7-23 Which specific training techniques should Jennifer use to train her pressers, her cleaner/spotters, her managers, and her counter people? Why should these training techniques be used?
Each category of positions will require a different combination of methods for training.
For Pressers and Cleaners/Spotters, the use of Vestibule Training would be the most beneficial for these positions because they are dealing with machinery that they need to become familiar with. In order to learn how to use the different machines, they must use them. Because of the danger associated with the use of this machinery, it is best to train off the job on practice garments.
Behavioral Modeling, Lectures, Diversity and Team Training and Management Games would be the most practical ways to provide training for managers. Each of these types of training methods together offer manager’s the opportunity to develop skills in problem-solving, planning strategies and leadership as well as developing people skills, which is essential to being an effective manager.
The use of Lectures can provide people functioning in the Counter position with knowledge about the different types of customers they can encounter and how they can attend to their varying needs appropriately. Another approach to assist with this could include the Behavioral Modeling training technique. This type of training gives them the opportunity to play out different scenarios and practice on how to effectively handle a variety of situations through appropriate communication.
8-19 Is Jennifer right about the need to evaluate the workers formally? The managers? Why or why not?
Jennifer is correct that they need to implement a formal evaluation for their employees as well as their managers. The informal evaluations performed by Jack through general feedback can be viewed as an unfair practice that could lead to

Carter V. Us

...chose the case Carter v. United States – Carter v. United States, 530 U.S. 255 (2000). The parties involved in this case were Floyd J. Carter, the petitioner and the United States of America, the defendant. In 1997, Mr. Carter entered the Collective Federal Savings bank with a ski mask and no weapon. Carter robbed the bank for roughly $16,000. When Carter was arrested he was charged with federal bank robbery – 18 USC Section 2113(a). This statute states "[w]hoever, by force and violence, or by intimidation, takes... any... thing of value [from a] bank." (Carter). Mr. Carter entered a not guilty plea saying that he had not taken the bank’s money by force. Violence, or intimidation, so he did not meet the requirements of the statute that he was charged under. Mr. Carter then put in a motion that the court give instructions to the jury that they should consider federal bank larceny (USC Section 2113(b). This would make Mr. Carter guilty of larceny instead of robbery. The larceny law states, “[w]hoever takes and carries away, with intent to steal or purloin, any... thing of value exceeding $1,000 [from a]... bank," (Carter). The difference between bank robbery and the larceny offense is a ten-year maximum difference – larceny carrying a 10-year maximum sentence and robbery carrying a 20-year maximum sentence. The court denied the motion and the jury found Mr. Carter guilty on robbery. This sentence was affirmed by the Court of Appeals. The question of this case is “whether...

Carter Cleaning Case Solution

...Chapter 1Application Case: Jack Nelson's Problem   1. What do you think was causing some of the problems in the bank home office and branches? There is clearly aproblem with communication, and the effects are felt in the area of employee commitment. Additional contributingfactors include the lack of consistency in the policies and procedures of various locations. There is no cohesiveness tothe staffing activities of this organization. 2. Do you think setting up a HR unit in the main office would help? Of course we think it would! Since there are HR-related problems both in the home office and in the branches, it is clear that if a personnel office were set up, it wouldneed to help to coordinate the HR activities in the branches. 3. What specific functions should it carry out? What HR functions would then be carried out by supervisors andother line managers? What role should the Internet play in the new HR organization? There is room for quite abit of variation in the answers to this question. Our suggested organization would include: HR Unit: job analyses, planning labor needs and recruiting, providing advising and training in the selection process, orientation of newemployees, managing wage and salary administration, managing incentives and benefits, providing and managing theperformance appraisal process, organization-wide communications, and providing training & developing services.Supervisors and Other Line Managers: interviewing and selection of job candidates, training...

Carter Cleaning Cases 9-10

...Carter Cleaning case: Chapter 9 1. Is Jennifer right about the need to evaluate the workers formally? The managers? Why or why not? Jennifer is absolutely correct in having these employee evaluations done formally. Reason for is to protect Carter Cleaning Company and its business goals from discrimination charges or violations of Title VII of the 1964 Civil rights Act. Informal evaluations can lead to unfair appraisals which can open a can of unexpected problems. All employees should receive formal evaluations via by paper or electronic forms in order to have a documented history. Keeping employee evaluations on file makes it easier for employers to reference certain information needed for promotions or projects, etc. Jennifer should get with Jack to discuss what performance dimensions should be measured and how to measure them. Once they’ve come to a decision, Jennifer should look in to developing a sort of graphic rating scale. 2. Develop a performance appraisal method for the workers and managers in each store. Growing Pains

...office. She must have been talking with Les Finch, Maher thought. Here’s trouble. Of course, it didn’t necessarily mean any- thing, Maher told himself as he passed the of- fice, waving to Carter. Finch, a well-connected marketing consultant, had been the match- maker between Carter and Waterway Indus- tries to begin with. With the company in the fourth quarter of its best year ever, he certainly wouldn’t be encouraging her to leave. Would he? Maher got a cup of coffee in the company’s first floor kitchenette and deliberately took the long way back to his office, through the design room. As always, the atmosphere was upbeat, but these days he also thought he could detect a sense of purpose that had never before been a part of Waterway’s organization. Founded in 1963 in Lake Placid, New York, Waterway had started out as a small, high- quality canoe maker. Over the years, it had built a good reputation all through the North- east and had acquired a base of customers in the Pacific Northwest as well. By 1982, Water- way was comfortably ensconced in the canoe market nationwide, and it had maintained a steady growth right up until 1990. Then, at the insistence of a friend who was the head of a major dealer and expedition company, Maher had decided to venture into kayaks. His friend HBR’s cases, which are fictional, present common managerial dilemmas and offer...

Economic recession happens periodically and employees would be laid off from the company during that time. Some of the companies equip their employees with vital skills during recession period and improve the organization’s prospect. This in turn would increase the loyalty and organizational commitment of the employees. The same concept is applied here in ‘Coach Carter’.
