Socrates declared that to understand the mysteries of the universe, one must know himself, and there’s no better tutor than life itself. It’s true that life teaches us in mysterious ways, and often what we expect is not what we get. But what stays with us is the experience obtained during the process. We can learn from it and strive for a better future, or we can blame others for being the reason of our failure and drown ourselves in the pool of sorrow. There have been many experiences in my life that have shaped me into the character that I am now, especially this experience. It all began last school year when I joined Model United Nations. I thought it would be a great society to join to learn more about international issues, ideal for someone like me, an International Baccalaureate Candidate, who aims to bring changes to mankind. Sadly, I realized many of the members were not active. Clearly demonstrated through the small number of delegates that partook in last year’s major conference. Although I had good intentions and confidence in myself, the road to become the Secretary General wasn’t easy. A fellow classmate desperately wanted this position as well, and would do anything to achieve her goal. I had many supporters that knew I am a good leader and would bring positive changes to MUN. Everyone felt empathetic towards me after I presented my speech, but at times, good intentions are just not enough. Although my classmate put no effort or hard work during the pre-election period, she grabbed everyone’s attention when she concluded her speech “I would buy food for everyone every single meeting.” While I contemplated, many members rose out of their ghostly presence loving her offer. I was devastated to see this unexpected outcome. When results came in, she had won by a mere two
