In-Class Writing 4 The speaking style of Col. Stonehill appears to be quite different than Rooster Cogburn in this section. Stonehill is more of an educated speaker where as Cogburn is very sarcastic. As we read throughout this section we gain insights on each character’s personality by their manner of how they express themselves. Stonehill is sympathetic but also very stern and hard to budge. Cogburn thinks very high of himself and acts like he is never in the wrong. Cogburn is also very violent with others and is determined to get his way. One example that shows Stonehill is an educated speaker is when he says, “I shall pray that you return safely, your efforts crowned with success.
