...Cell Phones and Cancer In today's innovative era of technological breakthroughs, we enjoy many benefits of technology, which give us the power to get things done faster, enjoy greater convenience, and have access to wonderful tools that improve all areas of life (Siepmann, 2004). However, there are many concerns that we are paying a price for these benefits-perhaps in the form of cancer. Major concerns arise from the fact that we are increasingly exposed to logarithmically increasing non-ionizing radiation from wireless systems, cell phones, satellite transmissions, electricity transmission, and other products. This paper aims to present a solid argument that cell phones, in particular, may be a cause of cancer. Researchers suggest that high power electrical distribution lines may increase the incidence of certain cancers (Siepmann, 2004). According to the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) (1990): “In conclusion, the several studies showing leukemia, lymphoma and cancer of the nervous system in children exposed to magnetic fields from residential 60 Hz electrical power distribution systems, supported by similar findings in adults in several occupational studies also involving electrical power frequency exposures, show a consistent pattern of response that suggests, but does not prove, a causal link. Frequency components higher than 60 Hz cannot be ruled out as contributing factors. Evidence from a large number of biological test systems shows that these fields induce...

...Cell Phones Called 'Possible' Cancer Cause Author: LeWine, Howard Publication info: Harvard Health Publications. Harvard Reviews of Health News . (Jun 2011). ProQuest document link Abstract: Cell phones are a "possible cause" of cancer, one group of experts says in a report to the World Health Organization (WHO). This puts cell phones into the same category as car exhaust, the pesticide DDT, coffee and more than 200 other substances. The decision came from the International Agency for Research on Cancer, part of WHO. The Associated Press wrote about it. Agency experts reviewed dozens of studies about cell phones. They concluded that there was limited evidence linking cell phone use to two types of brain tumors. They found too little evidence to draw conclusions for other cancers. About 30 studies done around the world have not found more cell phone use among people who developed brain tumors. A large study last year found no clear link between cell phones and cancer. But it did suggest a possible link between very heavy phone use and glioma, one form of brain cancer. ...The brain is the human body's most mysterious and sophisticated organ, it is the central key of our intelligence, understanding and, emotion, along with our memory speech, senses and many more. The brain has the ability to control and shape a human’s life. Without it there would be nothing. Unfortunately there are more than 600 neurological disorders. Neurological disorders ADHD, Aneurysm ect, are some examples.1 One of the most rapid fast killing brain diseases today are the cancerous brain tumors. Brain tumors are one of the fastest growing causes of cancer death especially among seniors. They are the fastest growing due to an abnormal development growth of cells that have multiplied in an uncontrolled manner.1 Because brain tumors are located in the brain it is difficult to treat them. In recent studies scientists and researchers have found links to brain cancer and cell phone use. According to the National Cancer Institute the evidence is that using cell phones increases the risk of developing glioma, a deadly form of brain cancer.2 A Swedish study found that people who talked on cell phones for more than 25 years had triple the risk compared to those who used the phones for less than a year. However finding studies of cell phone and...

...Your Cell Phone? Olivia Kinser Advanced Composition CM380 Anna Jordal February 10, 2014 Just How Harmful is Your Cell Phone? That little device you always have in your hand or pocket, the one you use to check the weather, communicate with your friends, or simply scroll through social media sites with – this little device is what’s known as a cell phone. Most people find this device as something that is needed to live, but have you ever wondered just how harmful a cell phone is to your body? If you text and drive, do you realize how dangerous it is? Or are you one of those people that don’t stop to think about this type of stuff because regardless, you can’t live without it? Either way, one should take into consideration what exactly it’s doing to your body and even the people around you. The device that you think is just keeping you in contact with all your friends may be causing you headaches, memory loss, DNA damage, malignant brain tumors, or even a car accident. Radiofrequency energy, also known as radio waves, is a form of non-ionizing radiation. Your cell phone emits these electromagnetic frequency (EMF) waves that penetrate a users’ brain. The tissues closest to where the phone is held absorbs in this energy. “The WTR (Wireless Technology Research) study showed a correlation between a higher incident of brain cancer and a great risk of rare neurological tumors and DNA damage among the users of handheld phones versus users of other types of phones” (Brown...

