Company Q is a small business that has concern about losing profits mostly due to the

recent closing of two grocery stores. A local food bank has asked them to donate day old

perishable goods, however, management declines. Company Q is openly demonstrating to the

community that they are socially irresponsible which could in turn result in losing local business.

There is not an ethical reason to be against assisting the food bank since this is day old product

that they are not likely to sell. The food store can still save their reputation, customers and

...Evaluation In evaluating Company Q for social responsibility, I have found that the company has not made a commitment to being completely socially responsible. The definition of Corporate Social Responsibility according to Lord Holme and Richard Watts (2000), “is the continuing commitment by business to behave ethically and contribute to economic development while improving the quality of life of the workforce and their families as well as of the local community and society at large”. The company has made some attempts at social responsible behavior by listening to a portion of their customers supplying them with health-conscience and organic products; however, this concession came after years of request from their customers and the stores only offer a very limited quantity of those types of foods. Company Q has ignored other opportunities to better the general community where the company conducts its business. Company Q has closed two stores in higher-crime-rate areas because of loss of profits. Company Q failed to recognize that this poorly impacts the community and the employees in that area and reflects poorly on its overall corporate image. Also, Company Q opted to throw away day old food instead of giving it to the community food bank believing it may promote fraud or stealing within their own employees. Both of these decisions were not based on a proper socially responsible attitude. This type of behavior was well hidden several years ago before the world was as...

...Business) Tuesday, July 21, 2015 Company Q is a small grocery store that faces multiple roadblocks that a bigger national chain does not normally face. These roadblocks may include things like brand recognition, disposable income, sales on their stock, advertising and the capability to help other stores that maybe facing poor sales. Being a smaller company they may operate with a different code of ethics and have different areas of emphasis. A large chain store may have the capability to absorb losses that resulted from theft, etc. but a smaller chain store may not be capable of doing so. Company Q has had to close down a couple of stores due to these stores not being able make a profit. With this closure they have had to redirect there priorities. At the end of the day it is about money and Company Q is not a non-profit organization so they have to be primarily accountable to their financial statements to survive. With the food bank asking if Company Q would donate some day old organic foods, Company Q had to make a choice. The socially responsible choice would be to donate food to help out the people within the neighborhood, however Company Q has legit concerns in regards to the possibility of employees stealing the donated food and taking it home instead of donating it to the local food bank. Company Q made the choice to dispose of the food instead of dealing with the possibility of theft from their employees. I think Company Q did not to initiate the time and resources...

...that with this outlook on social responsibility is missing a significant opportunity to improve public perception and drive profits. This is clearly the view of company Q. When twice presented with the opportunity to create both social and monetary capital, they failed miserably. This likely contributed to the closure of 2 stores due to low performance. Not only are they harming their stakeholders (the communities in which they operate) but, they are also harming their shareholders by not capitalizing on revenue opportunities. There are three clear answers to their deficiencies. The first and most obvious is to begin donating the items that are expired to the local food bank as requested. The second is to implement a code of ethics in the corporate guidelines. Lastly, they should be expanding the current selections of healthy and organic foods. If these steps are followed, can the Company Q dig itself out of the loss column and see some profits? The answer is yes. Company Q was recently approached by the local food bank, and asked to donate the day old foods that Company Q had been throwing away. Management declined, opting instead to to continue to write the food off as a loss and throw it into the trash. The reason that was cited was concern for fraud and employee theft. This is an example of the company taking the short term bottom line approach. They have completely ignored an opportunity for positive public relations and social capital. Both of which have been...

...culture of requesting donations of day-old products approached Company Q. The grocery retailer refused the request citing concerns their employees might steal valuable food and say the opposite effect. On the other hand, actions that include donations of food to local charities and display social responsibility will increase foot traffic and revenue. Important to remember is that Company Q has a responsibility to its stakeholders to conduct business in an ethical manner and wasting food is not ethical. Employees want to work for a company that takes care of them and appreciates them. B. Three actions that company Q could take to improve the company’s attitude toward social responsibility. 1) First, Company Q should establish a company wide social responsibility program to promote a sense of obligation to the company mission statement. Company Q’s charitable efforts in the community, will encourage each employee to make Company Q a success. In this way, Company Q’s stakeholders will gain a sense of pride in their investment and place of employment. In addition, all stakeholders should be made aware of all 2) promote organizational ethics and values. Included in this effort should be an adherence to a code of conduct by all direct stakeholders. An emphasis on company values and ethics will cause honesty, integrity and fairness to be the only acceptable Company Q standard. 3) Finally, Company Q should re-open the two stores management closed and advertise...

Evaluation According to the International Organization for Standardization, “Business and organizations do not operate in a vacuum. Their relationship to the society and environment in which they operate is a critical factor in their ability to continue to operate effectively.” (Online Browsing Platform (OBP), 2014) Closing stores in a higher crime rate areas is only counter-productive for the company and the community it serves.
