CHAPTER SUMMARY – CHAPTER 1 – ETHICS IN THE WORLD OF BUSINESS

Frequently, the ethically correct course of action is clear, and people in business act accordingly. Exceptions occur when there is uncertainty about ethical obligations in particular situations or when considerations of ethics come into conflict with the practical demands of business. In deciding on an ethical course of action, we can rely to some extent on the rules of right conduct that we employ in everyday life. However, business activity also has some features that might limit the applicability of our ordinary ethical views. One distinguishing feature of business is its economic character which can be summarized as the conduct of buyers and seller and employers and employees. A second distinguishing feature of business is that it typically takes place in organizations which is a hierarchical system of functionally defined positions designed to achieve some goal or set of goals. Because business involves economic relations and transactions that take place in markets and also in organizations, it raises ethical issues for which the ethics of everyday life has not prepared us. Decisions making occurs on several distinct levels: the level of the individual, the organization, and the business system. The level of the individual represents situations that confront them in the workplace and require them to make a decision about their own well-being. The level of the organization can be identified as a decision which must be made by an individual acting on behalf of the organization bringing about some organizational change. The level of the business system can be summarized as a decision which can be made by neither an individual nor a single organization; rather, it is a decision which is agreed to industry wide. Identification of the appropriate level for a decision has been

Four Main Components for Effective Outlines Ideally, you should follow the four suggestions presented here to create an effective outline. When creating a topic outline, follow these two rules for capitalization: For firstlevel heads, present the information using all uppercase letters; and for secondary and tertiary items, use upper and lowercase letters. The examples are taken from the Sample Outline handout. Business Plan

...Consulting Case Memo -- Outline Executive Summary While this section appears first, it should actually be the last thing you write. * The executive summary should be no more than one page. * Executive summaries are not “introductions.” They do not provide background. * Everything discussed in the executive summary should be explained in greater detail in the body of the memo. * If the only thing someone reads is your executive summary, your reader should have a good understanding of the problem, your proposal, the most important cost(s), and the most important benefit(s). Problem Statement Identify the problem in business terms. State clearly why the owner, president, or CEO should care about addressing the problem you’ve identified. Proposed Solution Identify the one most important action the company or organization needs to take to address the problem. Be as specific as possible in describing your solution. Costs of the Proposal Be as inclusive as possible when thinking about costs. Consider things like opportunity costs and the impact of the proposed change on the organization’s culture in addition to the more obvious financial costs. Identify every possible objection to your proposal. Why hasn’t the company already taken this step? The quickest way to have your recommendation rejected is to hear an objection to which you must reply, “I hadn’t thought of that.” Benefits of the Proposal How will your specific proposal address the problem you’ve...

Chapter Summary

...Chapter 5 addresses the importance of police and law. In any society, governmental entities enact laws, make policies, and allocate resources. This is true at all levels even in rehabilitation counseling. Public policy can be generally defined as a system of laws, regulatory measures, courses of action, and funding priorities concerning a given topic promulgated by a governmental entity or its representatives. It is our intent to focus on the practical application of ethics in decision making. We need to start by creating some clarifying distinctions to facilitate our purpose. First, we must acknowledge the vast amount of research and study on the topic, and recognize that our application of ethics within business decision making, only addresses a small portion of the much broader topic. Second, our goal is to address decision making ethics in view of our decision making in a way that will enable a consistency application of ethics in the decision making process. Traditionally, rehabilitation counselors provide direct services to people with disabilities who need assistance with adjustment to disability, retaining their jobs or finding suitable alternative employment that is consistent with their physical capabilities. This is clearly an advocacy role in which the rehabilitation counselor seeks to assist the individual, known as the client, to achieve his or her goals. In activities leading to vocational assessment or job placement, or both, of the injured worker. A summary of...

We are fortunate to have a virtual chapter with strong leadership and university campuses to support the activities of the chapter in the fulfillment of the society’s mission and purpose at regional and local levels. I became involved in Sigma Theta Tau International twelve years ago when I was inducted into Omicron Delta, as one of the founding members and attended the chartering ceremony in Indianapolis, IN under the direction of Dr. Sandra Wise.  My involvement, as a University of Phoenix graduate, started my active involvement in the society in 1998. I have served as Secretary, President, Archivist, Scholarship committee member, and Liaison from the University of Phoenix Dean’s office.  At the local level, I was active in the state wide STTI chapter consortium, which provided research conferences to nurses within the state. Additionally, as part of my scholarship, I have served as an abstract reviewer for the Southern California Joint Sigma Theta Tau International Chapters Odyssey Planning Committee. Omicron Delta is proud to be the first chapter to be recognized...