...Taylor Hogan BIO Research Paper Lawrence Cwik 14 April 2014 Over the past decade the debate between the relationship between brain disease and cell phone radiation has been a current issue. Whether or not the radio frequency cell phones put out can lead to brain bombardment of any type such as brain tumors, brain disease, etc. There have been many case studies, experiments, and the use of high levels of technology to be able to determine the answers to such a controversial issue. Through the explanation of different levels radiation and what radiowave/frequency the cell phones emits, the scientific effect of the radiation on the brain, and lastly through the research to answer the question of whether or not this could be a cause of brain disease to occur. Though there is a lot of supporting evidence that has been found on this topic, I do not believe that cell phone radiation can lead to brain disease. Mobile devices emit very small levels of radiation, though there are many different types of radiation: Electromagnetic radiation, x-rays, and gamma rays. These different forms radiation has been found electromagnetic radiation linking to some cancers (Leikind). Where as theses types of radiation can have a negative impact on the body and become very dangerous over time. Radiation can break covalent bonds in ones body (Lekind). When using a cell phone though one is allowing the electromagnetic fields to constantly bombard the body but not to the levels of harm. Electromagnetic...

...January 2012 “Radiation and Cancer: The Connection between Cell Phone Use and Brain Cancer” According to a Baltimore neurologist, Christopher J. Newman, Motorola is the cause a life frightening tumor that has developed overtime in his brain. Newman sues Motorola for “a direct and proximate result of the defective and unreasonably dangerous condition of the relevant products” (Parascandola). The court system and scientist are feuding on the matter of using scientific data as evidence in court cases. The courts argue whether or not the data is applicable and reliable. Hence, the association of cellular phone radiation and brain cancer is still under dispute on whether there is a correlation in between the two. Worldwide there are over 4.3 billion cell phone users (web). This substantial number of cell phone users also causes generous amount of radiation to be generated. The radiation that is discharged through these devices is to as radio frequency (RF) energy. The measure of RF energy that is taken in by users is known as its Specific Absorption Rate or SAR. SAR is what researchers use to compare radiation given off by cell phones to cancerous tumors. Scientist research the amount of SAR that is exposed in different mobile phone models. For a phone to pass the Federal Communication Commission its SAR must be less than 1.6 W/kg (web). Researchers from CNET in 2007 did a study to show the quantity of radiation given off by various cell phone models. Figure 1 shows the...

...Cell phones and brain cancer Now a days everyone has a cell phone. People of all ages rely on their cell phone for daily tasks. How many times a person feels absolutely powerless without a cell phone? Which leads us to a very important question. What type of damage does the use of cell phone causes in the brain? The purpose of this paper is to explore if there is evidence that will link cell phone use and brain cancer. There has been a tremendous increase of cell phone use that is starting at a young age. This means a longer exposure to cell phones throughout life. Currently, people do not seem preoccupied with the idea of brain cancer. There are no reports of cell phone use decrease from consumers. People start using cell phone at a younger age every year. Middle school admission paper work requests student’s cell phone number to inform emergency situations, which leads to pressure to parent to get the student a phone. Some people are abstaining from traditional phone line service in their homes. Phones lines can be seen as waste of money since cell phone use is more prominent in some households. University of Great Fall’s library research data base was used to search for evidence that will link cell phone use and brain cancer. The keywords used where “cell phone use and brain cancer.” The Bosnian Journal of Basic Medical Science reviewed total of 30 studies on mobile phones, all but one were case-control studies (Bayazit, Bayram, Pala, & Atan, 2010, p. 246). The...

