Is it immediately after graduating high school or later in life? Having a degree can impact your income and career path in a positive way. Both can be beneficial and challenging to a person. The choice is solely based upon the student’s determination and dedication to succeed at receiving their degree. Nowadays, colleges are made up of students of all ages and back grounds that have chosen the right time to obtain their college degree. When you continue your education following high school you are more likely to follow the traits that you had in regards to studying and homework. As a student who attends school later in life it may not have that discipline and find it hard to stay focused and the information that you may have obtained earlier in life may be forgotten. The amount of information you are taught can be harder to retain when you take the time off opposed to an individual who has continued their education with no time off. Also when you are a younger learner you have less responsibilities and more support emotionally and financially from your loved ones....

...Free College Education: Right vs Privilege In one of his speeches, Leonard L. Boswell, a former U.S. Representative for Iowa's 3rd congressional district, quotes “The American Dream is one of success, home ownership, college education for one's children, and have a secure job to provide these and other goals” (Ersoy). Over the years, college tuition fees have increased immensely. Statistics show that the average in-state tuition fees at public four-year schools increased from $8,646 in 2012-13 to $8,893 in 2013-2014. In 2013-14, the percentage increase in tuition fee prices for out-of-state students was 3.1% which was slightly higher than that for state residents at public four-year institutions. ...The Right Nudge “I have hated words and I have loved them, and I hope I have made them right.” – Markus Zusak. Words are my greatest friends and enemies. They cause my emotions to spur up and spill over more than people or pictures have ever been able to do. They make me cry out in anger or grief or make me laugh so much, my stomach and cheeks hurt, but in the best way possible. They give me the strength and courage to face the next day, even when everything seems to go wrong. Words fascinate me and have done so for as long as I can remember. It began with reading novels and from that, my fascination grew into a love and curiosity for: poetry, music, short stories, foreign languages, movies and conversations. Words have affected me in every way they exist and I owe it all to one children’s book. When I was younger, I did not like to read. My father always encouraged me to do so, so of course I did not since I would not get...

...first amendment rights tell us that we have free speech, along with some other freedoms, and that should mean free not limited to certain areas. The people on campus should have the right to say what they want and not fear getting in trouble for it. These people should have the same rights as if they were not on campus, but that does not seem like how it is. The schools are there to help the students and to teach them better and newer things in life. Colleges are not there to restrict your rights, they are there to help you learn and to help you get a career after you graduate. They do have free speech on most campuses, but they have designated it to certain zones. These zones are a good idea, but it is our first amendment right to have the freedom of speech and they are slowly taking that away from us on campus. The administrative forces have been trying to punish these people that are not following by their rules. These colleges are trying to limit the free speech of students in their schools. These people try to take a stand with peaceful protests, but they just end up getting...

...The electoral college is “a group of people that elect the president and the vice president of the United States (Engel Bromwich, How Does the Electoral College Work?). Each state receives a specific amount of electoral votes, this is based off of the state's population (Engel Bromwich, How Does the Electoral College Work?). The process starts with the public voting for candidates, whichever candidates wins the popular vote in that state gets the electors vote in the state capitals (Engel Bromwich, How Does the Electoral College Work?). When establishing the electoral college the founding fathers made a compromise between election of the president by a popular vote of qualified citizens and election of the president by a vote in congress (U.S. Electoral College, What is the Electoral College?). Almost all states operate on a winner-take-all system in regards to the electoral college, where all electors vote for the popularly chosen candidate (U.S. Electoral College, What is the Electoral College?). For example in 2012 Barack Obama received 330 electoral votes and Mitt Romney received 206 electoral votes (NBC News, Presidential Election Results). Since Barack Obama won both the popular and electoral votes, this allowed him to win the presidency. In total the electoral college attempts to balance the power of electing the president between the public and...

...I realize there is research that contradicts my findings. I know that there are people that support the concept that college education needs to be a privilege and not a right, and people that defend the current educational system put in place by our government. Missy Furman is one of the great supporters of the idea that college is a privilege and it needs to be a very well planned decision, and no student should ever believe they are entitled to a college education (Furman, par.2). Not all students are alike, some have impressive high school records of accomplishments, and work hard to get and stay in college, while other students choose to display immaturity and prioritize fun (Furman, par.3-4). That being said it can be a slippery slope to make college education free for all. The college degree would lose its value, students would lose motivation to do their best, and fail to appreciation the privilege of getting a degree. According to Jenean Hampton, Lt. Gov. of...

...On July 1, 1971 the right to vote at the age of 18 was ratified. 43 years later we are now here in 2014 and college students still don't feel the need they should vote. Students don't realize how important their vote would be if they voted. This generation fails to realize the impact they would have on the world if they would take the time out to cast a ballot. College students should vote because we have the right to do so, our vote matters, and we should have input in our future. College students should vote because we have the right to do so. The importance of our future lies within voting. We should use this right to our full advantage. Not using this right shows disrespect to those who fought for us to have the right to vote. Without this right, college students wouldn't be where they are today. Another reason why college students should vote is because our vote matters. Politicians focus on college student numbers when we request any concern. If a low ratio of students cast a ballot , the lower the feedback will be for that concern. Politicians also focus on college student voting statistics because we are the ones who will be living amongst the changes that will be put in place. The voting age was lowered for a reason. That reason is to give the younger generations a chance for their voice to be heard. Last, but not least college students should vote because we should have input in our future. No one wants a future someone else has planned for them. To vote is to...

As a United States citizen, we are characterized as a member of having rights and responsibilities allowed, protected and supported by the U.S. Constitution and Declaration of Independence. “We are a nation bound not by race or religion, but by the shared values of freedom, liberty, and equality”. (College for America, n.d.a). Throughout history, the United States has entertained and greeted immigrants from many countries. Immigrants have helped to form and establish the United States as we see it today. U.S. Citizens has the right to express their opinions on how the...

...proposal to eliminate the ban of selling kidneys so that college students can pay for college has sparked much debate on the ethics of human rights and morality. The question is whether or not selling body parts for money is moral. I will be discussing how Utilitarianism, Kant’s Theory, and Negative Natural Rights theory determine morality and whether each theory deems the proposal as a moral act or not. The first theory we can use in deciding if selling kidneys for tuition is ethical is Utilitarianism. Utilitarianism determines morality by saying an act is moral if it creates the greatest overall utility. This means it will require that we sacrifice our own pleasure and happiness for the greater good. The first step in determining the moral worth of the act is defining the utility. In this situation, financially poor student are selling their kidney to pay the tuition costs to go to school. The groups that are being affected are college students who cannot afford tuition and people who are in desperate need of a kidney. In the UK, “three people die every day in the UK while awaiting kidneys”. There is a clearly a high demand of kidneys. Since utilitarianism looks to produce the greatest overall utility, we need to measure the consequences to determine whether the positive consequences outweigh the negative consequences. The positive consequences are that poor students receive money for their kidneys so they can pay for college, and people who are in need of a kidney receive them...

...There are many situations that occur that you have no control over. This happened to the students at Umpqua community college when a man walked in and opened fire; leaving ten people dead and seven more severely injured (New York Times). The fact that that he was able to walk into the college and have total control is the reason why I think there were so many killed. Could this have been stopped if it was legal for students to carry weapons on campus? We should allow college students to carry weapons on campus to stop shootings before the shooter is able to slaughter everyone in the classroom. As I have researched this topic, I have come to realize that the number of college shootings has been rising steadily throughout the years. In the year 2000, there was a total of five shootings at college campuses with a combined total of four deaths and three injuries. The number of college shootings has made a...
