...Medical Issues Cancer Instructor: Daniella Atwell January 14, 2013 Cancer is a deadly disease that affects so many people and their families. Cancer is one of the leading causes of death in the world today. Some studies say that one in three people will suffer from some form of cancer in their life. There are several different types of cancer that effect different parts of the body. Cancer is treated in various different ways and some kinds of cancer are curable, and some are not. Every person on this planet will ultimately one day have to leave it behind. It is not the choice of the person whether they go peacefully or whether they go with pain. More often than not a person will go with pain. More people die every day from cancer and it appears to mess up the lives of all those connected with it. What people need to understand is yes cancer is a life altering event; however cancer is not the end of the world. Death is at times inevitable and there is no way around it. Possibly cancer patients realize this more than anyone. “All creatures born upon this earth must, in the end, die. Some live long and peaceful lives. But others are caught up in struggles and must fight for their lives” (Silverstein 12-13). Cancer patients will struggle and fight for their lives and not have the relief of dying peacefully. The exact cause of cancer is unknown. Many causes probably exist, and it may be necessary for a variety of factors to be present in order for cancer to develop...

...Pancreatic Cancer Research Grad2016 Abstract This paper is looking into the effects of pancreatic cancer and the research behind it. Pancreatic cancer is one of the most deadly forms of cancer known and contributes to over 30,000 deaths a year in the U.S. alone. Little is known about this killer cancer or of an accurate treatment. Unfortunately this disease has a very low survival rate even with treatment. There are several benefactors associated with this disease that we will discuss as well. These include alcohol abuse, genetics, tobacco, diabetes and lifestyle. There is a lot of research being conducted on this killer disease with hopes of increasing the survival rate with a cure or early diagnosis. One of the most deadly cancers is known as Pancreatic Cancer. This type of cancer is confined to the pancreas and is responsible for thousands of deaths every year. Little is known about the true cause of pancreatic cancer or a curable treatment. One of the reasons it is associated with the most deadly cancers is the fact that even with treatment it still has a very low survival rate. According to H. Chang (2007) only 10-15% of patients can expect to be cured by treatment. Out of the 30,000 plus patients that are diagnosed each year that is a very low survival rate. Pancreatic cancer is very hard to diagnose at an early stage because there is no precursor standard that is associated with it. Recent research has identified an association with hyperglycemia with patients...

...has undergone this, I have chosen skin cancer for this research assignment. I chose this specific cancer because it is formed by everyday activities and should be hopefully cured with a simple awareness and research. Cancer is a disease that results from cells multiplying without restraint and affecting body tissue. Skin cancer is a form of cancer in which there is an abnormal growth of skin cells. According to extensive research, skin cancer is found wherever there is exposure to sun; examples include face, ears, neck, backs of hands, and lips. Skin cancer should be cured because I believe that we should live worry free and not have to constantly be concerned about an everyday activity, resulting...

...SOAR Cancers Material Skin Cancers Text There are three types of skin cancers: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and malignant melanoma. Basal cell carcinoma is the most common of the three types. Cells just below the surface of the skin become cancerous, causing a tumor to develop that often becomes an ulcer. The cell damage is usually the result of long-term exposure to strong sunlight, but it can be years before skin cancer develops. The ulcer grows slowly as it destroys the tissue at its edges. Unlike many malignant or life threatening growths, it does not spread to other parts of the body until a long time after it forms. A small, flesh-colored lump appears on the skin when basal cell carcinoma is present. The face is a common site, especially next to the eye or nose. In about six weeks, the lump becomes an ulcer with a hard border and a moist center that might bleed. Scabs might repeatedly form over the ulcer but never heal. Basal cell carcinoma rarely metastasizes but it does cause local tissue destruction and disfigurement if neglected. Untreated, it will grow relentlessly and destroy nearby body parts such as an eye or ear. Death rarely occurs from this type of skin cancer. Basal cell carcinoma can be prevented by using a sun block lotion and by wearing protective clothing such as a wide brimmed hat when exposed to the sun. When this type of cancer is diagnosed by a physician, it is removed using any of the following procedures: conventional surgery...

