Religon: Christianity and Gender

...Religion has played a vital role in the formulation and understanding of gender in society. Many religions which we are conscious and know off are primarily male oriented and male driven. This essay will discuss the role and understanding of gender in Catholic Christian church. The essay will be concerned with women in these churches, and how different gender theories conform with the observations witnessed during my visit. In this essay, I look at the prevalence of male centrism during the Sunday mass in the Catholic church I visited to, using Mary Daly’s theory of patriarchy in religion and how women are being oppressed due to a male God and conclude the ways in which we know of Christianity of being a heavily patriarchal religion. Secondly in this essay I will also look at the use of language in the church and how language can be deciphered as symbolic and reflect gendered perspectives using Luce Irigaray’s theory of symbolism to conclude how the use of language reflect a gender biases and how it is one sided. When I visited the church on Sunday I was amazed to see the statues and images of Jesus in the entrance area. Once, inside the main area there is a huge crucifix in the altar where I could see the the image of Jesus. There were other statues of Jesus in the church and then there was the one statue of the Virgin Mary and the infant Jesus. Before the service began, there were male announcers who gave short speeches on the recent doings of the church and related matters...

Ethnographic Study

...Upon my arrival to the Bible Study for the ethnography assignment, I observed the church’s outer appearance and surrounding neighborhood. This particular parish was in the northeast quadrant of Burlington, North Carolina. Located in a predominately African-American community, the church gave off the vibe of being a relatively active place as multiple cars drove in, through, and around the parking lot. While preparing myself to exit the vehicle, I watched many older persons, ranging from fifty-seventy, head to what seemed like an administrative building for the church. Upon surveying the outer structure up close, I could see that the established date was 1868 and the built date for the current facility read 1963. In order to gain a better understanding of the youth population of the congregation, I chose to observe the student Bible Study that was separate from the adult class. The youth Bible study was held on the second floor of the main church building that contained the sanctuary, a pastor’s study, a secretary’s office, a Sunday School office, choir room, and seven classrooms. My surveillance of the church’s interior prior to going up to the second floor for the class, gave the impression that their had been recent renovations within the past year or two. During my examination, one of the self-identified minister’s on staff at the church introduced himself and invited me to the classroom for the young people’s Bible study. His direction and guidance was actually beneficial...

During this stage, children go through growth spurts which include changes in height, weight, and increases strength and stamina. Many theorists developed many theoretical interpretations that will tie in the whole developmental status for middle childhood stage whether it is physical, biological, socio-emotional, or cognitive development. Sigmund Freud is one of the well-known theorist that identified the middle childhood as the “Latency stage” because the physical growth of a child at this stage is slow and at a steady pace. Observation

...Observation Number Two The purpose of this observation is to observer an adolescent of either sex between the ages of 12-18. I have chosen to observer an adolescent male age 18. This was a little difficult to do because adolescents are guarded with regards to adults, it just happened that this was made easier when the adolescent knew me from church and the choir. I will begin with Jacob who is 18. Jacob grew up with his parents in forest hills, PA, also with Aunts and uncles and his maternal and paternal grandparents still living. When you look beyond the surface of the family life of Jacob you will see a different person when Jacob is at home compared to when he is at church or school. At both of these places Jacob is allowed to be more of an adolescent then when he is at home. With certain requirements of his mother and father to help take care of his younger siblings while both parents work two job and also work later than most parents. Jacob is a Caucasian adolescent with brown hair, hazel eyes, he is very slender at 5’ 11”. Upon meeting Jacob most would assume he belongs to the stereotypical role of swimmer or diver. He is a very vibrant, enthusiastic aer about him. Jacobs mother graduate from graduate school with a masters in clinical psychology, his father also graduate from graduate school with his masters in social work. Jacobs mother is retired and receiving a retirement income. His father works at a community health company in Monroeville, pa. Both...

Black Liberation Theology: so You Think Jesus Was White?

