Commedia Dell Arte (comedy of actors) is an Italian form of theatre which involves the use of stock characters each with distinctive personalities, costumes and character traits for example Harlequin, Pantaloon and Perrott . It usually involved actors improvising upon a stimuli. It was increasingly popular throughout Europe in the sixteenth to the eighteenth century. Many playwrights incorporated this theatre form and the stock characters into their own plays for example, Shakespeare. There were many reasons that Shakespeare felt influenced by commedia dell arte and decided to use it as a stimuli for his work.
