched blood, the human body is not able to live without the heart you are born with. That being said, there have been medical advancements achieved which enables the survival of a patient who has suffered a severe cardiac event. Many of these techniques are only temporary until a more stable decision can be made (Heart Foundation, 2013).

Cardiopulmonary Bypass is used for taking over the lungs and heart of a patient having cardiothoracic surgery. Cardiopulmonary Bypass works to oxygenate the blood and pump it around the body while the heart is being operated on, as it is difficult to perform surgery on a beating, functioning heart. Cardiopulmonary Bypass can also be used on a patient who has suffered complete heart failure and is awaiting a transplant (Heisler, 2011).

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is another method used on babies and infants who are suffering breathing or heart problems. ECMO

...more do I have to hurt to see your heart I wanted to tell you but tears are welling up This is what I’m telling you I only wait for you Because I love you (Because I love you) Because I couldn’t hold on to you Because I couldn’t stop There are so many traces of you Because to me, it’s you I want you desperately to death Because it’s only you Whatever it takes, I need to wait So will you please take a step closer to me? You know that I only have you Please don’t leave me alone Every time I see you with my sad eyes Without a word, I looked and you and smiled This is what I’m telling you I only love you Because I love you (Because I love you) You are filled in my head It is filled with memories There are so many traces of you Because to me, it’s you I want you desperately to death Because it’s only you Whatever it takes, I need to wait So will you please take a step closer to me? You know that I only have you Please don’t leave me alone I want to show you I want to make you listen But you aren’t by my side So it hurts even more Because to me, it’s you I want you desperately to death Because it’s only you Whatever it takes, I need to wait So will you please take a step closer to me? Love

...then I’ll hug you as tight as I could and tell Death, “Let’s go. I’m ready!”  0102. I miss you not because you miss me but because you taught me how to feel the emptiness when you’re not here. I love you not because you love me but because you taught me everything I never knew existed before. 0103. When you leave, remember the place where you left me cause I’ll still be there waiting for you. But if you go back and I’m no longer there, it means that I love you too much so I went to search for you.  0104. It’s a risk having you cause it’s like stealing an angel from heaven. If I’d be punished for that, I’d rather accept it than give you back cause I know that I’d never have another you in my life again.  0105. I dreamed of a wedding of elaborate elegance, a church filled with flowers and friends. I asked him what kind of wedding he wished for, he said, “One that will make you my wife.”  0106. I’m not asking you to stay for the rest of my life, stay as long as you want. No why’s, no how’s, no but’s, no promises. Just stay. It’s more than enough.  0107. I’m not sure what I am to you and what we are right now but what really matters is you’re so damn special to me and I mean my life only for you. All I’m after is for you to know, you don’t have to feel the same. 0108. I may not be with you always but I promise you one thing. Mystics

...oneness of god, ourselves and all things. Although I am not God, I am not other than God either. That there is a oneness that wholly pervades the divisions and fragmentations of our lives, and the realization of this oneness the divisions and fragmentations loses their tyranny over our heart for we live in the intimate experience of the oneness that wholly pervades the divisions and fragmentations. And they live with a sense of joy and sense of freedom from fear, that fear has no foundations, a sense of peace in the midst of life as it is. Its not the peace that’s dependent on the outcome of our efforts to have the situation turn out the way we want it to. Rather it is a peace that invincibly pervades the whole process and the outcome itself regardless of the outcome. Mystics bear witness to this realized oneness with a sense of respect even reverence for life, for all things, manifested most concretely as love. As the Buddhists say, compassion is the body of emptiness, Aquinas, charity is the form of faith, that love is the shape of our faith, that faith configures itself as love. The mystic is hidden in the world as God is hidden in the world, but some are called upon to be mystic teachers, called upon to offer guidance and encouragement to us who feel interiorly called to this path of realized oneness. To be amazed and humbled that this applies to you, to be interiorly awakened in this way to this oneness and to live in fidelity to it. They also know that at some point...

Personal Narrative: My Congenital Heart Defect

...I was born two weeks past my due date and had some issues early in my life that caused a few hospitalizations. My doctors now believe that my condition could have been identified much sooner. When I was just two weeks old, my mother took me to the doctor due to my hands and feet turning blue during certain times and her concern was that something was not right. I was treated several times for symptoms of pneumonia which with the help of my medical research, I now realize it could have been indicative lack of oxygen due to my undiagnosed heart condition. There were many signs during my youth that were indicative of my heart condition that could have been treated differently if the doctors had looked into it. I was always small in stature, I have several eye and vascular issues that were affected by the lack of oxygen, I always worked extra hard within athletics and was very slow to improve. My doctors and I now believe all of these issues could have been much less significant should my Congenital Heart Defect (CHD) have been discovered and repaired early in my life. A simple pulse oximetry test at my birth may have picked up my condition and proper treatment delivered but back in 1999 when I was born that test was not standard procedure after birth at the hospital in which I was born. Similar stories to mine are more common than...

