Rodolpho “Corky” Gonzáles was a Chicano activist who helped initiate the Chicano Movement. He wrote the infamous poem Yo Soy Joaquin which is about Chicano struggles and the quest for equal rights and a cultural identity amongst white America, which was important in Chicano literature. Gonzáles participated in the War on Poverty, specifically towards Latinos. He eventually was fired because of favoritism and a rally occurred for his termination. The rally led to an “impetus” for the Crusade for Justice, which “was based on the twin pillars of the Chicano Movement: self determination and cultural nationalism”.
