Cheating in Business Schools and Creating a Culture of Integrity

Northcentral takes pride on the stature of giving its graduates the opportunity to earn a “U.S. Regionally accredited degree” (Mission Statement, 2012). Along with mentors, academic advisors, librarians, the writing center, deans and many other individuals; they all strive to keep students on the right path. Along that path, there could be temptation to veer from an honest path and cheat. Cheating could be getting someone else to write a paper for a class, taking a test with a group of students or using technology to outwit the program students are utilizing for class. If we are to become “valuable contributors to our communities and professions” (Mission Statement, 2012) we should take our classroom work and academics on a serious note by following the values Northcentral University set aside for students. The values of Northcentral University are made up of an acronym. “I.D.E.A.” founded through the integrity of values formulated at Northcentral have become a very serious guideline for the graduate and undergraduate MBA programs. Linda K. Trevino of Smeal College of Business stated that cheating is more prevalent in business schools than regular colleges. Some say it has to do with whom business school appeals to. Others say that is could possibly have to do with what is taught and learned throughout the journey of business school. With the problem of cheating at hand and not knowing if comes along with the student to business school or is accrued by the students after retaining knowledge at business school; many business schools have come up with a strict Academic Integrity of Ethical Conduct. The level of academic integrity that is held and needs to be abided by in business school is very serious for the students and teachers. The

...Cheating has always been looked down upon in society, but it still thrives in the classrooms of schools and universities. It doesn't seem to matter whether it is right or wrong, just as long as it gets you that A you were looking for. Cheating has grown over the past few years and the question is why? Who's to blame? I know cheating occurs in Bacon Academy. I'll even be so honest to admit that I have participated in cheating once or twice in my high school career. Even so, I know it's not okay; and there are serious punishments if you are caught: there will be a zero on the assignment, and a suspension if you plagiarize. Ouch, cheating definitely doesn't sound worth the risk. So why do we do it? Cheating is done for multiple reasons. Sometimes it's done just to help out a friend. Your neighbor asks about a question during a test and you reply with the answer just to be courteous, nothing more than that. There's no deeper reason, other than maybe one day your neighbor will be able to return the favor. Another form of cheating is the "!%#&, I forgot to study for this test, but the smartest person in the room is sitting right next to me" reason. Some people figure there's no harm because they're going to do poorly anyway. But some people cheat because they're lazy or just don't care. It was believed that the cause of this behavior was a result of cheating while the individuals were enrolled in a University. The College of Business at Bayview University believed that the issue of cheating was much worse at their University compared to other institutions. This report was developed to help determine and study the cheating tendencies of 90 students. This test was given during and exit interview to help elevate any potential repercussions to the results.