Best friends Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass, its about learning to dance in the rain." “Dream as if you'll live forever, live as if you'll die today." "Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away." We are never given dreams without also being given the power to make them come true. Are we not like two volumes of one book? My best friend is the someone who brings out the best of me. A friend is someone who knows the song in your heart and can sing it back to you when you have forgotten the words. A true friend is someone who holds who up when you’re down. A good friend sees the first tear, catches the second and stops the third the reason we’re not sisters, is because our parents couldn’t handle us if we were sisters. you're such an important part of my life you are my companion, my twin, my best friend If you love something, set it free if it comes back, it was meant to be. If it continues to fly, let it soar, have faith that God has something better in store. Sometimes I wish I had never met you because then I could go to sleep at night not knowing there was someone like you out there. "If you love something, let it go. Congestive Heart Failure Research Paper

...Robert great summarization post of congestive heart failure, my grandfather had congestive heart failure so I know first hand the effects it has on a person’s life. I thought it was very interesting that you pointed out one the first symptoms being not able to exercise without experiencing discomfort because not many individuals think of that as being a symptom they go to the go to symptoms like shortness of breath, coughing, and fatigue. In the beginning, before my grandfather was diagnosed with congestive heart failure he experienced difficulties lying down flat. Lying down flat causes parts of the lung to be in a more ¬¬¬dependent position. Another symptom to keep in mind for an individual with congestive heart failure is waking up with severe shortness of breath, and immediately needing to sit up to get their breath, and this is known as “paroxysmal nocturnal dyspnea”. The reason why there is a fluid build is when the heart’s output decreases; the body tries to compensate for it by releasing hormones that make the heart beat faster and stronger. This reflex though is only a short-term gain, and in the long run it really damages the heart’s function. The kidneys also sense the heart’s decrease in blood output, and they release hormones into the body, which cause sodium and...

Love

...one day left to live? “What would you do if you had only one day left to live?” I asked this question to my young students when teaching English this winter. What were their answers? “I would watch television!” the first answer. “I would play with the computer!” the second one. “I would play with computer TOO.” The girl finished her sentence perfectly with a serious smile. Indeed how cute and innocent that smile was, but how seriously my heart was hurt. I was too frightened to listen to more answers like that. Ten years ago, at their age, I had a different answer: I would spend the last day of my life gazing at the face of my dear grandmother until I inscribed every detail of it onto my mind. When grandmother was getting old and weak, my family bought her a telephone so I could save time and the trouble of traveling to her home by making phone calls instead. Later we bought her a television so she could watch modern dramas by herself. Then grandma must have been, we assumed, very contented and happy. But I never really knew how grandma felt. She silently passed away without a word one night. When I heard about her death, a chilling pain pierced my empty heart. The pain grew even sharper as I tried to remember in detail exactly how grandma looked and I failed completely! How could I remember? I had not visited her for ages—it seemed like a century! My memories of her dissolved into thin air and leaked away like water. Even though I have a telephone...

...Phuong Nguyen Caring and Compassion 1/ Following the example of the Sisters of Jesus who lived among the tapirape as midwives, and living a caring and sharing life with the these people are possible for anyone of us in global society. The important thing that we all need to learn from the good example of the Sisters of Jesus is living the gospel without a connection with power because power represents the privilege of a certain group such as social, political, or cultural groups, but not the majority of people. First of all, living the gospel is living with the true attitude of compassion and caring towards the other who is in need, and being willing to help the other without any prejudice. In particular, when we find anyone who need help, in spite that he is not close to us, not from our cultural group, racial group, or nationality etc, we have to fill ourselves with compassion and with love to treat the other right. It is just like how the Sisters chose to live with the Tapirape. Despite all the hardships that they were facing, they helped the tribe wholeheartedly by all means without expecting to have any return. The Sisters helped the tribe with their orchards, shared understanding, and endurance throughout their daily strive for food, maintain their language, culture, customs and religion. This concept is also demonstrated by Jesus. During his mission on earth, he never shared any prejudice toward the other in spite of whichever group he belongs to, either Jews or Samaritans...

Heart Transplant Patient

... SUBJECT: Heart Transplant Patient FROM: Jarrah P. Sanders Lead Surgeon TO: Cynthia Simon Professor It has just been aware to me that a Heart has become available for one of the three canidents on our Transplant list. After extensive consideration, it is my recommendation that the newly found heart be given to Jerry. Jerry is a better fit for this transplant; he has better chances and a better outcome with getting the transplant. After reviewing Ozzie’s chart, I felt as though he would not be a good recipient for this heart. I really appreciated the fact that he has been tutoring and mentoring to the youth, and he has signed a contract stating that if he got the transplant he would continue to tutor and stay clean for at least a year after the transplant. My concern is what happens after that year? The benefits to Ozzie getting the transplant would be he can continue to tutor the at risk youth that he has been helping and continue to make a difference in their lives. The harms of Ozzie getting this transplant would be him having a relapse and only waiting out that year before he began to use again. Even though this transplant would give him another 10 years or so to live Ozzie also has Recidivism which is sever with abuse and if he were to return to using again it would be a waste of the heart and he would die in a matter of months. The Last Spring

...The last spring I remember once I had someone very dear to me, someone that left deep traces in my life, someone that would live in my heart forever, someone that I will never forget. In order to preserve the memory of this angel, a divine human creature, I devote this story to my friend because her innocence and her fragility has been inspiring me for years. I hope that many people will understand the hidden message once they've read the story. It was a wonderful spring dawning. The air was poisoned with nothing else but the strong smell of the spring flowers and the joy of the birds' songs. We were holding our hands and happily as happy can two little girls be, we were bouncing and jumping in the park. Spring could be seen in our eyes, sunshine could be recognized in our smile. It seemed to us like we were flying in the air as two colourful butterflies from a flower to a flower, each of them more and more beautiful, each of them more and more attracting, as if they were the last days of our lives and each of them was more and more challenging. Smiling faces everywhere, people could envy our happy childhood reflected in the deepness of our sight. We were so excited in those spring rainbows above our heads without knowing that this would be our last spring together, remembered afterwards as the coldest one and the darkest one in my life. It's funny how Marta and I met at a beach resort. We could never imagine that we were going to be inseparable friends. Although...