...culture and spirituality of Blacks by non Blacks. And for Blacks I hope to affirm that our culture and spirituality is a depiction of our past, present, and future relationship with God. “Black Liberation Theology and Black Theology” are terms that walk hand in hand. For both share it’s African and slave roots since the 1560s. Long before the landing of The Mayflower at Plymouth Rock in 1620. There are a lot of differences between the two. Black Liberation Theology is more “vocal” in proclaiming liberation from oppression. Often it presents itself as hatred. An example of this is the speech of Rev. Jeremiah Wright on March 13, 2008. Black Theology, from a Black Catholic perspective, works in the line of tradition within the Catholic Community. Such hatred is...

Catholic Faith Traditions

...Once upon a time, there was a little girl raised in a big, happy, Catholic family. She attended Catholic school and mass, and believed in God with all her heart. Eventually, the little girl grew up and decided to have a family of her own, except now, her new family was Lutheran. She made the decision to convert to Lutheranism from Catholicism. This little girl was my mother. Given my familial background, I decided to compare the Lutheran and Catholic faith traditions in closer context. Based on my observations, the Lutheran and Catholic churches are comparable, but they also have many distinctions. The two churches that I chose to observe King of Kings Lutheran Church (LCMS), located in Kansas City, Missouri, and St. John’s Catholic Church,...

Worship Manual

...WORSHIP MANUAL by David C. Stone Third edition (May 1998) Revised (October 1998) © 1998 David C. Stone. All rights reserved. This document is very much a continuing effort. It is an attempt to express a theology and philosophy of corporate worship that is becoming increasingly prevalent in churches across both denominational and international borders. This third edition contains greatly expanded content in chapter 1 (The Meaning of Worship) and some additional material in chapter 2 (Corporate Worship). This includes corrections, additional references and a short Bible survey that fills in some of the background material to the text. The first revision finally includes the material on the Tabernacle (section 2.5) and the beginnings of a study on the history of worship (chapter 3, incomplete), as well as some minor section renumbering. I still fully intend to add a chapter on leading worship, but I got a little sidetracked! M Vitual Child

...1. Based on the evidence from age 6 and 8 years, how well is your child adapting to the school social environment and to the peer group? To what extent does this adaptation seem to depend on personality characteristics that are fairly stable in your child, and to what extent does your child seem to be developing novel behavior to cope with these new situations? Refer to the textbook for particular points about the responses of children in this age group to the peer group and the school environment. (2 points) Many changes occur between the ages of 6-8 years old. Children are leaving the comfort of their preschool environment and entering the school environment. This new environment exposes children to multiple new experiences. How a child responds to these changes can impact how successful they are in the school environment. One of the bigger changes is the amount of other children in the classroom. Typically pre-school classes are smaller in number and children become comfortable playing with only a small social group. Kindergarten and first grade could potentially have 30 children and can cause a child to feel shy and unable to cope with the new social situation. Another factor that influences a child’s ability to adapt to the school environment is the teacher controlled environment and then the more child controlled environment on the playground. Most children are used to being monitored closely throughout the whole day. However, the playground environment and the independence...

Cultural Marriages

...Cultural Marriages Cultural Marriages Kenny Lyday March 9th, 2013 EG351 Week 11 Project part 2 Dr. Dunn 11162824 The institution of marriage carries various social implications that determine quality of life depending upon the social construct of the couple. Learning to form bonds with others begins at a very young age, and in so doing, forms many of the decisions that adults have in weddings and ceremonies. Along with the bond, mate selection, cultural similarities and social attitudes help construct the institution of marriage. Ideas into the process of marriage and types of ceremonies shape the establishment of the joining of individuals. Being with the right person, determining if family and friends would be accepting of the choice made, and cultural similarities that can affect child rearing are a few questions that can be generated when the union of two individuals join together to solidify their bond into matrimony. In essence, typical marriages deal with the course of two individuals who gain emotional ties that become strong enough to believe that to complete the final choice in true commitment is to undergo the process of making an outward proclamation of togetherness. Many view this sort of ceremony to be sacred, and in fact, include various religious infusions that in many cases are culturally influenced. Primary decisions that influence marriage do not always include the idea of love, or even emotional bonds. The idea of being loneliness, feeling...