...CNS (Central Nervous System) Cancer I. Anatomy The central nervous system (CNS) is made up by the brain and spinal cord. This complex system controls both things that we intentionally think about and do, like walking and talking, and essential body functions that occur without specific thought on our part, such as breathing and digesting food. The CNS is also involved with the five senses of seeing, hearing, touching, tasting, and smelling, as well as emotions, thoughts, and memory. The brain is a soft, spongy organ that is made up of nerve cells and tissue. It is divided into three major sections: the cerebrum, the cerebellum, and the brainstem. The cerebrum is the largest part of the brain, and is divided into two halves, called the right and left hemispheres. The right hemisphere controls the left side of the body and the left hemisphere controls the right side of the body. Each hemisphere is further divided into sections called lobes. There are four lobes in each hemisphere: the frontal, parietal, occipital, and temporal, and each lobe is responsible for certain functions. A brain tumor is a mass of abnormal cells that is growing in or around the brain. It develops when abnormal cells multiply for unknown reasons. Benign and malignant are terms used to describe brain tumors. Benign brain tumors are usually slow growing and have distinct borders and a normal appearance under a microscope. Malignant tumors are considered brain cancer. They tend to invade healthy...

...Research on Mobile Phones Effects Dr. Abdullah AlOrainy Inst. of Electronics Research, KACST P. O. Box: 230471, Riyadh 11321, Saudi Arabia E-mail: alorainy@kacst.edu.sa ABSTRACT The use of mobile phones always accompanied by the issue of health implications for human. Previous research studies show no evidence of the impacts of mobile phones to human health. New studies suggest that mobile radiation might double the risk of developing cancer on the side of the head used, increase brain activity, can cause damage to nerves around ears and, more importantly, damages the BBB. Also new research shows that biological effects are possible without any warming of tissues which impose of the current radiation exposure levels. KEYWORDS Mobile Radiation, Health Effects INTRODUCTION There are now about 1 Billion mobile phones in use worldwide, and it is expected to reach 1.6B lines by year 2005. In many countries, penetration rates of more than %50 has been reached. At present, there are approximately 4.5 million GSM subscribers in Saudi Arabia and STC has commissioned Ericsson and Nokia to expand its GSM network to 5.5 million lines (~ %20 penetration rate). This wide use of mobile technology have often raise the question about if there are health implications for human. In fact, there are conflicting reports relating to possible health effects from mobile phones and base stations. In April 2000, an independent expert group in UK has issued a report on Mobile phone effects on health based...

...Cell Phones And Their Health Risk Essay The world we live in today seems certain to teach us one thing and if we are to learn from its lesson, it seems it\'s telling us that nothing is certain. In large this might be true today and perhaps witnessed in almost all mediums. Feelings of some grand helplessness and the anxiety that follows reduce all complicated issues to necessary chaos. We are still capable of taking the rudder of our own lives and making the educated, hard decisions. Wire Wars The war over the health hazards of cellular phones is beginning to mount. The idea that cellular phones possibly cause cancer became an issue in 1993 when a gentleman ...I would contend that we are still in control so long as we can recognize that proverbial carrot of convenience that sometimes lead us astray. In today’s society the carrot here is the cell phone. It has become a part of our culture. It is a mere object that civilization has done with out for centuries, and would do just fine without today. For most of us however, it is a mainstay in our lives. We never stop and think Wire Wars The war over the health hazards of cellular phones is beginning to mount. The idea that cellular phones possibly cause cancer became an issue in 1993 when a gentleman sued ...of any dangers it may present. There is a lot in the news lately about economic crisis and financial shenanigans. Ultimately more important than omens of the next Great Depression, are those of the ill effects of cell...

...Ariana Galindo Mrs. Sgarioto English 1100-400 9 December 2009 The Invisible Killer What if one were to tell you that your cell phone is slowly killing you every time you use it? Cell phones are a part of everyday life for many people across the world. To many their cell phone is considered the most important item they own. People use cell phones everyday for simple tasks. One example is going to the grocery store, when a person forgets what they were supposed to get for mom they simply call her and ask. Imagine thirty years ago? People could never do something like that. Society today relies a great deal on cell phones and their features, but do not realize the potential danger they are putting their health in. Many people around the world use cell phones every day but are unaware of the fatal outcomes linked to them. To understand how potentially harmful cell phones are society must consider the many people using them. There are three billion cell phone users worldwide and more than 260 million in the United States alone (Mead 422). It is shocking that so many people around the world and U.S are cell phone users and they all may not know how harmful cell phones can be. It is important to discover how this technology of cell phones was created and developed in order to look into how it is affecting humans. In 1974, in response to growing demand for a communication system that was more convenient than two- way radios, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) allocated...

