Beauty, Life, Death

...any reader to think about its scene and how profound this story can actually be. Many different opinions have been expressed as to what the poet was trying to convey in these lines; happiness, life, or maybe even death. The poem was written during the early 20th century, around the 1920s. According to an analysis done on this poem: “...Frost wrote the poem on a hot summer day...” (Gualdoni 2). Quite an interesting piece of information that questions why Frost would use a season opposite to the one he was currently writing through. The poem itself is written in iambic tetrameter so that 4 lines are grouped together in each stanza. There is a visible rhyme scheme and figures of speech that coexist within the piece. The first two lines in a stanza rhyme with each other while the third line stands to temporarily disrupt the balance, only to be followed by a fourth line with a rhyme that will match the previous two. A broad sense of imagery invites the reader to his/her imagination and calmly surrounds them in that cold winter night. In the woods with just his horse, the snow and a frozen lake, is a simple setting the poet used for this piece. The first few lines display a character that is in the middle of nowhere and mentions of an unknown person that the “woods” belong to. “Who woods these are I think I know. His house is in the village though; he will not see me stopping here to watch his woods fill up with snow” (Frost 1-4). Annabella Gualdoni, a reviewer of poetry, believes that...

Son of Satan

...Analysis and interpretation of Charles Bukowski’s short story “Son of Satan”. Rebellious behavior of today’s youth and vulgar vocabulary in early age can be developed by domestic violence, economic hardship and the loneliness caused by paternal indifference. The short story takes place in America and the reader gets the impression that the event takes place some sort of suburbs a day which seems like a nice hot summer day: “…and it was summer, no school, and we sat on the grass in the sun behind my father’s garage…”(1 line2) The short story starts in media res and as reader you are thrown into the middle of things without previous introduction to the characters and events. You only get a very short introduction to the three boys, the protagonist, Hass and Morgan, who are the main characters of the story and to the settings which makes it easier for the reader to paint a mental picture of the three. The short story is build chronologically and probably stretches from the middle of the day until early evening. It could take place at any time. Killings

...Killings Analysis Style and Technique “Killings,” one of Dubus’s best-known and most respected stories, was the basis for the film In the Bedroom (2001). Although the story revolves around passion and violence, Dubus tells the tale in a flat, calm way. The first two acts of violence are dropped into the story unexpectedly and without emotion. The story opens with Frank’s funeral, then moves on to the conversation between Willis and Matt about how Matt wishes he could kill the man who murdered his son, but the reader does not know who killed Frank, how, or why. Next, in a long descriptive paragraph, Richard is introduced. He is first connected to Frank by the flat opening line of the next paragraph: “One night he beat Frank.” Only then does the reader learn about Mary Ann, and Matt’s and Ruth’s differing feelings about her. In a lovely, lyrical scene, Mary Ann joins the Fowlers for a barbeque after a day at the beach. Matt’s love for his son is mixed with a wistful attraction to Mary Ann. She is beautiful, but Matt sees in her eyes a sadness and pain that he and his family have been spared, and he wishes he could help and comfort her. The next paragraph starts with, “Richard Strout shot Frank in front of the children.” Such jarring shifts of mood are used to emphasize how quickly life can turn from sunny to violent and how swiftly the good things in life can be taken away. The story’s point of view is that of the limited omniscient narrator. The reader sees the events through...

An Explication to Doris Lessings's 'Woman on the Roof"

...An Assignment Explication of Doris Lessing’s ‘WOMAN ON THE ROOF’ Contents 1) Facts about The Author, Doris Lessing 2) The Explication of the Story 3) Bibliography notes 4) Card Notes 1) Facts about the Author, Doris Lessing Doris Lessing the author of ‘Woman On Top Of The Roof’ is a British novelist and short-story writer, whose interest in psychology led her to fictional explorations of madness and self-analysis. Much of her work is concerned with the everyday and inner lives of perceptive, sensitive women. One of her famous books, The Golden Notebook became a classic of feminist literature because of its experimental style and explorations of self, creativity, and feminine identity. However ‘Woman On Top of the Roof’ a much simpler work revolves around the same issue of mild feminism and transcendence. Here a single young woman transcends inspite of aggravation from a male dominated surrounding. She does not allow them to effect her own individuality in this story. Lessing's life has been a challenge to her belief that people cannot resist the currents of their time, as she fought against the biological and cultural imperatives that fated her to sink without a murmur into marriage and motherhood. "There is a whole generation of women," she has said, speaking of her mother's era, "and it was as if their lives came to a stop when they had children. Most of them got pretty neurotic - because, I think, of the contrast between...

