"McCandless was thrilled to be on his way north, and he was relieved as well—relieved that he had again evaded the impending threat of human intimacy, of friendship, and all the messy emotional baggage that comes with it. He had fled the claustrophobic confines of his family. He’d successfully kept Jan Burres and Wayne Westerberg at arm’s length, flitting out of their lives before anything was expected of him. Some people respect McCandless’ daring and idealism; others say that he was shortsighted and reckless to travel to Alaska without the proper preparations. Christopher’s death was a tragic one but the most tragic part in my opinions was his opposition to human intimacy and the rift that he caused between him and his family. He was misunderstood by his parents and others who didn’t see his point of view so the point that he sought personal asylum in the wilderness, away from humanity. But even on his hermitical journey he connected with a lot of people and changed their lives and touched his own. His final journey to Alaska probably made him realize his