...Do Cell Phones Cause Brain Cancer? The Diehards Cling Desperately To Opinion In some quarters the specter of cancer-causing cell phones refuses to be put to rest — or even to be temporarily stilled while new studies are conducted. In recent years a large number of studies from over a dozen countries have been published showing no evidence of a detectable link between cell phone use and brain tumors. This should be reassuring. Nevertheless, there are hard-core believers among activists and scientists who do not miss an opportunity to promote a contrary view. Last October Italy’s Supreme Court ruled that a business executive’s brain tumor was linked to his heavy use of a mobile phone. In support of its judgment, the court cited studies by a single group in Sweden, which stand out from the totality of studies on the question. And this past week, The Scientist carried a vehement opinion piece entitled “Scientific Peer Review in Crisis” attacking the BMJ (British Medical Journal) for publishing a large Danish study that found no association between cell phone use and cancer. The author of the piece, Dariusz Leszczynski, is a research professor at the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority in Finland. He cited flaws in the design of the study that render any conclusions meaningless and asked whether the study passed peer review due to incompetence of the reviewers and editors or due to conflicts-of-interest among the former. He went on to call for retraction of the paper...

...Introduction INFORMATION Students at High Schools in St.Louis are not allowed to use cell phones during school hours. The Disciplinary actions for students caught using a cell phone are: First Violation: The device will be confiscated and a parent/guardian must schedule a conference at the school to retrieve item. Second Violation: The device will be confiscated, student fined P1,200.00, parent/guardian must schedule a conference to retrieve the item, and (1) day suspension of student. Third (or more) Violations: The device will be confiscated, student loses privileges of possessing electronic devices for 1 year, student fined P2,400.00, more suspension days and/or referred to Student Tribunal Court. School districts across the states have similar policies because cell phones and other electronic devices are seen as an interference to the learning process. On the other hand, there are arguments that these rules are too strict and school districts should find ways to embrace the cell phone technology used by students on a daily basis. LITERATURE CAUSE AND EFFECT In today’s fast-moving and globalised world it is almost impossible to imagine our day-to-day life without mobile-phones. It is one of the most successful inventions of the 20th century, which has become a convenient means of communication. Modern mobile phones perform many other functions as well; they can substitute for such devices as music players, cameras and organizers. Most of them also...

...Are cell phones dangerous? Do you have a personal cell phone? Do you know that cell phones have evolved rapidly in the past few years and have become the world's most useful electronic? Cell phones were first tested in the late 1970s by Illinois Bell in Chicago, Illinois, and they were a great success. Cellular Radio Telephones, also known as cell phones, have low-powered and lightweight radio transceiver that provides voice telephone and other services to mobile users. Cell phones primarily operate like portable telephones. However, unlike cordless phones, cell phones are completely portable and do not require a jack to access the wire-based networks operated by local telephone companies like PNCC. In today's modern society new generation of services for cell phones have increased. Now it provides videoconferencing and Internet access with the ability to send e-mail. Cellular telephones have become very popular with professionals and consumers as a way to communicate while away from their regular, wire-based phones. Although cell phones bring some conveniences and benefits to our lives, they also have some potentially dangerous effects. Cell phones are potentially dangerous when people tend to talk on their cell phones while driving and by doing so; it creates a greater risk of getting into an accident. Sometimes when you're talking on the phone, you tend to lose your attention on the road because of your focus on the person that's talking to you. Once, for example, you...

Melatonin is a hormone made in the brain, which is a natural antioxidant(5x stronger than vitamin C, 2x stronger than vitamin E). It is produced when we sleep, because during the time we sleep, we use melatonin to repair our brain from daily activities. Melatonin is used to defend against radical cells, which have been linked to cancer. This means a lack of melatonin in the brain can cause an increased risk of brain cancer. 13. Yes, this does change my opinion on getting enough sleep. I try to make getting enough sleep a priority, but I can't convince myself to sleep early or sleep for long periods of time. This documentary has motivated me to try to sleep longer in order to both prevent cancer and make my face look healthy. 14. Yes, I'm already trying to make changes in my habits.
