How does one live their life, when their life has already been decided by loved ones? Maria Luna and Gabriel Marez are the parents of the leading protagonist Antonio. They both have very distinct and different backgrounds which in turn, shape their way of life and what they believe in. Their set of individual ideals conflicts those around them and even each other. This creates an enormous amount of pressure on those being affected and nowhere to direct this pressure to. This conflict resurfaces quite often throughout the book which creates a scenario in which there is no other outcome. The uncle appears to be ill because of a spell witches casted on him and in order to cure him, Ultima passes the spell onto Tony which then disappears because the spell is not meant for him. When his uncle is alive with health he then questions why the priest, a man of God, isn’t able to cure the uncle but Ultima could. Does this mean that Ultima had more power than a priest? Marias desires for him to become a priest for the Luna family but, how can he become something that is supposed to help others when the priest now couldn’t help his uncle? Then after Tony graduates from church school, at this time he was told that he’d be able to hear the voice of God but, he heard nothing. He didn’t get any of the answers he wanted, instead he raised more questions. He then asks himself how he is supposed to be a priest , which is supposed to communicate God’s word with the people, when he can’t hear God? Then Tony is exposed to the Golden Carp. This special carp is portrayed as a god who forgave the people for committing a major sin which was to fish the carp in the river and in turn, he was transformed into a Carp. Tony saw this carp in person which blew his mind because of the fact that he couldn’t hear or see his God. Then his faith starts to waver and a priest can’t have a wavering sense of faith because he is supposed to lead the people onto Gods path. With what his mother wants him to be and with what he is exposed to he is becomes
