These capabilities are interwoven in the complex configuration with other capabilities and competencies of the firm and are, in practice, very difficult to separate from them. Rather than assuming that firms inherently possess network capability, our aim is to discover if this actually naturally occurs in the discourse of the top management teams. In order to understand how managers perceive, process and interpret network capability, the management teams of six industrial subcontractors were guided through a five-step process of introducing, identifying, critical screening, challenging and verifying the capabilities of the firm. The paper introduces strategic capability architecture and investigates how network capability emerges within the configuration of other capabilities in these firms. We found that in customer oriented capability sets, network capabilities are central to the formation this kind of capabilities. In other types of capability sets, networking capabilities play an important role as assets in the formation of the capability sets. Management can set goals and objectives, assign responsibilities and accountabilities, and monitor business outcomes and processes, but it must also consider the context in which all of these initiatives occur. Organizational culture is difficult to define and cannot be measured in a direct manner as it is a soft social science issue rather than a standardized quantitative measure. To confound matters, subcultures often exist within organizations that may or may not be cohesive with the firm’s overall goals and values. One such subculture is workplace safety. Workplace safety is an important factor for organizations as it affects virtually all other elements of an organization, including production, quality, job satisfaction and expenses. One approach to controlling workplace safety is the concept of behavior-based safety (BBS), a process by which all levels of an organization participate in improving specific safety-related issues by addressing actions (behavior). The first in line appeared outside the building’s glass-fronted façade while it was still dark, and before long, the performance hall was packed.1 As the crowd streamed inside, one team of Starbucks employees handed out cups of hot coffee, while another wrote down shareholders’ comments about the company on stacks of white cards.2 From the early morning Seattle skyline to the crew of green-aproned workers, the annual ritual was steeped in Starbucks tradition. But for the iconic coffee company, this had been no ordinary year. Starbucks got its start as a Seattle-based coffee roaster in 1971. At this time, the larger coffee market was dominated by supermarket brands such as Folgers and Maxwell House, and per-capita coffee consumption in the U.S. was on the decline.3 During the next two decades, however, sellers of specialty, high-quality coffee beans began to attract a niche following.4 In 1987, entrepreneur Howard Schultz bought Starbucks with an eye toward introducing European-style coffee culture to the American market.
