The options for investment, Banks, Post office schemes, Company fixed deposits are essentially for the risk-averse, people who think of safety and then quantum of return, in that order. For the brave, it is dabbling in the stock market. Stock markets provide an option to invest in a high risk, high return game.

While the potential return is much more than 10-11 percent any of the options for investment, Banks, Post office schemes, Company fixed deposits can generally generate, the risk is undoubtedly of the highest order. But then, the general principle of encountering greater risks and uncertainty when one seeks higher returns holds true.

However, as enticing as it might appear, people generally are clueless as to how the stock market functions and in the process can endanger the hard-earned money. SEBI has, from time to time, put in place various risk containment measures To address the risks involved in the cash and derivatives market. These Measures have successfully and efficaciously addressed the market risks.

INDUSTRY PROFILE
(3.1)Introduction to brokerage industry:-
The Indian brokerage industry consists of companies that primarily act as an agent for buying & selling of securities (i.e. stocks, shares & similar financial instruments) on a commission or transaction basis.
Security market has two main independent segments: * Primary market:- when trading of securities is taken place first time means when a firm issue new securities for generating fund it is called primary market. * Secondary market:-when the existing securities are being traded again & again in the market so that market is known as secondary market.

(3.2)Evolution of Indian brokerage market:-
The Indian broking industry is one of the oldest trading industries that had been around even before the establishment of the Bombay stock exchange (BSE) IN 1875.The equity brokerage industry in India is one of the oldest in Asia Region.

The roots of a stock market in Indian began in the 1860s during the American civil war that lead to a sudden surge in the demand for cotton from india resulting in setting up of a number of joint stock companies that issued securities to raise fund.

(3.3) Basics of stock market:-

* What is a Stock?

When people refer to “stocks” or the “stock market,” they usually mean common shares. A common share is a financial security that gives the holder an ownership claim in a company.
It gives the holder the right to receive dividend distributions and a vote at the company’s annual meeting. The shareholders vote to elect the directors of a company who in turn appoint the company’s management and set the dividend policy.

The shareholders have specific rights under both corporate law and the company’s bylaws. Shares that are “publicly listed” on stock exchanges mean the company is required to provide information or “disclosure” to their shareholders in return for being publicly traded. Common shares are also referred to as “equity securities” or “equities” alluding to the accounting term “Owner’s Equity.” Investors and commentators use the terms “equity market” or “equities” when they refer to stocks or the stock market.
Equity investments are securities that represent ownership in businesses. This ownership is purchased in the form of shares.

* What are Derivatives?

The key to answering the question what are Derivatives? is understanding the concept of a premium. Some derivatives are compared to insurance.

Just as you pay an insurance company a premium in order to obtain some protection against a specific event, there are derivative products that have a payoff contingent upon the occurrence of some event for which you must pay a premium in advance.

Calls and Puts:- One property of calls and puts is that they can be converted one into the other, using a property known as put-call parity. Imagine that you have a call on IBM stock, giving you the right to purchase 100 shares at a price of $200 for expiry in three month’s time. If IBM stock were to trade up to $200 at any time before the option expired, let’s say that you sold the full 100 shares of the stock at $200.
You now effectively have a put on IBM stock with a strike price of $200. The combined portfolio of the call option and the short position have the same payoff profile at expiry and the same intermediate behavioural characteristics as a portfolio consisting of a put on 100 shares of IBM with a strike price of $200 for the same expiry date. If IBM’s stock at expiry is above $200, you exercise the call option, buy the stock at $200.

* Commodities: - Commodities are physical assets such as precious metals, base metals, energy stores, and food. There are two kinds of agents participating in the commodity markets: end-users (hedgers) and investors (speculators).

* What is a Mutual Fund?

Mutual fund is a vehicle that enables a number of investors to pool their money and have it jointly managed by a professional money manager.
The fund is divided into units and each holder is entitled to a proportionate share of the fund. Each “unit holder” has the right to their share of the assets of the fund and any income that the fund earns. Under tax law, the fund must distribute all of its income each year to avoid taxation. These “distributions” of realized capital gains, interest and dividend incomes are made as frequently as monthly.

But some brokers charged for it and some provide it only at once in a day. Already, BSE has shown its proactive response by increasingly using leading edge to technologies to effectively compete in the global environment. In the not too distant future, once full capital account convertibility is permitted in India, one could well witness an expansion of trading volumes and its resultant economic With the increasing Globalization, the Stock Exchange’s have tremendously affected the financial conditions of India. The stock markets of the future will have a redefined purpose and reinvented architecture due to the advent and widespread use of technology. This new market will bring benefits to investors, the listed companies, and the economies of the company. Trading will become cheaper, faster and settlement will be simpler with reduced risk. Raising capital for companies will become easier, thereby contributing directly to the Economic Growth.Inspite of all these positive predictions, the future of Stock Exchanges is likely to be uncertain and even their survival is a major question mark.
SSJ has such STRENGTHS that clients give their money without any questions about where they suggest.SSJ finance has four different schemes for AMC Demate charges which is Rs.250, Rs.1250, Rs. 600, and Rs. 4500. While Angel Broking has a scheme of Rs.1250, and Rs.3000.

Then Share khan has only one scheme is available for Demat AMC charges which are 400 and Swastika invest mart has Two Scheme 599 and 2000. In which 2000 is refundable at the time of closing Demat Account. From these we can conclude that Share khan has lower AMC charges compare to other broking firm.

The selling and buying of security through company is for SSJ finance Rs.25 and Rs.10 per scrip based on AMC scheme. In Angel Broking it is Rs.11 per scrip. While Swastika investmart gives highest exposure in intraday and delivery among four companies which is 20 times in intraday and 10 times in delivery.

Demat

...has also led to efficient and low-cost transactions related to securities. This can be seen in the Indian financial sector reforms also, which started in the early 1990s. Dematerialization of financial securities is the first sign of financial reforms in India. Finance Ministry and SEBI realized the need of more efficient financial system. As a result of this NSDL and CDSL came into picture. It aims at ensuring the safety and soundness of Indian marketplaces by developing settlement solutions that increase efficiency, minimize risk and reduce costs. Our project on “Demat System in India” gave us a detailed picture of how securities are transferred electronically in the share market. In our project we had done a comparative study of the various Depository Participants in Ahmedabad on the basis of their services and charges. This study helped us in finding out what additional services other DPs provide and how the charges differ. Another aspect of our project was to get a feedback from the clients regarding the Demat services provided at Anagram Securities Ltd. By meeting the various clients we were able to find out the scope of improvement in the services provided at Anagram. It becomes increasingly important for students of management to understand the developments in the financial infrastructure that facilitates the whole financial system. We were fortunate enough to get an opportunity to do our summer training in such an area as it...

Ipo Pricing

...Said Business School, Oxford University and CEPR Howard Jones Said Business School, Oxford University Abstract Despite the central importance of investors to all IPO theories, relatively little is known about their role in practice. In this paper we survey institutional investors about how they assess IPOs, what information they provide to the investment banking syndicate, and the factors they believe influence allocations. Although the theoretical IPO literature has tended to focus on information revelation, the survey raises doubts as to the extent of incremental information production and whether bookrunners are, in practice, able to infer investors’ valuations from their bids. We find that investor characteristics, in particular broking relationships with the bookrunner, are perceived to be the most important factors influencing allocations, which supports the view that IPO allocations are part of implicit quid pro quo deals with investment banks.