...Bladder cancer, in the nature of, most other cancers, has a long list of factors that can attribute to the risk of someone getting bladder cancer rising. Smoking tobacco based products, such as cigarettes and cigars and pipes, have the ability to cause detrimental chemicals to gather in urine. Because of the fact that when people smoke, the body processes the chemicals and expels a number of them through the urine. Age is also a great factor. Bladder cancer is less common in people under the age of 40, but people over the age of 60 are more likely to have bladder cancer (Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research). White people are two times as likely to get bladder cancer as African Americans are. Hispanics, Asians, and Native Americans share a lower rate of bladder cancer, and the reasons for these differences are uncertain (American Cancer Society)....

...1. What is Lung Cancer? Lung cancer is one of the most common and difficult malignancies, and is thus a major focus of research. To understand lung cancer, it is important to understand the anatomy of the lungs. The lungs are organs found in the chest and are responsible for oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange. Each lung consists of lobes. The left lung contains two lobes, and the right lung contains three lobes. When you breathe in, air travels into your lungs through the trachea (windpipe). The trachea then splits into two tubes, called the bronchi. The bronchi continue to branch forming smaller bronchioles, and at the end of these bronchioles are small air sacs called alveoli....

...Breast cancer still remains a very significant research. Breast cancer is the leading cause of death in women the ages of 30’s and late 40’s. Breast cancer is controlled growth and spread of abnormal cells. When growth takes place , the cancer cells form a tumor then those cells invade the neighboring tissues and organs. Usually in the early stages of breast cancer there is no signs of symptoms. As the tumor develops you may note the following symptoms: A lump on the breast Swelling in the armpit Pain in the breasts A noticeable indentation or flattening on the breast Any change in the size, contour, texture or the temperature of the breast (a reddish surface of the skin of an orange could be a sign of advanced cancer) . Women go to...

Breast cancer is a kind of cancer where cells grow out of control in the breast. The breast is the first site of cancer but overtime, the cells can spread to other parts of the body. Breast cancer is a malignant tumor that can grow into surrounding tissues or spread to other areas of the body. Breast cancer can occur in both women and men, even though there is only a 1% chance for men to be diagnosed with breast cancer. (The American Cancer Society) The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that there is a few different types of breast cancers and the most common types are Ductal Carcinoma and Lobular...

...Cancer and its related complications are areas of interest for researchers these days because of the complexity of the signs, symptoms and progression of the disease. Cancer patients are chronic sufferers and require effective physiological and psychological management of the complications. Pain is a common complication of end stage cancer patients who are undergoing either curative or palliative treatment. It can range from mild, moderate and severe depending on the progress of the disease. When it comes to palliative or end stage cancer (terminal illness), severe chronic pain management becomes even difficult for the family and health care providers. In fact, in such cases pain becomes primary and chief complaint of people for referrals....

...According to recent cancer research in the United Kingdom there are more than 200 different types of cancer. The Wellness: Concepts and Applications 8th edition text book defines cancer as a disease caused by uncontrolled division of abnormal cells in an area of the body. The National Cancer Institute states that the lifetime risk of men and women developing cancer is approximately 40.4%. In fact 2011 data records show that there are an estimated 13 million people living with a type of cancer in the United States alone. In addition The Thomara Latimer Cancer Foundation estimates about 600,000 of that 13 million to die, averaging about 1,500 people a day. Cancer is a worldwide epidemic that is killing thousands of lives daily. On the other hand...

With a population of 157 million women in the United States, that means around 20 million women have a chance of getting affected by breast cancer. However due to technology and medical advances, there has been a decline in mortality rates due to breast cancer. Since 1989, there has been an increase in breast cancer survivorship (“U.S. Breast Cancer Statistics”). Most people don’t consider that these women have to face challenges and hardships after cancer. Due to the traumatic experience, many women are left with psychosocial...

...Cancer is a disease caused by the abnormal cells in a part of the body. Cancer can start anywhere in the human body. Normal human cells grow and divide and form new cells when the body needs them. When normal cells become old or when they are damaged new cells take their place. When cancer develops that process is starts to break down. Cells become more abnormal and the old cells or damaged will stay and new cells will not form when needed which may cause a tumor. Many cancers form tumors but cancer of the blood do not form tumors. Cancerous tumors are malignant, which means they can invade nearby tissues. However benign tumors do not invade nearby tissues. Breast cancer is a cancer that forms in the cells of the breast. The causes of breast...
