The histories of the state and federal prison systems are alike but there are many differences in which make both systems very unique. The federal system usually has people incarcerated for extended periods of time and many people refer to the federal system to be associated with white collar criminals and state prisoners as blue collar criminals.
From tons of books filled with knowledge of the original history of the federal prison system allows us to understand more on how and when all this originated. The history of the federal system started back in the 1890s but it was not until 1930 when president Hoover signed a bill establishing a federal prison system that would actually start the building of actual federal facilities. During this time the federal system was relying on the state and local levels of government to house their prisoners. The increase of the federal system was persistent since there was a rise in the United States government. Within the federal prison system there are some security levels which classify prisoners and institutions as minimum, low, medium, high and administrative.
There are so many types of state jails that contain different types of security levels. “The state prison levels include level one minimum security, level two medium security, level three high security and a recently added in the last decade level four super maximum security. One type of institution is referred to as an open security facility in which has minimal staff.” (Burk Foster, 2006). They have introduced institutions that are for offenders that have been released but still need some extra help with all sorts of programs they call this a half way house.