The Process of Beer Production

...Introduction Brewing beer is really a very simple process, a unique mix of art and science that consists of a number of key steps. Brewing begins with malted barley that is milled and mixed with hot water to form a mash. During mashing, the malt starches are converted to sugars. The sugar rich water is then strained through the bottom of the mash and is now called wort. The wort then goes to the brew kettle where it is brought to a boil. During this stage, hops are added at different times during the boil for either bitterness or aroma. The wort is then cooled and aerated, and brewers' yeast is added for fermentation. The yeast produces alcohol and carbon dioxide and other byproducts from the sweet wort. After fermentation the "green beer" undergoes maturation. The last step in the brewing process is filtration, and then carbonation. Next the beer is moved to a holding tank where it stays until it is bottled or kegged. For a more detailed description of the brewing process click "Continue." Barley Malt Barley malt is to beer as grapes are to wine. It is ideally suited to brewing for many reasons. Malted barley has a high complement of enzymes for converting its starch supply into simple sugars and contains protein, which is needed for yeast nutrition. Of course, one important element is its flavor. There are two types of barley: six-row and two-row. Discourse Analysis of a Short Story

...Lecture : Discourse Analysis SIDE BY SIDE By Peter Panepento Melissa Meely dropped in to a chair in front of her manager’s cherry veneer desk. “I don't know how people with kids can do this job,” the 25-year-old radio advertising sales rep said. Her boss, Laurie Thompson, had heard such self-doubt before. Her six sales people in Connoisseur Media in Erie, in the shores of Lake Erie in Pennsylvania, often popped into her office to vent frustrations about a tough day of cold-calling. On this Wednesday in June 2006, as the late afternoon sun cast rays of light through a wall-lenght window, it was Melissa (Missi to her friends) who led the caravan into Laurie’s office. Laurie nodded. She didn't have children, devoting herself instead to a sales career, running marathons, cycling, sailing and spending tme with Chuck, her husband of nearly 20 years. “I don't think I’ll ever have kids though that would really disappoint my parents,” Missi said. “why? Because you're an only” laurie asked. Missi said her parents would be disappointed because they wanted grandkids. Then she added, almost as afterthought, “I was adopted.” From the time she was tiny, Missi knew that she was adopted. Doug and Sandy Meely were always open with their daughter about where she came from. “you weren’t had – you we chosen,” Doug would tell her. After they got married in October 1972, Doug and Sandy learnt that they were unable to conceive. But they longed for a family. So they sought out and adoption...

...Analysis of Blanche tragic life Abstract : As one of the most important play writers of America after the World War Ⅱ, Tennessee Williams won lots of theatrical awards for his masterpiece A Streetcar Named Desire. As a result, Blanche, the heroine in the play, had been the focus point of the critics. This thesis tries to analyze profoundly the cause of the tragedy of Blanche from several aspects .As Williams T concluded, ‘The heroine Blanche was struggling between reality and fantasy, finally, her spirit was broken drastically under the beat of ruthless reality. She was the typical weak woman and victim in the patriarchal society. Her tragedy shows that the woman can’t escape the control of the typical patriarchal society in any case of resistances.’(Williams, 2).Some of William’s points will be elaborated in this paper which includes four parts. Chapter one serves as an “introduction”, which gives a general review of main characters in the novel. Chapter two, “Character of Blanche” ,Blanche’s being trapped by the conventionality; Blanche’s illusion about men; Blanche’s illusion about herself; her husband’s suicide; Stanley’s rude behavior and sense of dominance; Stella’s betrayal; Mitch’s desertion and the cold realistic world. In conclusion, it is the Blanche’s illusion about men ,herself and cruelty of Stanley that mainly causes her tragedy.
